Lets do this in reverse, it is the only way this story can have a happy ending.

There is some kind of vendetta against me being written by the Capitol. They have assigned me a Peacekeeper named Rutter and a psychiatrist named Reiss to observe me. The latter is the one who keeps writing up different prescription medicines for me. I must oblige to take them, there is a list of punishments if I don’t. I deserve it though, driving away an old escort and supposedly threatening their life. Spending so much time with someone so unempathetic finally made me crack. Star never cared. Now my sentence is a whole set of rules.

- Forced administration of intravenous medicines.
- Harm or termination of patient’s family/friends.
- Harm or termination of patient.

The last one doesn’t scare me.

The ninety fucking third hunger games. My life already took a turn for the worst before these games though for just a few short steps, someone was holding my hand and taking me somewhere else. But our grip was not strong enough, the Capitol marked his name down on their list and then he was gone. Johnny Scaletta is truly the first one and I had to watch him die on a projector while locked up in my Capitol apartment bedroom. God, I can’t stop thinking about him. Those short fragile times we spent together, up until the moment I had to let go of him. I can still feel his fingers wrapped around mine. His face. His hair. His eyes. That strong cockiness. That first time we met in my grandpa’s factory when he was so daring to ask me out after just one encounter. He is the only thing I can ever thank my grandpa for. A shame they are both dead.

Grandpa Garner, or Declan to everyone else. Fuck man, there is still so much I am piecing together about him. He really caused a ripple in the family and even the District because of his dodgy experiments on a drug that was supposedly meant to make a super human. The Capitol didn’t like it, they shot him, shot his lab staff and reaped the poor boy that was caught up in it all. There was once a time when I used to admire that man, despite my mom’s despicable insults she used to drop about him behind his back.

My mom and dad. They probably don’t think it, but my sisters and I know there is nothing left between them. I can see the only reason they are still ‘together’ is ’because of the kids’. It would be good for us if they just split, the tension is so loud, and mom is never around anyway. She is definitely having an affair and it is only fair on my dad to get away from her. Mom has always seemed to be textbook parent, never the motherly caring one. While dad, he has just always gone above and beyond. Despite everything. He is always there.

The ninety-second hunger games, the one that followed the aftermath of the rose plague. The one where we were so close to bringing one home. I will never forget Izzy.

Fenwick’s Hospital, the first place where I put on the blue scrubs and became a surgical student. A dream that was somewhat written by my parents, but I wasn’t going to follow their field. Trauma and emergency surgery, seems fitting for the boy that has witnessed so much trauma. It doesn’t matter how long the shift, being in that hospital is the only time I feel like any normal citizen. I am free to be the doctor that I dreamed of being since I was so little. I am just another Dr Garner there, not a victor.

A whole plague, and District Six had to be the epicenter. I had no time to celebrate the rosettes I collected from the science fair. It hit one night during the event, the one time that Dorothy my sister went missing. I caught the disease, but I survived, unlike so many. If I wasn’t a victor, my cousin Ollie would have had to incinerate my body. It seemed unfair that I got the special privilege treatment while even someone like Patricia Valfierno fell victim to it.

The ninety fucking first hunger games. They pulled my cousin Quinn’s name from the bowl. No matter how many sponsorship events I attended, they weren’t enough the save her. She wasn’t the first I lost though, and I am sure she won’t be last.

Aurora Emerson, a short-lived friendship that helped grow and distract me after my victory tour. There was something so special about her, despite our first detention spent together. She thought she was invincible, so she volunteered for the eighty fucking ninth hunger games. She wasn’t. I watched her die in the bloodbath. That was the first time I had a breakdown in front of Star, no sympathy from them of course. That is why the glass of wine ruined their dress.

Robin was the first mentee that I grew so attached too. I calculated the perfect strategy for him, but the eighty-eighth hunger games taught me no matter what I do, I am no help to them once they are in the arena. One blessing came from those games though, I handed the crown to Avriel and he has been a good friend since. The first victor I took to Dale’s Diner, the start of a trend…

I can mull over the eighty-seventh. My games. They are not really my games, there were twenty-three others involved and I will damn well make sure none of them will be forgotten. Especially Nanette, Langley and Revan, my allies. The ones I owe my life too. And Lorraine, Castor and Lenox. Victims to my bullets. The ones who haunt my nightmares. They keep telling me I won those games, but I am just the sole survivor. Forced to live with the regret of actually choosing to step into the arena.

I volunteer. What a fucking dumb thing to say. All because George threatened me with a baseball bat. I should have just faced my punishment, but I guess karma had other plans. A decade long punishment that will probably play out for a decade more. All because the silly little thirteen-year-old me dared Tommy to climb that fragile roof. I didn’t know. I wasn’t thinking. I never think. I have not learnt my lesson. George deserved to react like he did, my actions killed his brother. I killed our friend. I am surprised after all these years that the club still like me.

Dares Club, they have been by my side since I was just seven. Dale even longer. Me, Dale, Jodie, Tommy, Tarquin and Luca. Just a bunch of delinquents that used to get up to no good after school. We had so much fun, and I just want to go back to that time. Back to the time where my family all got along. Back to the time where nobody knew my name. I’d go back and tell the big-headed boy that yearned for popularity to seek something else.

”The only way to gain popularity around here is by being an orphan or generally just having a tragic life altogether.” It is all the truth, someone I sat next to in school is cousins with that tribute who lived and his mother died of a waterborne disease, everybody loves him. My mother performs colorectal research, and my father specializes in gastroenterology; I am the butt boy. Not the boy whose brother tragically died in the games or the boy who survived infancy in an orphanage.

”That is not true Flynn, everybody knows you.”

”Do you know how many fart words I have been called? I’m the turd boy, my parents are alive. I think all my family have died of natural causes. The boring Garner family tree.”

There is too much talk about games. I can never find a group of conversations at break time that isn’t invested in ranking the best tributes of the seventy fifth games. Even medical studies are such a bore, If I am going to be forced in any field of study it is not going to be lower abdominal. Life is less of an adventure now that I am thirteen. The burden of adolescence was dumped on me at twelve, I wasn’t prepared for it, and I am probably still not now.

Honestly just one little tragedy in my life to cause a ripple, it could be a flood in the kitchen. Or great-grandpa’s clock finally stopping, he is going to live forever that one. Anything to rid me of my reputation. Come on Ripred, a near-death experience, just something to get the gossip of Flynn Garner circulating.
