I'll tell you now I don't believe, in any faith or creed
But I know there have been times, someone was watching over me
A close call on the road, makes you think about the days
They will come and they will go, it's like I'm walking on a blade
Westimer Jay
'Wess'
In a family of eleven it can be tough to establish yourself and know that your parents recognize you as an individual, but for Westimer it isn't so bad. First off he's the oldest, being ten months older than the next oldest sibling, and second he's the one that keeps the family running. He is as close to organization as this family is going to get, but luckily he's pretty close. Twenty-four year old Wess runs the show in the District nine family of Jays. And the strangest revelation flashed before my eyes
Now I'm lighter than the wind, lighter than a butterfly
It's ironic, his name, in a way as in some ways he has details like a jay but in others he is on the opposite side of the scale. Not to mention, the fact that his dark brown hair often looks a bit like it was nested in, being all over the place as it is. He's also much bigger than an actual jay, standing at a height of 5'10" and weighing in at 139 lbs. Admittedly, he is skinny for his height, but that comes from trying to care for the family first and himself second and from living in such a large family. He is yet another Jay sibling with blue eyes, which was odd considering that brown is a dominant colour and should have appeared more often than it did.
He isn't muscled, but he does have some meat on his bones, and he isn't anything near what you could call fat. All of his clothes fit decently well, but he constantly has to wear belts or else his pants will fall past his hips without trouble. Over all his clothes can be a bit helter skelter, often askew in some way. Half of the time he has to be reminded to do up either his pants, shirt, or jacket because he'll forget. And the rainbows will come and disappear
But where's the pot of gold
And the light in your head won't re-appear
If you don't let it show
For someone who looks so disorganized it's surprising to find that he is one of the most organized of the family. In fact, he often takes over the planning for events and has taken it as his personal duty to hand out the chores so he can plan them and make sure they are evenly given out. This doesn't mean he shirks his own chores, in truth he gives himself some of the harder chores when he can get away with it. Organization is the thing that drives him, and it takes little motivation for him to start putting things in order and scheduling the family's life. Once, a while before, he had even labeled and categorized his father's shoe-boxes.
His intelligence matches the rest of his family, but his ability to find patterns in objects surpasses them all. Sometimes he seems to have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder with the way he has to organize things in an exact way. He is very much like his mother in that sense, but he takes it even farther than she does when he sorts things. He even acts as the accountant for the family at times, and he will get Stellar to help him with the numbers when he does. As much as he feels the need to plan things he also enjoys it, taking pleasure of creating order from chaos. Order from chaos, that basically explained his whole life.
More irony toward being named after a bird, he is colourblind. While birds can see even more colours than humans, he is unable to see blue to any extent and thus he can't see yellow either. Blue simply looks green to him, and orange looks like a pale red. Still, since he was born with only two cone pigments instead of three it wasn't as if he has any notion of what blue really looks like, so it's not as though the lack of the colour is hard on him. Still, it can be difficult not being able to see what colour the sky is that day. Blue isn't a concept he understands, and for the most part it doesn't bother him, but it is unlikely that he will ever grasp it.My heart is pounding like a drum, I light a cigarrette
Helmet shaking in my hands, that was the closest yet
I always felt I had nine lives, but I don't know which one I'm on
Like a gambler with a dice, will I shoot or will I run?
The parents he was born to were somewhat older than most parents around them, but they were established well enough that they knew they could take care of one son, or perhaps two. Together they raised Wess as an only child until a couple months later that Gray realized she was pregnant once more. Stellar was born ten months after Wess, and the two of them got along well enough as babies, though Wess was a bit more adventuresome than his younger brother. His parents treated them like twins sometimes, Stellar and him, since they were only ten months apart and acted very much like one another, for all the pair would remind them otherwise. The next sibling came a year after the birth of Stellar, another boy their parents named Mocking. Wess picked up the habit of calling him Mick, and the nickname kind of stuck. Even from a young age Wess saw the conflict between Mick and Stel and internally organized the things they argued about into a list with a tally beside it. To this day he continues the practice, more out of amusement to see how high the tallies got than anything.
It was two years after Mick joined the family that little Fawn came along. Though there were so many tales of eldest brothers taking a special interest in their younger sisters' well being it wasn't true for Wess. That was not to say he didn't care about her, it was just that he wasn't going to be the adoring older brother that shielded her from every harm and doted on her like she was a princess. He didn't have time, not when he had a mess of a father and younger brother to clean up after. Another sister, except she came with a twin, Mist and Storm were born a year after Fawn, and at that point Wess was almost five. Yet again, he wasn't enraptured by his sister, in fact he reasoned her safety to the knowledge that she had a twin brother to be there for her. Right now, he was far more occupied trying to figure out why Mick was biting Stel's ear. Storm showed little promise to be like his older brothers, at least to Wess' eyes, and offered him a chance to make a whole new category in the family. It was after observing how there was this difference that Wess began to make a chart for each member of the Jay family on what their characteristics were, good bad or indifferent.
Red came a year after the twins, and almost instantly stole their parent's attention. When they figured out he was blind they tried to make life easier for him, but even as a baby Wess noticed that he didn't like as much attention as he got. Personally though, Wess didn't really mind his youngest brother even when Red didn't like him much. His littlest sister, Violet, was the last to be born into the family at a year after Red. While she captured the heart of their father in a moment, their mother was more hard-pressed to just shift her attentions from Red like that. Wess paid more attention to her than his other sisters, but even still he spent more time on organizing the house than his siblings, aside from trying to straighten out the arguments between Mick and Stel - if only to document them. Jabber isn't a sibling, not truthfully anyway. The younger boy began to live with them three years ago and had seemingly placed himself as another brother in a house that had too many boys already. Wess wasn't the most sure or fond of Jabber, but has considered him enough of a family member, being cousins supposedly, to make a chart for him as well.
Wess' dad is one of the least organized people he has ever met, and it drives him crazy in the same way it drives his mother crazy. Blue is so hopelessly messy that sometimes Wess can't even blame him for the confusion he leaves in his wake, but sometimes he can. The towering piles of shoe-boxes are a project that Wess did once, but not something he would ever repeat again on the cost of his sanity. Opposite of Papa Jay, Wess' mother is a neat freak. While Wess strives for organization and a method of sorting Gray strives for tidiness and cleanliness. For everyone - aside from possibly Blue, Mick, and Stel - it seems as if they are working toward a common goal, however they often go over each other's work and shift things around. Mostly this means Wess going behind his mother and organizing the stuff she had put away so it was all congruent with some sort of theme or other. When Wess was ten, he plucked up his courage and tried to sort his father's shoe-boxes. It was exhausting work, being that there was already a huge amount of things in that room, and took the boy forever to do. A few times Wess would wonder if he would ever get done, and once he had a stack of the shoe-boxes fall on him. After a week of trying to sort the shoe-boxes he finally finished, though the order has long decayed from the room where his father's collection was stored. One thing for certain, he was never doing that again. And the rainbows will come and disappear
But where's the pot of gold
And the light in your head won't re-appear
Unless you change the way you look at the world
