Age: Eighteen
Gender: Male
District/Area: The Capitol
Appearance:
Forty has a quiet way about him, a slightness that makes it easy to slip through cracks - between walls, into conversation. There is a gentle beigeness to his skin that never changes - he does not tan, he does not burn. His skin is perfectly neutral. Then there's his dark brown eyes that tend towards black, his hair which is actually the depth of that color, and bushy eyebrows to match. But the rest of him is subtle, gentle planes instead of shape angles. A nose that barely protrudes, lips that tend towards undefined. It is only in the last few years that hormones have given any shape at all, in the severe triangle of his jawline.Personality:
Which isn't to say that Forty is horrible deformed, but nor is he exceptionally good looking. He simply is, and he cultivates this image. When his hair grew long and wild and people commented, he cut it back, not buzzed, but just long enough to stop being noticeable. When the flamboyant clothes of his youth became bright and insulting as an adult, he opted for more toned down shades, standard patterns. Not very trendy for the Capitol, but Forty does not want to be trendy. He wants to be the person in between, the one that you can't quite remember, unless he's right under your nose, peppering you with questions.
[Claiming my Ezra Miller reservation]
It's difficult to be precocious at eighteen, and yet somehow Forty manages. Everything that comes of out his mouth is colored in the latest research, the last "ism" and theoretical trend. He's very careful about how he speaks as well, eloquent but also verbose, even when the situation is casual. It can be exhausting to talk to him, because of his far-reaching intelligence, but also because he will literally talk you into a coma.History:
Chatty Kathy, you would call him, and the real trouble is that most of it isn't fluff. Hermes has done his research, and he'll let you know the full list of details, while he's busy synthesizing everything - what he's saying, the history of the research, and particularly how you are reacting. He is a very intuitive and sensitive soul; many of the secrets he gleans are ripples, tides beneath the surface. He knows the spaces between synapses are full of potential, and if he waits long enough, everyone's got a secret to tell. And if you don't have anyone you trust, you might as well trade for some other valuable tidbit that Hermes' has got, right?
Which, as you might expect, has not endeared him to many people. He is a gossip, make no mistake about it, but he's also an excellent listener, and will make you feel strong and desired and accomplished while he tucks away information to be used later on. His open mouth has gotten him into trouble more times than he cares to remember, which is one of the myriad reasons why he signed up for the experiment. There are only so many enemies you can make in the Capitol until one of them kills you, and Forty has been walking that line for years already.
A true rarity, Forty was born and abandoned on a door step near the city center, a true Capitolite orphan. He was placed in one of the plush community homes with nary another child in sight. Foster families took him for weeks, sometimes even months at a time, but it wasn't until he was eight that he was officially adopted by the Coyotes, two stylists who had much better things to do than raise children. So they adopted an older one, made sure that he could at least use the restroom properly, and generally left him to his own devices. This arrangement suited Forty because it gave him ample time to brush up on his studies and mingle with his peers, even while demonstrating his complete lack of social skills.Codeword: Odair
He had always found people interesting but it wasn't until his mid-teens that he found his true calling: sociology. People actually got paid to study other people! Miracle of miracles! And it was then that he switched his focus from philosophy to understanding how people function in society. After graduating from school, he bounced between jobs for a few months before hearing about a job just beyond the Capitol, that was seeking a sociologists. He'd never actually had an internship, nor did he possess any sort of qualifications, but Forty offered to run errands, distribute memos, whatever it took to get some real qualitative research under his belt. Especially about something so exotic as mutts.
Leaving the Capitol proper was certainly a bonus. Forty has till not learned how to keep a leash on his thoughts and his mouth. Someday he may find himself on the wrong end of an Avox surgery, and though this thought has occurred to him, he has yet to curb his ways. He is young, ambitious, and full of high voltage energy. He sees this mutt experiment as a way to get his foot in the door, to publish something unique and controversial. Because if one thing's for sure, it's that Forty will lead a difficult life, full or jumps and starts, gossip and broken noses. And he welcomes the controversy with open arms.
