Aster Rye

District Twelve and it's poverty are infamous among the Districts. Nobody can be sure of any of the District Wealth besides One and Twelve. Top, and the miserable bottom. But it isn't all bad. Those who can work well are able to feed their families. Some people have small families and it is those families who either suffer due to a lack of working men, or they have enough money to go round at least. The Rye family are one of those that have enough money to feed their little grouping sufficiently. Though many days, food is sparse, they are not as poor as those in the Seam.

Appearance

A youthful face and short light brown hair, thick yet subtle. The back and sides of his hair is shorter than the top, which is thicker. His fringe is short which makes his face become more complimented with his blue eyes resting above a reasonably sized nose. His chin is slightly square and his jawline matches with the above face. His eyebrows are just as brown as his hair, yet a little thinner. His overall build is reasonably athletic. It is clear that he plans on working in the mines because his muscle definition is probably more effective than the average District Twelve teenager. He doesn't train, but he does practice mining at school. As he is Seventeen, he will be required to enter the mines soon enough.

He usually looks quite happy. Contrary to popular belief, those in District Twelve make the happiness in life come from the small things. It is clear than Aster is a boy who appreciates personality and definition. He wears his brown-black jacket which has emblems of mining picks on the cuffs. It looks a little dusty, but that is an understatement in comparison to the rest of the District. Overall, he looks rather clean though. Of course those in District Twelve rarely get shaves so sometimes his facial hair gets a little wild but that is common throughout. He can cut his own hair, and usually does. Mainly because his Mother would rather him do it than her, as she has her own work to do.

Personality

Usually always smiling, or having a witty comment about things, Aster is what you would call a bit of a pain - if you were a teacher. He didn't see the point in learning about words, numbers, when in the end they were just going in the mines. Nothing down there looks like four-hundred and eighty, or an iambic pentameter. He didn't care for school just like he didn't care for the Games. He feels that they are in place to curse the Districts, which he feels are entirely different to the Capitol. Of course, they are, but many non-Twelve Districts get the impression that they are better off. Maybe they are, but they are still in chains. Aster thinks that any kind of restriction on choice, besides the obvious laws, is bad. He disapproves of dictatorships and politics and would rather get things done and make the most people happy. Progression is an act of futility and defiance of authority. But happiness is the cost of progression.

He is quite smart though. Nobody leaves education in District Twelve without knowing a few things. Thanks to the community spirit that the people there have, those in the District tend to pick up tools of the trade and tips or tricks. He has gathered a lot of this, being a practical kid, and thus finds himself seeing tasks much simpler than they are, because he will likely have heard somewhere how to do it easier. Like getting out the District. Though he hasn't, and may not ever risk it, he knows that it is definitely possible because of the Peacekeeper positions near nighttime. His bedroom window overlooks the Electric fence, from a safe - non-jump-able distance.

History

Born to Lilly Rye and Zeph Rye, Aster was born with a little difficulty simply because of the lack of medical care in the District. It was a successful birth, but it injured his Mother a lot and ended up making the touch senses in her legs falter. Now, she can barely walk. Through his upbringing, it was his Father providing for the family. He cared a lot for his Mother, taking her tea and working around the District, even if not allowed, to get food for her when his Dad was in the mines for weeks. This was of course when he was around seven. Before then, his Dad had to take leave from the mines to stay at home.

Later, when he was around fourteen, Aster found himself working almost full time with school, and caring for his Mother. It was his upbringing that made him able to manage. He wasn't allowed much time for rest or play. So he made humor and entertainment along the way. This is how his tendency to be the joking kind of person came along. Soon, though, his Father was permitted to stay from the Mines as he was encountering breathing difficulties. He was able to do everything anybody else could, really, and required little to no help from others. But it was tough for Aster. He felt like he would end up caring for both of them. And he knew he couldn't do it.

When he was sixteen, a year ago from now, his Mother unfortunately passed away. And with his Dad on leave from work due to medical reasons, he had to have a minding adult come to the house frequently to check that everything was alright. This minder was called Poppy. She was a little older than Aster and she became almost like a Sister to him really quickly. She was somehow tied in with the Mayor's business in that she was the one who would ensure the District was operating well mentally. That everyone was still sane enough to carry on. Thanks to her visits, Aster was able to focus after his Mother's passing and was able to settle his aspirations on the Mines - his inevitable future.
