S O C R A T E S

Socrates stood at the edge of the small stage set into the back of Method, one of two clubs in the Neon District under his gorgeously manicured thumb. The large space had been a club for many years, back even before the dark days. It was beautiful with a bar near the front and a large floor that could be converted into tiered seating for their nightly burlesque and drag shows.

Tonight however, it had been set for one of the biggest parties of the year, that's right baby, New Year's Fucking Eve. Socrates had spent the first hour of being open near the doors, creating every celebrated guest personally. A club funded by none other than Copernicus Fenwick had standards, see.

Now he stood on stage as the lights dimmed and the music was turned low so the master of the house could offer a few words of welcome.

"Greetings loved ones and friends anew," Socrates began and raised his champagne glass high into the air, "What better way to ring in a fresh new year than with a good fucking time, am I right?" He waited a moment for the cheering to stop before giving the club goers dazzling smile.

"I'm not going to say much, other than please drink, drink some more and be fucking merry, we've got quite the show for you tonight!"

He dipped into a deep bow, arms outstretched at his side as the crowd, as always, went wild.

ooc: hiya!! Meet Socrates, club owner in the neon district and self proclaimed king of the strip. I thought it could be fun to have a mass blitz party thread!! Also if you've got a queen from last year's festivities, feel free to post a performance for on the main stage :) The club is very lgbtq+ friendly and known for it's burlesque and drag shows.

Here I am workin' New Year's Eve because I'm desperate. I'm five coffee's in and absolutely zinging, mind going a thousand miles a minute and hands even faster plugging and unplugging and testing and testing again. A girl might have two famous older siblings but I ain't seeing a dime of that until they both drop dead, so I gotta hustle!!!

Spent my last $30 on a funky pair of neon green sunglasses shaped like stars (don't tell Astrid, she'll roll her eyes at me - we can't all be nepo interns, okay!) so I've been working back-to-back gigs since the Annual Snow Ball. I kinda like these party ones, once I press go the pressure's off. Nothing like being techie for those live-cross Saturn TV gigs. They pay the bills as the 9-5 (more like... 6pm-4am) but these one-off's is where I see the real money. My sunglasses collection ain't gonna pay for itself!

Don't ask me why I own so many sunglasses if I only work nights. They hide my perpetually exhausted, eye-bag-heavy, bloodshot eyes, okay? And they get people talkin backstage. Funny how people respect you way more if you have a funky accessory over a last name like mine.

"...we've got quite the show for you tonight!"

I detach from Merc and throw her the cam, hold the drink up and try to bring up that post-I just had a full scale emotional breakdown but it was hot type glow. The one with the fake tear and the flush. You know the one.

Not gonna lie, I really don't come around Saturn City too often, but you know me I can't turn down a good party. One second I'm out dancing with my comfort gay twinks and the next thing I know I'm stranded in the Neon District and my whole ass phone is dead. This is like, such a bummer, but I smell a raging party and my FOMO is off the charts. 

It's kind of hot. "Watch it, mullet bitch!" Weirdo and her freak fireworks nearly caught my hair on fire, do you know how much product I have in here right now? Seriously, fire hazard when you see one. Anyways, I'm here to look fucking hot and have a good time and word on the street is Socrates is the guy to go to.

Socrates is a dear, dear friend and when he invited me to perform at his club on New Year's Eve I of course, had to tell him I would consider it. A girl gets so, so many offers on such a night but PLEASE! I hung up the phone and SCREAMED! A coveted spot on stage at Method on New Year's Eve? Fuck you mom, I've made it!

Nothing like a contemporary dance to remind the crowd why we're all here. My set is pure white, my dress, black flowing silk. The lighting is dim, cold and I look like a dream on stage. The party rages below while I do my slow leaps and twirls to ring in the new year and I know without a doubt that I am The Dream that will be dancing through everyone's heads tonight while they sleep this party off.

I am unforgettable.

Ever since the tournament, Banks McCooy has had no time to just exist as himself. It's always training some punk kids into being careers in Four and coming back home on the weekends. It's a new year though. A new year to celebrate all the upcoming accomplishments. A pale excuse to exist where people will not know him, but also where he won't know anyone else. Drink in hand, music bumping, and he's having the time of his life at the Method. Who's to say what happens, he certainly didn't give a shit.

The dancers perform as he resides in the booth he's at with others beside him. Hours spent clubbing before coming to the New Years Party of the year, he's already sloshed to all hell. Eyes caught on many different attractive guys and gals. His own shirt having been unbuttoned completely as the taste of tequila on his tongue already is starting to make him feel looser. There's a smile on his face as a glass is raised.

It's a new year.

A new notch to add to his bed.

"Yes, dear. Obviously I'll be attending." It was the most fashion-heavy night of the year, of course I'd be there. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I was a fashion reporter, running my own blog now, and tonight, everyone would be dressed to the nines.

When I was invited, I graciously accepted the request to be there. My daughter couldn't attend, but she wanted to know if I was going. When I told her I was, she was quite excited to be going to spend time with my sister that night, which was a relief. Typically she was a bit more reluctant when I told her she was going to be babysat by Auntie Juniper.

Arriving at the party in style and a tad bit late, my rose dress looking perfect, I received a glass of champagne almost immediately when I stepped into the room. I took a sip and felt the bubbles: glorious.

The party was going strong already, and I wandered around to mingle, talking with those who were dressed their best more than the others. I approached an individual who was adorned in a quite stylish outfit, and spoke up.

"I must say, you are looking quite darling tonight, my dear," I told them with the flash of a smile.

On the first day of ECE 180, when the prof started the lecture with an overview of Java, Endy turned to me with a venti latte in his hand and asked if this was a coffee tasting class.

I sent that to the group chat.

He gave me his number at the end of it. Then, I never saw him again until he was splashed all over Pola in a gray hoodie crying woe-is-me about being a nepo-baby. It was funny back then, I got to say I knew this lil loser, worked on the punchline to this story during every party retelling.

And then it wasn't funny anymore when he called me up months later in the middle of the night and I tried to fake a voicemail message, half-asleep, before he got to the part where he said he was paying me to hang out with him.

I think he has no friends.

Nervalink pays its interns garbage. They want us to work "hardcore" for the "technology for the sake of humanity" blah blah, so now I'm here, trailing behind him with a camera, milking the rich bitch.

"Get me in front of the sign?"

"Make sure you get Socrates in the background."

I catch him while he's blinking.

The champagne flows and the tips come in. The bar's covered in glitter, a swarm of people dropping platinum cards on the counter, a pool of vodka spilled from a shot glass knocked over and he already has a towel in his hands.

It's hell and it's fine.

It's too many smashed glasses at the end of the night and a few drunk assholes who always want to start a fight. But it's money, so -- happy new year.

He pours a row of skittle bombs and a group of guys in feathered shirts knock them back, periwinkle blue and lavender and it's the colour of the season. There's a girl wearing a corset of a tapestry of the Horn of Plenty painting, leaning in to ask for a glass of water over the music, puffs of delicate tulle wrapped around her shoulders. It's Ajax Saga. It's the collection from the spring.

Someone slides him a twenty and asks for something special.

He pulls up a martini glass. Creme de violette, elderflower liqueur, vodka, champagne, and lemon. A lavender drink for the colour of the season, for the start of the new year.

"For you."

It's not as if the club ever had a quiet night, not even the day good old Snow finally kicked it, the party was almost double the size then, but something about New Years was different. Acts came on stage, one after the other, a few of them were personal friends that he'd invited himself, others were yearly mainstays. It was a beautiful thing to be a hot commodity and Method on New Years Eve? Everyone wanted a piece of that.

Literally nowhere else in the Capitol could claim to have a Crowe performing at their party, but Socrates had more than just his own name to draw talent in with. Copernicus Fenwick was a man that could get anyone anywhere and tonight, that was absolutely everyone who was anyone.

Make sense?

Socrates moved through the crowd slowly, working his way back to the bar took almost a full hour, there were too many old friends to greet and so many beautiful acts to cheer for. He kept getting sips of people's drink poured into his glass as a tribute for hosting and all Socrates could do about it was laugh. All of Hadrian's hard work to create beautiful elixirs ruined, turned into a murky brown sludge in a highball glass.

He found Effy first and gave her a pat on the shoulder in congratulations, "Good timing, darling," he said before moving off again. Then he turned just in time to wind up in someone's photoshoot. Socrates stuck his tongue out and flipped off the camera, you know, like a gracious host should.

He stopped to kiss Olympia's hand somewhere along the way, one should always pay their respects to an icon of the industry they take part in as a rule. There were a few other celebrity guests he paid homage to, friends, enemies of his too, they all wanted a piece of the pie, no one wanted to say that they weren't at the biggest party of the year.

Eons later, he arrived to the bar just in time to watch Hadrian hand an exquisite looking little cocktail off to a patron.

Socrates pushed himself up onto the bar and then swung his legs over so that his heels were resting right on Hadrian's work space. A cutting board used for lime wedges fell to the floor with a clatter.

"And what," he began, leaning forwards slowly, "Are you going to make for me then, my sweet, sweet Hadrian?"

He'd lost the highball glass after he'd emptied it. It was either broken or just a souvenir for one of his many fans, whatever. His accountant liked to complain that the club spent too much on glassware but she was also an incredibly boring person who never wanted Socrates to have any fun at all, she'd even said the fireworks were a bad idea.

Well, a few people had said that, fire hazard and all that, but what the hell is the point in ending a year with anything less than a BANG!
