I closed the front door of my lab/house behind me. It made a dull thud, accompanied by the reassuring click of the high technology latch. I walked with my hands in my pockets, to protect the money that was now folded up inside my fist.
I normally didn't go out into the sunlight on weekends, but today was an exception; my birthday. Everything around me seemed brighter and slightly happier, even for a District. I walked with a lightness in my step, which was rare given the heavy, clunky boots I was wearing.
Finally, my destination was in sight. The technology store. I sped up, eager to spend my birthday money on the latest chemistry kit or microscope. My toe hit a stray pebble, tipping my balance off and sending me face first into the pavement.
Coughing, I lifted my head and wiped the blood from my mouth, watching as someone started to walk in my direction.
