Is it over yet? [Jana vs Silver Siren]

Cyrus's face lit up the sky last night during the anthem. The guilt that had been Jana's closest companion throughout the Games was stronger than even. He was number three. Dying for her seemed to be what her allies did best. None survived to keep her company now; the eerie silence of the ship provided little distraction for her thoughts.

That mutt had been so tremendously big it was a miracle she was still here. The fight ended toward the end of Day 5 as the sun was beginning to go down and the water growing colder. Clinging to her like a lost child, her wet cloths didn't do much in the way of her mood. Rays of light had barely begun to reach her when she awoke. Gritty salty grossness was what she felt. Fire red hair soaked in brine and stuck to her already wet back.

What sat beside her was the knife that had kept her alive so far. Carefully she used the leg of her pants to wipe what dried blood was left on it away. It was the only thing she'd received from the cornucopia, and yet it was her savior. There were only eight of them left, sixteen dead. Canon. Seventeen dead. Someone died today. Knowing the nature of the Games this would probably not be the only canon today. Perhaps hers would join, who knew? Sadness tried to make its way into her but never reached her heart. The cold water had numbed her mind, body, and maybe even soul. She didn't know who was dead, and there was no sense in worrying about it so long as it wasn't her.

The District Seven girl quietly hoped that today she wouldn't have to fight today. Body weary and mind not sharp, a fight today would more than likely be disastrous. Every single day she'd been here someone or something had threatened her life. Escape from it all was impossible. Jana gave into the routine of trying to catch her breath only to be forced to defend herself once again. Did all the others have to fight for their very existence every day so far? If not then the Gamemakers must not like her very much. Not that she could blame them, she was nothing special. Not really what they wanted in a victor.

A flash of silver under the veil of the sea caught Jana's eye. Something was down there, something that surely wanted to get here. Savage beast and people were all that was left here. By now she would imagine all the remaining tributes but her had probably taken another human life. Muttations were all she had killed. You might as well say you killed Killian, Pan, and Cyrus... Her subconscious whispered. Shaking her head violently, Jana picked up her knife. This time she would attack first, no more waiting around. Balancing herself on the edge of the ship, her blade was plunged toward the unknown danger.

Calypso wasn't particularly belligerent, a sure sign that she was quite different from the majority of her species. She preferred going for interesting swims throughout these tropical waters rather than attacking various creatures, as she had been bred to do. She wasn't supposed to feel this way, not by any means. She was supposed to be vicious and ruthless, luring humans and other lesser sea creatures into her clutches through her irresistible song and then poison them with the razor sharp sting of her tail. Just like all other silver sirens. She did do that, whenever she had to; it was her job, her duty. But she didn't have to like it, did she?

The entire ocean was in an uproar since the previous day when the king of beasts, Davy Jones the Kraken, had fallen. They'd all watched him battle the humans - and successfully kill one of them, obviously - but then be beaten by the other, just a small female one. It had been absolutely baffling, but no one was particularly upset to be rid of his oppressive regime; in contrast, all the sea-mutts were celebrating. That was by Calypso had swum away to distance herself from all the hubbub; she wanted the peace and quiet of a nice, calm swim. Was that too much to ask?

It was when she was lazily circling a sunken shipwreck that she spotted a person swimming up to it. Discreetly the siren peeked above the water, and she couldn't believe her eyes. Was that the human who had killed Davy Jones? It sure looked like it. Her small muttation brain was in turmoil; should she attack? If she could kill this human, perhaps every creature in the ocean would respect her at last. Sure, she didn't particularly like violence, but it was in her better interests, right? She longed to fit in, for once.

So she attacked.

Instead of puncturing the flesh of the mutt, her knife seemed to glance off it. Like the creature blocked her attack with some part of its body. Jana bit her lip nervously as the hope of ending it in one quick swipe was banished. Once again she'd been forced into a fight that would probably drag on and on. Ripples in the water gave a general idea of where the beast lurked, but still it was hard to judge exactly where to aim her next attack. Strangely enough she longed to fight a mutt like the cat again. At least then they were on the same turf. Getting in the water with it may be the only way to land a clean blow, but staying on the ship seemed so much safer. Exhaustion from the day before made the prospect of trying to fight while swimming a most unwelcome one. No, she'd stick to land, well boat, for now. Needless to say all the guilt and regret for her former companions was gone in the wind. Now her attention was completely focused on what hide beneath the water's surface.

Something sharp came in contact with the back of her hair. It cut through pale skin and let blood leak into her hair. The colors close enough that you wouldn't know she was wounded by looking at her from a distance. "What the hell? I'm so friggin sick of you stupid mutts! Leave. Me. Alone." The plea was ground out in a voice friend's back home would hardly recognize as Jana. She hadn't even see what hit her before it disappeared back into the depths. Desperation was setting in, along with a twinge of insanity. Salt water sprayed her face as she plunged the knife into the sea once more.

Calypso wasn't used to pain, so when the human made contact with her sleek, scaly flesh it was all she could do not to tumble down in the depths of the water, completely beaten. But she was stronger than that, wasn't she? She was a silver siren; they'd been bred to take hits, and dish them right back. She had been able to injure the human as well, after all; surely she was on the right track. Surely someone would be proud of her after this. Right?

A smile found its way to chapped lips once the knife made contact with the mutt. The damage seemed to be enough to slow the damn thing down if nothing else. Clouds of the beats blooding temporarily made it harder to see. In that moment pain began to spread in her right arm. Seeping slowly from her skin was a red line. Once again the damn thing hit in with an amazingly quick attack before returning to the water. This mutt was surely not as intimidating as the Kraken, or the feline, but it possessed it's own dangers. The back of Jana's head throbbed, making her mind hazy be it from pain or anything else.

"The quicker one of us dies, preferably you, the quicker one of us can go home..." Talking to the muttations was a habit Jana seemed to have since the beginning of the Games. As if she could logic with them the way she could another tribute. And in all honest, the mutts might be more capable of showing mercy than some of the remaining humans at this point in the Games. They were pawns to these mutts. If tributes didn't kill them, they'd most likely be destroyed following the Games. But now was not the sorry her the stinger-tailed foe, now was the time to kill it.

Okay, so this was proving to be a bit harder than she'd initially thought. Calypso wondered what she'd gotten herself into; after all, this human had killed the Kraken. Clearly she was a force to be reckoned with, and what sort of stupid little siren thought she could take her on? Well, now that she'd gotten herself into this mess there was no turning back. She would do everything in her power to kill this human, no matter what it took. She would do something right, for a change, and gain ocean-wide notoriety for it at the same time.

She was reaching the end... but surprisingly, so was the human. Calypso was a little bewildered by her own power. Had she really done that? Seriously injured something that was much bigger than her? Perhaps the human had already been beat up because of its previous day's fight with the Kraken; Davy Jones could beat anyone up. That was more likely; there was no way Calypso had done all this herself. No way she was strong enough.
