There are still times, after everyone else has fell victim to their slumber, that I find myself lying under the blank canvas of a starless night, staring past the twinkling lights of the bloodthirsty city and into the deep pits of hell itself. I can't shake my stark feeling of unease as I observe the dark blanket of artificiality that sits above our towering jail. (I am trapped in an iron cage of lust) I think, slowly, as I turn the burned nub of a cigarette between my bruised fingers bruised from the insanity I had fallen into since declaring myself as a career. I don't expect company nor do I expect any attention as I lie against the hard ground of the roof and listen to the distant music of the cities' sleepless residents. Therefore, when the unspoken footsteps of a fellow insomniac (or something) sneaks up on me, I waste no time in springing forth from my inactivity and facing the intruder with a burning glare.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, sneaking around like that?" I accuse as I observe the wisp of a boy.

If I could start again,

I can't help but love thinking that everyone doesn't get it

The days have left their bruises on me; they punched through the barrier that uses to cover my every step and left me barley breathing for a chance to go on.. When I promised never to be changed by the games I never knew the hinges could be opened so widely. I would never truly be myself again as I once were in District 3. I am wise enough to see that. It gives me no reasons to sneak up onto the roof because of hollow thoughts, but I still do it anyways. The breeze will help me settle and the muted music will be a melody to my ears. As I step onto the roof and let my worn feet guide me, I’m greeted by a question. Being so use to being called out and being scared is over, my hands barley even start to tremble.“I was not really sneaking around, I just wanted to come out here. What are you doing here?” I call back as I move closer to him, if he wanted to kill me he could do it in a few days.

The rage I had initially displayed across my carved features was only a lie, and it's fire quickly seeped out to display the true softness behind my stone soul. I wasn't in any danger up here, not tonight, and my quick reaction only proved the depth of my conformity the shaking hands of District Three had no power behind them. He just looked weak as he stood under the black sky with his soft eyes drifting hesitantly towards me. I just couldn't bring myself to hate him at the moment, despite how much of a right I had to loathe any and all of my enemies in this arena of the Capitol's entertainment.

“I was not really sneaking around, I just wanted to come out here. What are you doing here?” His voice cracked with trembling anticipation, fear it betrayed the depth of his fragility. I felt the urge to count to ten as I considered his loose-ended question. (one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten) Breath.

"I..." My voice broke as I moved away away from his quivering figure. "Err...I thought I'd catch some air up here. The training center is a little too close-quartered for my taste." It as an honest answer a safe answer, and I could see no harm in sharing , at the very least, a little bit of information. (it's not like he'd live to remember it)

"I...I thought I'd catch some air up here. The training center is a little too close-quartered for my taste." The glare that once burned into me as I entered his eyesight disappeared as a softer more timid voice spilt through the sky. Even the shadows betrayed him and no longer would hide the menacing figure that I first thought I saw. Instead he shrunk to a more timid form that shook away the barren fear that tugged at me. Instead of retracting to a distance I moved closer and closer until I recognized the career. Cassius Birch from District two, even walking by him I could never rid the stench of liquor and smoke that drifted off of him. For some odd reason he always enticed me, I never knew why. Maybe it was his dark grin or no care attitude but it made me want to talk to him, maybe experience a friendship for my last days in the training center.

“Same with me, I always found the air comforting when stuck in a tight place.” I tip toe towards him and take a seat a few meters away from him, hugging my knees to my face. “I’m Ezra if you did not know.”

The shy boy decides to take a risk and edge closer to my menacing figure. (I know you're afraid of me) if I had the nerve, I would whisper my threats into his cautious ear, perhaps in an attempt to distance myself from whoever he is. I don't understand my own action when my body betrays my doubtful soul and folds itself across from the boy...who gave it a right to trust such a stranger?

"I'm Ezra, if you did not know." His voice had a faerie-like quality even in his hushed vulnerability, like it was being carried towards me in a random wisp of wind (is this a secret too deep for me to hear?) I feel caution seep throughout the veins I proudly display across my body, yet the unjustified side of me finds itself nodding and hissing the greeting back.

"Cassius." I respond simply as I turn my hands over within themselves. "Well Ezra," I tell him seriously, "Guess we better breath in all the air we possibly can because who knows, it might be in low supply in the arena." To mark this irony, I take out one of my precious cigarettes and light it in celebration. I inhale quickly, and hold the smoke in my mouth. The cigarette I hold up as a peace offering to Ezra before arching my back and blowing the smoke off into the air. "There you go. Blow your worries away." If only it was that easy.
