Tried to break love to a science
In an act of pure defiance
I broke his heart.

He was my oxygen.

I would spent all my hours catering to him, reminding him when it was time to take his pills, tucking the quilt around his frail, shivering body when he had fever. On those days, I'd even refuse to let him leave the bed.

"But I'm fi-"

"You need rest."

Most would have been long frustrated with my compulsion to pamper and care for, but Owen? Owen wasn't like most. He'd humour me, let me go through the motions just so I'd have the satisfaction of being able to do something for him. His clear, blue eyes would help calm my fretting over his constant state of illness.

As I pulled apart his theories 

As I watched him growing weary 

I pulled him apart.

But in my haste to keep him alive, I had forgotten to let him live.

Every breath he took, I'd broken it down to injections and pills and medical things, not even discerning the point at which I had fallen hopelessly in love with him. But he knew. All along, he knew his time and mine.

And our love, too, was like a cancer.

It emerged from our lips; a kiss. And before I knew it, I was saying the words I never thought I'd ever hear myself say. I love you. It spread further, tainting us in the most beautiful of ways. Plastic rings emerged on the fourth fingers of our left hands. { I told him marriage didn't work that way. He told me he didn't care. } But like every disease left untreated, the end is inevitable.

Of all of the things that he's ever said 

He goes and says something that just knocks me dead. 

It was terminal.

My days with him were numbered.

Tears clung to my eyes whenever I was with him. We'll get through it, he'd say. If I wasn't filled with so much grief at the time, I would be angry. Owen was never fazed by anything, but this, this should've fazed him. 

His eyes held no fear, just the warmth that was always there, and sadness. For me. 

And so I let go of my compulsions, letting him take care of me for once. Together, we glued back the broken bits and saw through the cracks. We laughed, we bickered, we cried, and we walked along hazy sunsets with sand-filled toes and a million things to talk about.

And I held his hand, cold and lifeless.

And I stood by him as the earth welcomed his body.

I close my eyes and he's there, the blue of his eyes looking back at me with a grinning expression. And I know that he's happy.

Are you, Zel?

His voice takes me by surprise, but no one's there when I turn to look. I smile.

"I am."
