Jolly Roger Strangways-Teach grew up too fast. His beard grew to match, even if his face hasn't caught up yet. He's quick to laugh, to smile, but he stays his hand with sincerity. Some nights, he's not sure he's equipped to deal with feeling anything. Just drunk or cold or itchy.

Still, they call him Jolly Rodger because they've always called him Jolly Roger, and he's willing to fake it to keep the moniker and the peace. His parents should've named him Fender, he thinks. It suits the boy who traded his childhood defending the rocky armistice between his mother and father and sister. Constantly sandwiched between an unstoppable force and an immovable object, Jolly Roger was destined to be crushed.

He armored himself in rum, in dark corners and dark alleys, in bad company and worse ideas. On Tuesdays he'd sneak onto the big trawlers and unload crates of fish onto his own truck, then swap the fish for grog or weed or something else he can sell at his own pace.

Hopping a ship to plunder the others on the high seas was the logical progression. It was good for Roger, to spend time away from home, away from the mother that he and Brig would decide over beers "So mom's a sociopath, right?", away from the father that never stood his own ground. Away from the little sister that would depend on him in one breath and overshadow him in the next. It was easier, not to care. To take what he could and give nothing back.
