He's a real nowhere man.

He misses home, oddly enough. Even weirder is the fact that home is nothing but a fortress of his mother’s shadows, or coal mines coughing up hollowed out boys, or a moth-eaten bed that feels too big. But, even hell can make a boy long for darkness and emptiness if it means he won’t have to feel scared.

Cedric Lane burrows himself against the palm of the giant skeleton’s hand, puts on his sunglasses, and tries to sleep.

But, sleep doesn’t come easy to those who fear of never waking from it. In his nightmares, the skeleton hands come to life and drag him underground, drowning him in the dust of the field and in the blood of the two lost girls.

He wakes up in a sweat.

He spends the rest of the night with his head between his knees and his palms intertwined over the back of his head. It isn’t a good night. Silence rings in his ears like a lullaby while the empty, rotting space around him grows darker and darker with each passing minute. If there is a difference between being empty and being lonely, he thinks, then this moment has showed me it.

He misses home.

He misses his mom. He misses the mind-numbing work of the mines. He misses Astrid. He misses Astrid. He misses Astrid.

He sees something crawl towards him from the corner of his eye, picks up his godlike hammer, and prays that he doesn’t miss.

Scattered bones picked and placed back together seemingly by magic, or some unknown force, formed the child of a historic beast. Breathing. Living. The baby bone dragon had lost its way from the pack, and somewhere in this arena perhaps a nest of them had laid awaiting for their mothers return.

The sound of clacking bones, grinding together screeched against the humid air in the cavern. It was just one of them, a lost child seeking the return of the nest, until facing something it had never seen before. Hatched straight from its nest within the arena, this is the first form of human contact, unless taken by the Gamemakers for further testing.

Stepping into their territory, Valak, the baby bone dragon lashes out toward the male tribute.

The hammer connects to the spider-like mutt and he hardly has time to believe it before something else claws at his arm. That something is an apparatus of bones, an impossible machine of an ivory carcass. He flinches, more at the disbelief of what he’s seeing than at the scratch it’s etched into his left arm. Ruby-red drops bloom from the gash, like a faucet with a leak. His right hand moves to touch the wound, to stain its fingers with its own blood, as if to see if it’s really real. It could be worse. It could be people. It could be trained Careers who could snap his neck as easily as a stick. It could be poisonous gas with the power to burn his lungs from just one whiff. It could be a ghost, in the shape of his mother, or Constantine, or Astrid. It could be something he never would’ve had a chance against. But, luckily, Cedric knows a thing or two about vermin. (He fears many things, but he doesn’t fear himself.)

The spiked blunt collided with the back of its head, surprisingly not collapsing on impact. Soft screeching escaped the bone dragons mouth, its bone jaws released from a snapping grip. The faint sound of a cry for help from its mother, Valak would've rather fled than fight had it not been designed to destroy the boy. Momma ain't raise no pussies.

Lacking in size, strength, bone durability and health, the baby bone dragon still bit just as hard. After recovering from the impact of the attack, Valak snapped its sharp fangs at the boy from Twelve.
