Drake Harvest

I was doing so well, on the verge of succeeding, of leaving this wooden cabin alive. Instead, I will be leaving it in a casket caked with my cold blood. My ears flick towards the sound of three canons booming as I begin to rush towards the door, the exit, then I feel the blade slice through my leg, and I fall to the ground with a thud.

No scream, or cry of pain escapes through my mouth. I stay quiet, the same as it has been my entire life. Never talking, never letting anything show how much something hurt, but the few tears that begin to leak down through my now bloody face betray how I want to seem. I don't want my mother to watch me die in a pool of my own tears.

I don't want her to see me die at all. I want to be back at home with her, back when I was a little boy, first beginning to work in the golden wheat fields. I want to be that little boy who would snuggle up close to her and cry all I wanted to when the bullies would make fun of my stammer. Back when I decided to speak as little as possible, I would still speak with her.

Now I had to let her watch as I became a monster for a brief amount of time, attacking and striking out at those around me just to have nothing good come out of it. Just like always in here. It has been seen countless times. Those who let their demons take hold never win, even if they make it out alive.

My face is caked in blood, that last blow delivered by the boy from district four was enough to put me on my stomach. I can just hear Capricious King getting my canon ready, her brown eyes waiting for the light on my tracker to blink out, signaling my death.

I let out a racking cough.

I don't know if she is still here because my eyes are filled with the red color of blood, but I need to at least say sorry for what I said back in the training center.

"Hey Hyacinth, are you there?" I say to what I hope isn't open air in my quiet voice, "Sorry, about what I said back in the training center. I hope you weren't lying when you said you weren't her." I struggle to move my face into a grin, letting out a small laugh that transformed into a cough.

"Don't use my bones as armor please."

Hyacinth Mortuus

At the term monster, she thought of Celia. Trained in the art of senseless mutilation whilst the world around her crumbled. Her sins had been enough to capture an entire country’s attention, and now Hyacinth was forced to sprint in her shadow. To become this type of monster was not her intention – she wanted to break herself apart from expectation, but there was a point in time at which deliberation lost itself in the void of violence. She swung her axe without a second thought, without weighing the consequences of who perished and how. It was after a moment like this that reality dawned on her; there were different breeds of monsters, and she was pretty sure she was among the toxic.

She paused to catch her breath, inhaling iron-stained air particles. This stony bridge already tasted of death and destruction, and although she hadn’t killed anybody yet, there was an unmistakable pattern in her attempts to stray away from Celia’s reputation. Scoring an eleven, conquering the Bloodbath instead of escaping it, severing a leg with one clean swing of an axe – she had not thought herself capable of these things. It should be somewhat frightening, but it didn’t scare her. How did that paint her then? As a survivor, a monster? A girl stranded between two evils, or perhaps a concoction of both.

At least if she was a monster, she was her own monster. Celia’s ghost would not make a comeback today.

There were four bodies, two struck down by Mordecai. She counted them – one, two, three…

”Hey Hyacinth, are you there?”

Four.

She turned around and recognized the aftermath; an amputated calf, and the gaping wound on the side of his head. Mordecai’s finishing blow.

I didn’t know it was you. She didn’t say it out loud.

He spent his first dying breaths apologizing. Wasted on someone like Hyacinth, the criminal prostitute who tried to offer her hand five days ago, only to pull it away and backstab the very idea of friendship. Now she had to do what Celia never would – suffer the consequences.

”I didn’t lie,” she said, thinking there was an illusion painted on his face, but there wasn’t. He was grinning. A dying boy could grin while she hadn’t cracked a real smile in months. She envied the purity of it.

”You can keep your bones.”

Drake Harvest

The grin fades from my face as the stinging taste of blood enters my mouth, it had leaked down from the gushing wound on my ear. I take a moment to spit it out, coughing and cringing as I rolled over to my side to let the liquid drip out onto the wooden floor of the house. I can feel my heart beat steadily growing slower and slower as the blood leaves my system. The noise pounds loudly in my singular remaining ear.

Thump.......... thump......... thump...

I can't really hear her voice that well, but the statements still make it to me.

I didn't lie, she says, You can keep your bones.

My face grows peaceful, "Thanks." I say quietly, my voice growing even weaker, "All I wanted was to remain intact." I say before my eyes downwards at my leg severed by the girl standing above. A small, garbled laugh leaves my body.

"At least, mostly intact."

I end up coughing again, trying to stop the blood from choking me to die. I would prefer to die through blood loss, not choking on my own blood.

"Hey Hyacinth." I say, the first time I actually said her name. Never in the training center. I was always too afraid to mention her in the training center.

"When you get back to the capitol," I continue on, my voice almost gone now. "Can you tell Kirito that I guess I wasn't quite ready to survive yet."

With that, I lay my head against the floor, I can hear my heartbeat still, but just faintly. My thoughts are growing muddy. Time to say goodbye to the world, I suppose. Goodbye to my mother, goodbye to my cousins, goodbye to Kirito and Harbingher and Katelyn and Desimae, goodbye to Hyacinth, goodbye to the animal art resting upon my clutter desk back at home.
