Noise brings comfort to Carter Laws.

It's not as overwhelming as he expects it to be, but his parents had already been in, just like Jack had been too. Coward stinging on Carter's own lips like the fire that burned Jack Corradi-Laws' parents to ash. Two Laws that had been his best friends since they were younger lost because Jack promised to give himself up in their place. How much of a lie that had been because now Carter's sitting in a room waiting for the train to take him away from his life and to a strange coffin where killers roam. Legacies of their own to create while his crumbles to ash. If he's lucky, maybe a yeti will grace him with a quick death unlike Mitchell's gurgled words of blood.

Carter had been his last words.

Fingers tap rhythmically to the sound of his own heartbeat that's found it's way up into his throat like he was going to spit it out still beating. Always searching for that calm water to ride on, instead of the drowning static that crackles over and over again. They say lightning never strikes twice on the same place, but it had for them. In fact, it struck three times on the Laws and it would probably strike more times after him. Hopefully Jack would feel what he felt, despite his hatred, he still loved his adopted brother. Humans were selfish. Selfish creatures that wanted to live until they can't live no more.

That's what all of them wanted, but he can't have that. Mitchell and him were doomed to live until their names were pulled out of a glass bowl. Everyone comes in and Carter gives them a prideful smile like nothing was wrong. Despite death's tar dragging him into the ball of anxiety in his chest. Anger in his throat, but he holds it from Jack's meeting with him before the train comes. All he says is the words that Mitchell Laws had once told him.

"I love you. All of you."

Elyra Breaks-Laws.

She has no idea why the sound of his name was such a pain in her ears. They barely know each other as she is adopted and shy, but this sucks... No, it stings. Right in the middle of her heart it hurts like she's been stung by a bee, like the person who has just been picked is Sirius or Xen. She doesn't want him to die. He should come back because - in a different way - but he is a brother too.

She enters the creepy room quietly, in the middle of her siblings' crowd, hoping that it is not really time to say goodbye yet. They all need more time - but it's a luxury they won't have.

"I love you. All of you."

What he is saying seems like the only thing that can be said now. He might live, he might die. But die is more possible and she can't change the odds even if she wanted. And if he doesn't return, his name will be about everything she is going to remember. His name and this short phrase.

The Capitol is cruel - taking children away, one by one, sometimes dragging every child in a family away to their deaths. How many Laws has the Capitol claimed? How many of them ended their life to the drum of the games' canon? Two are gone already, and the third might follow soon.

She knows nothing can be changed, but something has to be done to at least break this awful silence.

"My mother used to say that every time you see a butterfly, someone's thinking about you. I'm sure you'll see lots of butterflies because we all love you too and we'll be waiting."

This promise is all she can give him now. This and a kind smile to hide the sadness in her grey eyes.

None of them would ever know that I didn’t visit Gabriel in the Justice Building.

None of them would ever know that I thought Gabriel was cruel to his family for volunteering for a stranger.

None of them would know, because this situation was completely different. I didn’t think even for a second about not visiting Carter in the Justice Building. I didn’t think he was cruel- not even one bit. Sure, despite living in the same household, we hadn’t been as close as I would have liked to have been, but I still cared about him and was sure that, had the situation been in reverse, and it were me reaped instead of him, he’d have visited me, too.

He didn’t deserve abandonment.

”I love you. All of you.” He told us this and I responded with a somewhat weak smile. I loved him too, as a sibling, but wasn’t sure exactly what to say at first. It took me a moment to think, but luckily, Elyra’s words gave me time to craft my own properly.

”I love you, too, Carter, and I believe in you. You’re strong and you’re a good person who deserves to make it out of this alive.” That sounded cheesy. Come on, Jayne, say something more...

”Just don’t forget to trust yourself more than anyone else. Use your own judgment and don’t let what others say to you in that arena get to you. You can do this. You’re strong.” I stood up and placed my hand on his shoulder.

”Now get out there and kick some ass.”
