NaNoWriMo 2011

So we had a thread for NaNo last year, figured I'd start one for 2011^^ For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about, NaNoWriMo. Feast your eyes.

Welcome Home

Sebastian Barnes, fifteen years old, is constantly told that he is a "disappointment." His dyslexia has always made school difficult for him, and so at one point he just stopped trying - that is, until he was notified that he was going to fail out of sophomore year if he didn't shape up. After being given a report to complete for extra credit, he goes to the library to do some research...and finds himself in another world entirely.

Bringing true meaning to the popular saying "Home is where your story begins," Home is a dimension in which every story in creation originates. Each story has its own little corner of Home, governed by a monarch stationed in the City of Myths, Home's central ruling city located near the top of Mt. Legend. Deep within the mountain is a secret library, containing a single copy of every book in existence. Destroy one of these books, and its corresponding story vanishes from Earth forever.

And since the very birth of Home, there has been a group of people hell-bent on doing just that.

They haven't had very much luck so far. The whereabouts of the Master Library have been a preciously guarded secret for thousands of years, so the Hunters content themselves by destroying each story world in Home little by little, wreaking widespread havoc across the entire nation. Finally Home's queen decides enough is enough, and calls upon the help of an Earth human...who just so happens to be Sebastian, the dyslexic boy who hates reading and has never picked up a single book for leisure in his life. Seb is given an ultimatum: help protect the stories of the universe from total destruction, or never return to his true life again.

Here is the synopsis of my NaNo this year: "The Essence of Madness"

Seven troubled high school students are sent into a world of chaos as one of their group dies in the the town's annual haunted maze. Soon, the rest of them begin to die as well, but it is unclear how. Is someone after them? Is God punishing their wrongs? Are they killing themselves off? No one knows what to agree on, no one knows what they should do, but everyone knows that soon, no one will be left. Between hallucinations, near death events, and being blamed for murders that even you're unsure if you are the culprit of or not, it is amazing how quickly the essence of madness can engulf someone.

Molly Jones is perfectly happy as is. Has an amazing boyfriend, loyal friends, decent grades, an okay home life. That is, until her boyfriend cheats on her with her older sister, leaving her broken, and her mother walks out on them after too much "bickering." Her social life steadily falls, and she finds herself alone, and incredibly insecure. She turns to her mother's best friend: Adam, the Plastic Surgeon. Bribing him with a mediocre college fund, plus the average fee, he agrees to touch the teen up. Breast augmentation, Blepharoplasty, and suction-assisted lipectomy. When the procedure goes awry, however, no one's to blame but Molly.

Damaged nervous system and Anesthesia in her breasts, it's obvious to her peers what she has done when she returns to school. She picks up some very nasty nicknames, and endures intense teasing and harassment, both sexual and verbal. When depression and fear for her health take hold, the teen learns a valuable life lesson. Perfection isn't just skin-deep.

When Lightning Strikes

Mia doesn't remember anything before she woke up in that hospital bed feeling worse than she ever has before. Nothing. At least, that's what the doctors say. And that's what they are telling everyone else- they say that being struck by lightning can really damage a person's memory. But Mia does remember. She can't remember the important things, like who is in her family, or who her friends are, or how old she is. But she can remember being angry, and then the flash...

Mia's memories after that point scare her. They make no sense- creatures made of light, dinosaurs, a boy with wide orange and black striped eyes. The lights told her that lightning is special. Though mostly, it is what scientists say it is, once every now and then... it is so much more. It is, in fact, the universe splitting ever so slightly. That was what struck Mia. That was what changed her forever. But these are all hallucinations, of course.

Olympia high

In the mist cloaked mountains of Greece, there is an exclusive school for those with veneficus mutations, in laymens terms, Magic. These teenagers are trained, their lives becoming active experiments without their knowing. To them, it's normal high school life, just with some hexes mixed in. The school system is simple. The children are sorted into 12 different rankings, each an Olympian god, sorted by their personalities, and an entry test taken when starting the school. Until they reach 18, these children cannot leave for any reason not sanctioned by the school; Olympia high.

Jay Mentissi, our 16 year old Hades with a taste for mischief, is one of them. The crazy conspiracy theorists that just knows the world is out to get them. Jay has only recently transferred to this school, from a big city in Ohio, is still to discover his powers, which rage more and more out of control as the final exams draw near. He just knows something is going to happen. Something big. After weeks of meticulous plans and one espionage mission with his class mate, and rival of sorts- Arianna Deansworth-, they discover that maybe what Jay says isn't so far off. The school is planning something, and they're not going down without a fight. After all, she's a sarcastic Athena with an attitude, and he's a juvenile delinquent who hears voices- what could go wrong?

Even Mom, who walked out and started the chain of events that would end up being our nightmare (or was it your Heaven? I could never really tell). She kissed you on the forehead and said to be strong, be brave, and take care of Dad.

Well, you did more than that, didn't you? Every little action wormed your way into his heart until it all blurred together, and you were more than father and daughter ever should be. I had to watch on the sidelines as you fell in love with him and he reciprocated in kind; hesitantly at first, but he fell for your charms in the end. I suppose it wasn't your fault. All you wanted to do was make him happy again, right? Make him smile like he used to? But it was wrong what went on behind closed doors, and I should have stopped it before it had a chance to take root. I failed the only thing Mom asked of me before she walked out and never came back. Take care of you.

Now you're locked up forever in white walls and empty hallways with needles and pills. I want so badly to take care of you but you're so far out of my reach that nothing can bring you back. I'm so sorry.

Lord in heaven. Someone talk me the hell out of this. I do not have tiiiiime. Dx Bloody ideas and RL friends who goad me into it so they have writing buddies and parents who do it every year too and that goddamn castle and *devolves into a mess of angry, incoherent ramble-mutters*

When nine-year-old Reilly Macon used forbidden magic and a family heirloom to travel to pre-apocalyptic times, he was intending to save his world. Instead, he finds himself stumbling lost and stranded in a world in just as much pain as his own. Under the wing of high school junior Candice, who sees him as the clearest link to the place where her best friend went missing, he searches for signs of the coming disaster, struggling all the while with questions of whether changing his past is fair to her future.

If he asked teenage failure Sherwood Payne, Candice's missing friend, he would be told that neither world truly matters enough to be saved. Sherwood, however, is trapped in Reilly's time. Distraught but determined, he travels from town to town with a soft-spoken message runner named Jacqueline. All he wants is to hunt for a path home, but the search is putting him in touch with parts of him that he never knew about or wanted.

Jackie, who has spent her entire life resisting ties to people and places alike, sympathizes. She lives on the road with her horse and has never needed or wanted company, but she can't help but feel responsible for the boy she found sprawled across his route. The attachment is unfamiliar and frightening—any yet it may not be the worst thing that ever happened to her. In some strange way, looking after Sherwood seems to be her method of making up for some regret that she won't tell him about.

All four have spent their entire lives trying to make up for something, it seems. Now, as four lives and two worlds intertwine, they have their chance—but not even magic can promise them that they will finally succeed in wrenching themselves from the paths they set years ago.

Maybe this time they can do it.

Maybe not.

Jackie, incidentally, uses her message routes in order to run a black market business in bottled emotions. >D I am going to have so much fun with this idea, I can't even. People poisoning each others' drinks (Giving someone depression via regular doses of grief? Artificially creating an abusive household? And then not getting blamed for it, ever, because anyone who knew to accuse you would themselves be put on trial for being wrapped up in illegal trade? Possible plot points, yesplz.) and getting addicted to happiness and oh, the effects on her...

Repairs stopped and the Colosseum left to crumble in the early sixth century, the ancient Romans were forced to find other means of torture and celebration through the years. The competitions were drawn to a stop, and the bloodshed ceased. For a little while, at least.

Old habits die hard. The human race, with its insatiable thirst for gore, its insistent hunger for carnage, draws many back to ancient times, the times for wars and tortures, the times for appropriate punishment. When people have become such monsters, throwing them in a cell for the rest of their miserable lives or injecting them with a lethal poison just doesn't seem to leave those hurt by crimes and sins content.

The Colosseum is repaired, and reset, all new prisoners condemned for all new crimes. Franchises are created, in which you can purchase a live feed, to watch the gory battles and beatings 24/7, multiple copies of the Colosseum are placed around the world. Torture has become a sport.


Lol so yeah, it's lacking a bit now, but I actually really like this idea, and I think I'd enjoy writing it and fleshing out the plot line. <3 :D Opinions?[/color][/size][/justify][/blockquote][/ul]

I'm doing it this year! This is my first year doing it, and I don't really have a plan yet. But I'm working on it. I have vague here and there ideas, but on the whole, I don't really know.

I did go over my goal for Post-a-thon though, so I might pull through. xD
