A simple moment to look back on and nothing more. A childhood with joy, even through the fog. Now it has all drifted away, far from sight. Some of the memories are blurry now, small details plucked away through the years. How such a tight friendship could collapse so quickly is beyond me, just another day and he was never there. Cub and I used to wait, the usual spot and no arrival of our third friend would come. So many encounters with him since, our eyes would meet, and it was if he had forgotten who I am. Now every day I hear his name mentioned, my best friend Teddy Ursa, now a victor and stranger.
Life must go on. Pushing trolleys through hospital corridors, I take all the sick on a journey through the meandering building. Such a simple existence I lead now. Each evening I am met by the force of my father, disappointment at the lack of doctor before my name. Just a roll of my eyes is all I can deliver. My head is too big to fit a crown on top, dreams are a in festering addiction that I would rather not get involved in, I am who I am and there is no changing it.
The streets used to be my playground, now they are the location of my second job. Such an easy industry to get into in District Six, I move patients by the day and drugs by the night. It was always expected of me, to go off the rails, well I carried all those expectations.
An old friend sits on a throne and I don’t even get the dust below it.
