KATELYN PERSIMMON

***Appearance***

A Capitol publication once reffered to Katelyn's hair as resembling rays of sunshine glinting through a cloudy sky. When she was younger, her father used to describe her locks as wheat stalks swaying in a gentle autumn breeze. Kate's thin eyebrows are usually turned up in a bemused surprise or aggravated annoyance, arching over her cerulean eyes and fluttery lashes. Her eyes have always been shockingly blue, but some would say they've lost a bit of their luster; that a deep weariness can be seen in them more often than not. Moving downward, her nose and ears are a tad long, but not too long for her face; in fact, one could say they match her neck. Pert, full lips are set above a pointed chin that rounds out her entire head.

At five foot ten, she's taller than the average girl, and her willowy frame only adds to the perception of her height. In addition, Katelyn makes a great effort to hone her body and keep it fit, and it shows as she's covered in lean muscle. Generally, she can be found dressed in a crop top and jean combination that show cases most of the twenty-three tattoos that adorn her body, the names of each of the tributes that died in the sixty-ninth games. If one were to visit her inside her home, they may catch a glimpse of a flour dusted apron, but she rarely has visitors while she's cooking.

***Personality***

Before the year of the sixty-ninth hunger games, her friends would have said that Katelyn was sweeter than apple cider. That she was never without compliment for someone, a pick me up, or maybe a tasty treat. It was clear that her gentle nature had a soft spot for young children and small furry animals. They might have said that she could be naive, having an idealized view of the people that lived in the world around her because she always tried to see the best in them, whoever they were.

It was known that in her spare time, she could be found picking berries or other fruits and turning them into pies or other treats. Her hobby. as she found the process of mixing, kneading, rolling and filling those delicious pastries to have an aesthetically pleasing effect. She once said that the smell of rising crust intertwining with the sweet scent of fruit marinating in its own juices was one of the best things in the world.

Of course, that was all before she left the district and came home a victor.

In more recent days, it has become obvious that the warmth that used to radiate from her has dimmed. It's still there, but less visible. After what she endured in the arena, Katelyn has a greater tendency to be blunt, to tell people the truth without a sugarcoat. She may still try to see the best in people, but she doesn't let that stop her from seeing their glaring flaws. Her old hobby has become a stress relief exercise for her, and it is now common for the nearest kitchen to be swamped in desserts as she tries to calm herself down. Deep in her mind, she still wants to give help to the people that need it, but as her job description now entails keeping one of two people alive every year, most of her energies have become focused on that.

*** History***

Born an only child to a stay at home mom with culinary skills and a father who managed a cherry grove, Katelyn's childhood was altogether unremarkable and not that different from many of the other children in the district. Like many of the people in the lowest districts, she grew up knowing that the annual games was a terrible ordeal, and harbored feelings of hate towards the Capitol for putting people through it, as well as despising the amount of food they took every harvest.

As her father was a manager, they were slightly more well off than most others in the district, a fact she learned when she was eleven and met a homeless child around her age scrounging around an orchard for fruit too bruised or rotten to be sold. Confronted with this knowledge, she made the decision at a young age to help people by bringing them food. By the time she was thirteen, she had taken it upon herself to send pastries to the homes of families that had lost someone to the arena.

But Katelyn's life changed forever when she was seventeen, as she was selected to the the female tribute from district eleven for the sixty-ninth hunger games. At first, she cried, before settling into a quiet depression, fully believing that she was going to die, given how her district had performed for the last decade, if not longer. While in the training center, she approached the girl from eight, Velocity Rush, having seen that was a little unstable and in need of help; one of the tributes from six, Ellexias Verisity by name, had had the same idea, soon after, Lexi's district partner had shown up, and with the inclusion ofMarchello Donner the four tributes formed an alliance, none of them wanted to face the arena alone; none of them were built for violence.

The arena was an arctic nightmare with chilling temperatures, but she scarcely noticed that at first.The bloodbath was a ghastly affair that kicked off with the death of Velocity, the first of many images to be frozen into her memory. Not long after, Katelyn killed her first person, the battered Dillon Hartman from district three, who had been flailing around on the ground with missing limbs. Katelyn had decided to put the poor girl out of her misery, having convinced herself that it was the only way she could help. As the week wore on, Katelyn and the pair from six faced off against tributes, mutts, and the elements, emerging victorious every time, though not without cost, as they suffered numerous injuries in the process, Marc's being the most grievous.

After a feast that left four tributes dead, Katelyn knew that with only a handful of people left alive in the arena, there was a good chance that she'd be forced to kill one of her allies sooner rather than later. But after fighting, sleeping and bleeding alongside them, she knew she'd never be able to do that. And so rather than deal with that, she left while Marc was knocked out, saying goodbye as chose Lexi did the same. But the following day, she wound up helping Lexi fend off two of the other tributes. While Lexi was nearly killed, it was the boy from three that fell instead, and Katelyn dragged her friend to safety.

Marc's face was in the sky that night, but Katelyn forced herself to keep going, telling herself to be glad that she had not killed him herself. One day before the finale, she faced off against Chaske Parks from district nine in a bloody battle and emerged victorious only a hairs breadth away from death, before going on to face Margaret Dubois in order to go home, and earn vengeance for her friends from six, both having fallen to the other girl in the arena over the previous two days. 

Against all odds, the amateur pastry chef from district eleven slew the other girl and went home an unlikely victor. That earned her no shortage of attention. There hadn't been a victor from eleven for as long as anyone could remember. But through it all, Katelyn stayed true to herself. The fame and fortune held no allure for her, it never had. She hated the Capitol with a passion, despising what they held up on pedestals. Even in the games, her focus had been on survival, not winning.

And with that hurdle overcome, she turned her attention to helping others once more. Over the course of the next year she honed her body, adorning it with the names of the fallen that she might never forget the reason she was alive was also the reason twenty-three others were not. Everything she had gone through in the games was dissected and examined, as Katelyn prepared for the inevitability of having to help a pair of unfortunate teens through the seventieth hunger games.

But she had been wrong.

The quell twist had wrecked the natural way of reaping and only a single tribute had been reaped from her home. Kirito Miristioma. Katelyn poured every iota of knowledge she had into the pacifist boy, everything she had learned about strategy, pain, and death, hoping to save him from an early grave. After he was sent to the arena, she went about getting sponsors, watching as items winged their way down to him via parachute, cringing whenever one of his allies died and looking away whenever he killed someone. But it paid off. In a moment that few had seen coming, Kirito became district eleven's second consecutive victor. Katelyn found herself cemented as a fixture of her home and held up for helping to bring her first tribute back alive.

Following that, Katelyn tried to focus on improving her damaged relationship with her parents. She had grown distant, having seen that her parents were afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing around her, treating her like she was made of glass. She didn't want that. She wasn't going to break again, never be afraid of anyone again. Enter the seventy-first hunger games, where once again, Katelyn wanted to use what she had to get a tribute home, only now, there was a one hundred percent chance that one of the tributes would die. It was then that Katelyn realized she was still afraid of something. Failure.
