Sylvania Legend
Barry's smile was so bright and sincere, Sylvania couldn't help but smile back. It felt good to smile, and to be understood, for once. Of course, she was usually the one not understanding, not other people. It felt good having someone that understood her, someone that could be... A friend?
Yes. She wanted a friend. She wanted to laugh, and be happy, even if it wasn't exactly sincere. She wanted to be herself again, the person she'd left behind when Arissa had been Reaped. She wanted to feel like the world- like the morphling- couldn't touch her. Sylvania wanted to be at last and truly free. She wouldn't let the morphling hurt her anymore. She wouldn't let it taunt her. She wanted to be normal again, and she would be. With Barry, she'd learn to be normal.
"Alright, Syl. C'mon, let's go get something to eat. On me," Barry said. Sylvania smiled at her nickname. Had she ever had one before? Surely she had, but not one she could remember. Hadn't Arissa had a name for her? What was it? Oh, yes. Silly. She'd loved the nickname. After Arissa had died, no one had called her that anymore. She had been boring Sylvania once again. But now she could grow to fit the name "Syl." She could be that person. She didn't have to be morphling-addled Sylvania anymore. She could be happy. She could be Syl.
She walked beside Barry as he led her off someplace. "Where are we going?" she asked, looping her arm around Barry's. She was barely conscious of the fact that she'd done it; it just seemed the natural thing to do between friends.
