Surprisingly, being dead wasn't all that bad- not for Zack Detroff anyway. After the madness and cruelness of the living world, the afterlife was peaceful. He had everything he desired... which mostly meant Engima. He got to talk with her all day, everyday. They would discuss their Games experiences even though they weren't exactly the happiest things in the world. However in this universe of clean whiteness, it didn't matter. The Games couldn't get to them here.
In this place, they could talk about how they died- something that was more interesting than depressing. They had died in different ways and they got to compare how much pain they had felt, what they saw right before they died etc etc. What Zack pressed for the most from Engima was who had killed her- something he had strove for in life. How many people had he asked that question to? Did you kill Enigma Lane? All had answered no, all but one ended up dead. Enigma had described her killer, but Zack just couldn't remember anyone with that description.
One day something unsettling happened, and nothing uncomfortable happens in the washed out world so it was something to take into account. The white world warped into something Zack had thought he'd never see again- something he wishes to never be in again. The Arena. He was in the Arena. Pain was piercing the side of his head, reaching up his hand brought back blood. That's right, he lost his ear in the Arena. It's like he never died. But, if he never died then Engima... Oh god.
"Enigma?!" his voice was filled with desperation and fear- something that he hadn't felt since dying. There was a backpack on his shoulder and his old machete was in his right hand and was coated in fresh blood. Zack's stomach lurched, making his eyes water as bile rose in his throat and stung the delicate flesh. All of this- it was almost completely new. After being in paradise for, god knows how long, this was too much all at once. Sweat ran down his face and quickly wiped it away.
The sky above was a cheerful blue and Zack couldn't bare to look at it. Looking around him, there was the familiar volcanic looking rocks around, but something new was inn this area. Large holes in the ground dotted the landscape and Zack made a note to stay away from them.
It's funny how quickly one can adapt to their situation, settling so fast back into Games mode was almost like slipping into a pair of shoes. Moving forward, Zack spotted someone else in this terrain with him.
"Enigma!" he shouted, starting to run towards her. They'd figure out what was going on together, and maybe figure out a way back to their perfect world- one where the Games were just a memory.
