The hovercraft ride felt like it went on for ages. The undying hum of the engine was the only thing, besides my heart beat that I could hear. The undying silence would have driven me crazy, had it not been for those two things. I tried concentrating on my heartbeat, but it was constant, or repetitive enough. The engine was barely good enough, but it sufficed. I was terrified, point blank. I'd come all this way without being even a little scared. Nervous, maybe, but not scared, and now, mere hours before the Games actually even started, I had a break down. I do not think so.
The windows blacking out was a sign that I didn't have to wait much longer, and I'd be at my possible death site. Fantastic! I thought with groan. A few more minutes, that's all I was allowed to have before absolute chaos broke lose. Just a few minutes before I had to fight. I felt the hovercraft begin to slow down and I knew it was time. We are there.I thought, with a huge lump in my throat.
The next few things that happened were a blur. The tracking device injection, even my memory of getting to my changing room was fuzzy. The sight of Oblivious was enough to make my mind wake up. Just the sight of him was enough to make me realize just how serious this was. He grabbed me up in a tight embrace before he spoke."How you holding up?" He asked with a sympathetic look in his eye. "I'll be fine" I said as he reached into his pocket. When he pulled out the one thing that might have been able to save me from these games, I actually allowed a tear to fall down my cheek. As he put on my grandmother's necklace on my neck, I wiped away all the other tears that threatened to weaken me.
He threw me my outfit after, yet another hug, and told me I needed to change pretty quickly so that I could eat, if I wanted. It wasn't fast enough, because I had hardly even got to look at them when the peacekeepers came pouring into the room. The whisked me onto the platform without even letting me say good bye to Oblivious. I put my hand against the glass as I began to ascend to the arena.
Red. That's what I saw. Red sand was everywhere. I almost forgot that I couldn't just run, and almost fell off the platform. As I looked around, I saw three gigantic towers, and more sand. The sand was just getting heavier and heavier, and time was running out. When I looked for her, I found her. Lightning was only a few plates away from me. I couldn't spot Liliana for anything though, nor could I find my fellow tribute. The site of Lightning was enough though. Why couldn't we just be partners? Why weren't we allowed to have help? It wasn't like we were cheating, or anything! Just assuring a spot in the Games.
I was expecting another ten seconds when the gong rand out. I was running as fast as I could, but it was nearly as fast as I was expecting. The sand was incredibly deep, and it was strong at all. Wading. That's more like what I was doing. Still, I was going as fast as I could. they had begun, and I wasn't going to die that day. No matter what.
