Griffin kept his eyes on her as she gazed at him,and again he silently wondered what she was thinking.Being a Career,he was good at reading people, especially other Careers. They were usually so fake, and he could see right through them.He could almost always tell what they were going to say before they said it,what they were going to do,what they were thinking.Arcadia however, was impossible. He had absolutely no clue what thoughts were running through her head, what she was going to do,what she was going to say.It was a mystery.
So when he saw the glint of tears in her eyes,he was completely surprised-and worried,he realized. His emotions were never something he was good at handling, let alone someone else's.Silently,he fought the urge to wipe her eyes off for her, because that would be stupid. Not only embarassing, but he knew Careers never liked to show weakness.Tears were an obvious sign of being weak,so god only knows what she would do if he wiped her face for her.
Then another thing-why was she crying? Was she so thankful for his offer of help that she was moved to tears? For some reason,he doubted that that was the answer to his question. What in the world was going on?
He got his answer a moment later.Almost as if asking a question,Arcadia finally spoke."Hold still?"What did she mean, hold still? It was an obvious command, but why?Cluelessly,he watched her as she quickly pressed her lips to his own, then in a lightning fast movement she had stood up and moved to another branch that was higher up.
Oh.
So that was it? Arcadia, the girl that he had seen in passing, the girl who had trained to be a Career almost as hard as he had,the girl who was probably going to be in the Games-she liked him.Obviously enough,Griffin had never seen that coming. He sat on the branch, bewildered and yet oddly happy for a moment, before he realized that this situation was completely awkward and now he had to handle it.
There was the sound of the branch swinging as he stood up and lifted himself onto the branch above him, where Arcadia sat.How was it that she looked even more surprised then he did? Her cheeks were a shade of bright red,and her eyes wide from shock.Cooly,Griffin sat down on the branch next to her, just as if absolutely nothing had happened and they were continuing their conversation. Then,of course,he didn't know what to say.Typical.
Without really thinking it through, this time he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.It was only then that he realized that this was bad, bad, bad. Not only was she probably going to be shipped off to the games, but she was seven years younger then him.Instantly,Griffin pulled away and looked at his feet, and as cooly as he could,he spoke."I'm sorry,I shoudn't have done that."
