She had to admit that it seemed like he had thought it through since earlier that day. Still, she wasn’t giving him a smile. He looked like he had put in some effort to dress not like a slob—not that it won any favors from her, but she nodded in acknowledgement. She was about to comment when he took her hand and pulled her away from the grassy area. Letting out a long sigh, she just hoped that no one she knew would recognize her. There was no way Lia was going to let them get to her, but she simply preferred being unknown wherever the hell they were going.
When she saw the place that he had taken her, her morale dropped a little. It was a pretty well-known place and a lot of the people in district 2 frequented it. If there was any place she would run into someone she knew, this would be the place for it. She raised her eyebrows when he said “beautiful girl”, a reminder of the promise not to use such inflated adjectives. He then continued on talking about how he was never given a chance, and she knew that she had made a terrible mistake in agreeing to the bet. It wasn’t that she didn’t feel bad for him—she really didn’t have time to feel bad for anyone—but she knew that he was taking this way more seriously than he needed to.
He looked so embarrassed after his thank you, Lia couldn’t help but soften up a little. She was still a bit miffed, trying to remove herself from the whole situation, but he was just as vulnerable, if not more vulnerable, than her. He resumed his usual nature, though, and whatever softening that had just happened disappeared. After they were seated, he mentioned that she could pick whatever she wanted, throwing in that he could afford it. Whoop dee doo, she thought sarcastically to herself as she looked at the menu. “I’ll just have some water,” she said, barely looking up from the menu.
Even though he said she could pick whatever she wanted, she picked the simplest dish there and handed the menu to the waiter before looking at Topher. If she was going to have to spend a meal with this boy, the least she could do was at least be engaged. “So what’s your back story, hmm? You’re a lonely boy who likes to work out in other people’s spaces?” The last part came out a little too cynically, but she wasn’t feeling amused yet. “But really, what is your story?” her tone softening a bit. She would have been lying if she said she wasn’t a little bit curious about this boy. He already mentioned the fact that he could barely stand on his own feet, but who the hell was he?
