It seems to me, that our fathers are a bit more alike then I thought. When something goes wrong, they both seem to blame us for what's happened. Like when Ashton had busted me in the mouth, and taken me down in front of everyone, he said it made him look bad. At least, his father isn't that conceded. Mine on the other hand will do just about anything to be perfect... or rather to have a perfect child. That perfect child turned out to be me for a few years until I started to change this year. Until certain events started taking place in my life and made things a little difficult to follow his ever whim.
"I'm sure it wasn't Matthew's fault." I mutter. "My brother can be a bit pig headed sometimes. He probably done that for laughs or something. Maybe for some other reason or to make him look bad in front of others. It wouldn't be the first time." I try to take up for Matthew, dropping all the blame on my brother.
Matthew claims he's fine just like I thought he would have, especially in front of his father. I take another bite of the food and it seems the burnt flavor is getting a little more intense the more I consume. It's nice, but horrid how his father is having to endure the taste. Then again, I'm sure he would have thrown it out if he was trying to be mean. Why would he try to be nice of all times. I give Matthew a quick glance as I change the subject to something a little more 'manly' and something he might indulge in instead of something more about me and Matthew.
The moment I mentioned his business, he seems to perk up a bit. It's like I hit gold and he starts to talk about his family business. I feel elated. Ecstatic almost because at least this is something that is bringing him out of his shell. Maybe, another female hasn't ever expressed interest in his own job before?
The long line of lineage for the business is told and I'm surprised. Matthew had told me some about it, but it's different when I hear it from his father. I give him my undivided attention, and nod several times as he talks. Then, his father expresses interest in my own father's job. What can I say though? He doesn't own a business. He makes it doing a normal job under a bigger boss, but he has certain privaledges to his job.
"My dad helps run the quarry right outside of town. He doesn't own it, but his friend does, so they're more like business partners. He deals with the finances and the labor requirements of the men, oversees production, that kind of thing. Keeps him busy though. Long hours." I tell him, and push the bowl away when I've taken the last bite of the stuff. I'm curious what his father will say to my dad's postion. It's a basic job. We're no where near as weathly as they would be. Is weath what this family looks for in finding someone to spend time with? Will it matter?
"Matthew, are you finished?" I ask, as I stand up to take my bowl and then reach out for his as well. His father, I'm not sure what he'll think about when I ask for his dish, so I don't unless he offers it up. I would be more than happy to take it as well.
