Does, Says, Thinks
Perhaps she had gone too far in reaching for his hand, and maybe she had gone too far in asking for his help, because he was suddenly as red as a snapper, and just about as dumb. She watched his mouth flap and he looked even more like a fish than before - it seemed he glubbed about just as often, for she was sure this wasn't the first time tonight he had done this. Suddenly the hand under hers twisted and his large fingers slid between hers so the warmth spread more fully through her hand. It trickled up her arm and into her face, and for all she wished she could fight it she was probably near as red as him. His hand tightened and gave hers a squeeze, pushing more heat into her face to her shame.
For all his sudden actions he still looked like a fish out of water, and he sounded a bit like one too. "Yeah, yeah. I'll help, if I can. I don't like seeing anyone hurt." Glub glub went the fish, bubbles rising from its mouth. She saw that moment's flicker of doubt, watching his eyes as carefully as she was, but attributed it to the fact that there might not be anything he was able to do. He wasn't her mentor, was there any way he could actually help her? Suddenly he seemed to have managed another breath and this time his jaw worked even harder, so much that she could almost see the bubbles he would have made underwater. "It's just.. how?" That was one thing neither of them seemed to be able to answer, and even her amusement at his fish-like appearance began to fade.
He continued on, suddenly a fish caught in a current, "I mean.. I have other tributes to be watching out for, I've gotta be worrying about them too, and.." The pause made her wonder if it was merely for him to take a breath, or if he had lost whatever shaky direction his words had been flowing in. "I mean, it's my responsibility, and you're technically not, and.." This time she saw how stuck he was, though she stayed silent because she had no idea what to say, finally he found some more words. "But don't get me wrong. I – I want you to survive. I want you to live. You seem.." The flush in her face wasn't as pronounced now, but it was certainly still there. I seem... what? But there was no way she could answer that, and she wasn't even sure Colgate knew either.
She saw the colour hadn't faded from his face either, and he was seemingly agitated from his word troubles - she didn't blame him, he seemed pretty flustered when she had touched him. Her gaze moved from his face then, to stare absently at his chest, and she watched it move softly in the moment of pause between his words before it rose in a large breath and he concluded. "God, I'm sorry, I'm an idiot." She could have laughed then, and she almost did too. It took a lot of effort and time to stifle the threatening eruption of giggles from her chest but she managed to calm herself, eventually. "You can close your mouth bubble boy." She fought the giggles again, clamping down on them determinedly. "I won't be insulted if you can't help." Her smile suddenly slipped into something more sombre "I just would like to think there was someone who might be waiting for me."
She realized almost instantly what that had sounded like and doubled up her statement. "I-i mean besides my brothers." Flushing again, this time with embarrassment, she tried to amend her amending statement. "That's not what I meant..." She pushed herself back against the glass and turned her head so her heated cheek was pressed against the cool glass. Wow, I'm as bad as him. With the glass lowering the temperature of her cheek she was able to clear her head a little bit. "I just don't have anyone to turn to right now." The admission felt like something huge and private, something that she wasn't supposed to say - some secret that her whole body regretted letting go. She fell silent and closed her eyes. Ripred, we just met. Hoping he would know what to do now, because she didn't, she stayed still with her eyes shut and let the stillness of the night pass over this.
It was then she noticed how she had grown accustomed to their hands being interlocked, and how the silence between them had become less awkward and more... accepting. It's so quiet. Then the hardest thought hit her;
This would probably be her last moment of peace.
