I can feel myself falling in and out of consciousness. I almost feel like I'm floating outside of my body, watching the terror of not knowing if I'm going to be okay. I feel the boys arm around me, steadying me. I can hear him ask me if I'm okay, it sounds like he's far away but I know he's right next to me because I can feel the warmth of his body, his arm wrapped tightly around me. I almost don't notice the larger, older guy run up to us until I feel him start tending to my wounds. I feel the coolness of the makeshift gauze he holds up to my face. It stings at first but a sense of relief washes over me, knowing it's over. No more fear, no more fighting, no more wolves. It's time to recover from here. No more worries. As my shoulders start to sink from relaxation, I'm proven wrong with one sentence, muttered by the older boy.
"Where's the other one? The girl?"
My heart sinks to the deepest depths of my body. The girl... I threw her before being attacked. Did she run off? Or did she get taken? Were there more wolves than we had anticipated? Is she even alive? Oh, god. Oh, god. I should've gotten her out of there right away. I should have... just... done... I find the strength to put my hands over my face, only lightly to not disturb my wound. What could I have done? If she's dead, could I have really prevented it? If she's dead... Oh, god.
"We gotta find her."
This statement comes from the boy, who is now without a leg. It's painful to watch as he struggles to bring himself up, practically throwing himself from tree to tree, calling for her. I lower my head, eyes ready to pour, wanting to go on a full out search but I just can't find the energy in me. I can't even get up. I'm glued to my spot on the ground, arms trembling, hardly holding me up. Then I hear a sob, a cry, something. It's innocent, meek, sad, lost. She's alive! The boy hobbles around, yelling for her even louder now. I lift my head to scan, with my one good eye, the tree's and bushes for any irregularities. Trying to pin point where her voice is coming from, following the echoing tones bouncing from tree to tree. I follow it until I see, from far away, maybe a hundred feet, possibly two, a shoe. A little girls shoe, sticking out from behind one of the bushes.
"THERE!"
I throw one of my arms in her direction, immediately regretting that decision as the tears in my shoulder start to bleed again. I don't want them to worry about me now though. They need to go see if the little girl is injured. She's my priority at this point.
"Go! Just go get her!"
