Ryan was practically jogging with eagerness by the time they reached the orphanage. He knew his sisters would be waiting for him and he was suddenly aware of how long he’d been out. He chatted excitedly to Flynn, not really needing any response from his father. “They’re gonna be so glad to know I found my father. They been as keen as me to find out what you’re like.”
Flynn remained almost completely silent, occasionally giving Ryan a placating little smile that never reached his cold eyes. When they arrived Flynn walked into the building as if he owned it and demanded to see the director immediately, and no he didn’t care that it was meal time for the children, he couldn’t wait. Mr Underwood arrived looking irritated at the disruption, but beckoned them both into his office nonetheless.
Ryan bounced over to the director and squeezed his arm, unable to contain his delight any more, his words tumbling out almost on top of one another, “Look, I found my father. This is him. He came to meet the girls! Where are they? They havin’ dinner? Can I get them?”
“Run along and find them, lad,” Flynn said, attempting to sound fatherly and kind. He adjusted his eyepatch as it was digging into his face uncomfortably. “I’ll sort things with Mr Underwood here.”
There was something predatory and shark like about Flynn’s smile but Ryan didn’t notice as he didn’t even hesitate. He beamed at Flynn trustingly and almost ran off towards the children’s dining room. His sisters left their meals and ran to him. Ryan hugged them tight and smiled at them, and they all seemed overjoyed to be together again. “I found my dad. He’s here right now talkin’ to Mr Underwood. S’all gonna work out. Might not be able to take us all today. I dunno if he’s got enough room at his house.”
He paused for a moment as something finally occurred to him, “S’got all these other kids though. Maybe he runs a orphanage too. If he does then he’ll probably have lots of room. I should have asked him.” He wanted nothing more than to drag them to their room and pack their few possessions into a bag right then and there, but he didn’t want to get their hopes up too soon.
