KATELYN PERSIMMON
He reacted almost immaturely, in a way she wouldn’t have expected given his age, he sounded like…well, honestly, he sounded like a kid in a candy store. But he listened to her, and he had a reply that was a bit more mature. “Oh, I do want to, but I think we can both just settle for something else.” He leaned towards her and she thought she could hear her heart thudding in her chest. Her mother had always said that first kisses for special. Meaningful. That you didn’t forget them. So it was kind of upsetting to know that her first would be part of a show.
Contrived. But his lips pressed against her cheek instead, like an ember flickering out of the fireplace and scorching her skin. Katelyn’s eyes widened. Ben must have been able to tell how uncomfortable she was with the prize for the game.
What a gentleman.
“I can do one better… when you’re ready.” He whispered. A promise. An invitation.
She almost wished she had something to fan herself with.
They got a sundae with two spoons and sat down on a bench. It was lighthearted. For a moment, she forgot that the Capitol was forcing her to do the show. At least, until she saw Tinselton lurking in the background again. So she focused on Ben and the sundae. French vanilla with caramel sauce and sprinkled with chopped almonds. She took a spoonful and offered it to him with a smile. It was almost enough to make her forget about the ceremony. But time, and Tinselton could not be ignored forever.
Once again, she had to weigh a handful of people against each other. She looked at the roses in her hands All in all, she’d been pleasantly surprised by how everyone had carried themselves during the little game. It made it that much more difficult to figure out who stayed and who left. She was inclined to believe that more than half of the remaining contestants really wanted to make a go of it. Saw something in her. Or at least wanted to. She sighed and put on a warm smile, walking towards them with the flowers.
She handed Bay a rose. Then Ben. And Evening.
Finally, she gave one to Glamour.
She really hoped she was making the right decision here. This was her chance to get some one on one time with the former gamemaker, and figure out what his play was. She turned to the redhead and motioned for her to come in for a hug. She broke the embrace after a few moments and apologized.
“You’re one of a kind Poria. But I’m not sure I’m the right one for you. But hey, there’s still plenty of other victors on the market. And a new one to be joining us in a couple days.” It was the nicest thing she could think to say. She could only hope that the games fanatic wasn’t too let down.
"It breaks my heart, all these stories,
brings me to tears all this grief;
And I feel so fucking helpless
when I can't be your relief."
