i can hear— in echoes, fragments, abridged whispers, reverberations of the chaos around us buzzing near the red-edged sockets where my two ears originally protruded from.

the silence within grows deafening and i relish in it, trying to mute the world out for now, with parson’s words of comfort in exempt.

but, a canon shatters from afar and i cannot help but winch at it, at the resonance it leaves inside the heart, the sonorous concussion of death breaking throughout the arena in strong ripples. this is how deaths sounds inside the arena – a dull boom, quickly accompanied by a clatter in the bones.

another nuisance arises in the form of a starfish, red and adhesive pores clinging onto the hand that brushed against the tides. it doesn’t harm and i am too exhausted to detach it, so i let it stay there, resting upon the back of my palm.

the salt clinging to these wounds burn and i don’t dare to look at a mirror now. the mesmerizing angel, who once wielded his charms as both a weapon and a shield, was rotting now, having replaced by an earless boy, absent of a thumb.

what a fucking fiasco,
i thought, lightheartedly.

parson’s back meets mine and i breathe in relief. at least he’s here, all unbruised bones and organs still attached to each other.

i know, i know that i have to break those strong bones and tendons to reign victorious, i know one of us have to sleep six feet underground for the other to live. but, i refuse to ponder extensively on that – just for now. for now, i would sew together the shreds and silvers of power inside me and retaliate.

feet almost stumble over the iron remnants of my armor and tide-worn rocks, but i am too addicted to life to meet my demise with a fall. no, my exit shall be grandiose, or near it. the stars will pelt upon earth and scorch everything down alongside the carcass i’ve become.

fingers wrap around the steel club and there’s a lattice of hope and desperation fixed around it as it soars. i sing a quiet plea: break its bones.

There was no stopping her when she got started.

And in this moment, all she could feel was a blinding hatred that would transcend any ill will that she had towards her father.

These mutts, abominations, were the absolute worst thing that she has every experience in her life, and that motivated her to relent into the void of aggression that she was starting to feel envelope the area.

Annie wanted so much more from life, and here she was, worried about dying right here and now, because of some fucking jellyfish creatures.

The thought sent a rage flying down her body and adrenaline had started to kick in.

She could tell that this was starting to become a gravesite, but she would be damned if she was buried here. She would be damned if anyone of her alliance—no – friends had died here.

There was no use in being sorted about details like that anymore.

Annie felt like she couldn’t breathe, but that did not stop her from trying to reach for another knife, but the sound in the distance nearly shook her femurs to the ground.

A cannon.

Something that she did not expect to happen so early, or at such an awkward time.

She looked around quickly, praying to whoever and whatever higher deity there was that none of the souls she walked this hell with had fallen.

Her eyes darted, and she made eye contact with each one of them, and slowly she could feel the pressure lift from her shoulders.

She would not be condemned like Atlas after all.

She heard the sound of a crunch snap her back into the reality that she was living in now, and she simply stepped back for a moment. ”Fuck you.” Annie could not watch her mouth anymore.

She was starting to become so angry that it was starting to become funny.

She didn’t have time to laugh though, as her comrades were in need of her assistance.

”Just three more left guys, lets do this.” Annie sang as she pulled a knife out from her sleeve, a yellow-orange one that transcended the beauty of a normal colored knife, and she decided that this was her chance to actually prove what it meant to be a career.

And so she took a deep breath, worrying about her friends in toe, and locked her eyes on the mutt that Parson had just stuck his spear into.

”Go to hell.” Annie shouted in solidarity, ready to protect the people that she cared about the most.

With Angel in front of her, and an Angel always beside her in spirit, she let that knife fly.

A blaze of fire against the ravaging wind.

Have days gone by during this never-ending fight?

Exhaustion is quickly becoming another enemy, with each block from the attacks, the strain in my shoulders from lunging the spear at the beasts is becoming so clear. There is a leak of energy inside of me, a tap not fully closed and now everything is draining from me.

How weak I really am, always cast as the strong one in the trio and after just one day in this shit hole and I am already living through the side effects. It is not a matter of if Teddy did it then I can but how did he do it? All the lectures drowned out before entering the arena, I am so clearly not the brains in the trio either.

I glance to the sky as the cannon sounds, the first one of the games. There is a drop of silence between us when it hums, even the beasts take a moment to halt the chaos. Now death haunts these lands and there will be so many more to come. There will be days where I see what triggers that sound and be the one who presses the button too.

Another tumbles by the hand of Angel, a perfect shot at its limbs and that leaves just the three behind. ”That’s great Angel, now onto the next one.” Annie is quick to follow in Angel’s steps, a flying knife so perfectly guides one to the ground.

Battered and bruised and yet four have had their life dashed from them. Once outnumbered and now we are just picking at the scraps that are left behind. Each one of my allies has a claim to a kill but I am still walking around without blood on my hands. I deserve that glory, with every hit I have avoided, it is now my time to sink this blade into the soul of the mutated beast.

”Just you wait guys, let me have one.” There is a taste for butchering these merciless beings, the thieves of Angel’s ears. ”I am going to kill one of these bastards.”

another bites the dust, its red of its blood eddying in the tides and glassy upon the spikes. a hand grasps the weapon firmly, which already feels like a steel extension of the hand: coated with crimson, unbreakable.

i shiver as the palm kisses the naked spots of iron on its clothed hilt. the kind of cold it discharges is as icy as death’s claws, ascending up the ivory of my spine, cold in the ribs, cold in the bones.

a deteriorating gaze studies the three around me and all of us are war-strewn, littered with scars— some of us more than others. a few more seconds of this violence, and it will come to the end.

i could feel death, weighting down this chest of mine, lethargy in each movement i make. each step invokes an aching inside, the broken things breaking even more, hundred fragments shattered into a thousand more.

parson's words—“that’s great angel, now onto the next one.”—bring back a scattered focus; eyes blink, violently, searching for the creatures, whose numbers we had thinned.

“we’re going to get out of this alive. all four of us.” despite the interference of ragged breaths, i establish a tone of assurance and guarantee, even though i know how fast the circumstances can be overturned. whether it is a white lie or not, depends on our bleeding luck. “i will make sure of it.”

divine being, having his first human experience. it’s agonizing, but there’s a faint beauty that comes with it.

in the face of danger and death, we open our wings and stand together, four hearts conjoined as one. our throne of victory have to be crafted frame each other’s bones, but for now, i don’t think about that.

i think about the fire raging inside our eyes, against the dying of our lights* – and that thought accompanies my spikes as they leap, a blur of obsidian.

If there was a definition of time stopping, it was here. In this fight, preserving our lives at the rate of molasses. We had no idea how long it’s been, and we have no idea how long it will be. My life felt like it held on a thread, almost like the Grim Reaper was holding my name by a single string.

I don’t like being held by strings. I can hold myself.

Drop me, bitch.

I don’t need Death, I don’t even need Life.

I need freedom, and this fight in the midst of frozen time is anything but freedom.

Carcasses scatter our footsteps, I do not avoid each dead tentacle, rather rubbing my dirt into the mutated beasts. Victory is lingering, I can taste it, but it still dangles as a tease, not quite close enough for a full bite.

High praise dances in the air as Annie and Angel take down another pair, my claim still hangs, this final beast is mine to tackle. A bodyguard without a kill, barely scratches cover me but the one I promised to protect has had his body stolen from him, the best I can do is finish the fight.

Just one more fucker to face, Hell swings her sword at it, barely leaving behind a mark. ”Step aside hell face, I’ll finish this one off.” Oh, fury grace me. If the fucker Ripred even gives a shit about me right now, if father’s drunken slurred prayers have done enough, it’ll guide this spear right through its major organs. A kiss to the heart or a wave at the brain, something to swipe this beast away before it takes a swing at one of us.

The sea comes to a halt right as her blood begins to pour in waves, and in the distance a storm has broken and the sky has returned to life — and the sun is warm, and it is kind, but Eudora does not accept its warmth. She sharpens her blades on the rocks beneath her, slick with her own decay. It is not in the nature of a glutton to go gently, to be at peace.

the last stand, red-kissed bodies glistening under a hot sun, facing a white-gowned creature who refuses death. tides wash over our shoes and smoothed rocks, white broth lapping at our wounds.

i cannot wrap my head around the ludicrous fact that this is only the second day and here we tremble, battle-strewn, freckled with abrasions and severs that would forever be constant reminder of the marine creatures.

“it’s almost over. it’s almost over. it’s almost over.” i whisper to myself, the words a desperate attempt to distract oneself from the agony across my broken form, repeated over and over like the mantra it is.

foolish angel, with a heart extinguished of heavenly flames, who don’t understand the extent to which trauma can ruin someone. i want to be anywhere except here, with the blood and an ashen sea, brimful of nightmares.

“are we going to finish this or what?”

“only one left.”

her blades are a mosaic of silver and red, slick with our blood. in the blink of exhausted eyes, they move, a graceful dance,

and drag themselves across the back of parson’s head and— i rage, hand on the spiked blunt soaring with an immediacy unlike the other swings.

Annie took a deep breath as she watched another one fall to her blade. She couldnt help but smile. She was ready, and while she was in so much pain, that could not stop her from making sure that each one of these things perished again and again.

After all, they were hurting the people that she cherished so.

So this time she grabbed another knife from her sleeve and waited to see what the damage was. When they all moved out of her way, she noticed that the last mutt looked like it could still fight. Great.

"Come on guys, focus." Annie said though her gritted teeth. After this she could have jumped into the water to wash off all of the blood that had pooled up on her body. But for now, she had a job to do.

So she took a deep breath, a knife as green as the forest around them in hand, and launched it through the air.

She did not think twice about taking a life.

Not now, and not ever.

Her life felt like the blank paper still. Her heart screamed at the paper. It was like she had some sort of vendetta against blank things. Which, she does. Nobody likes seeing a blank screen or having a blank mind.

Her mind was empty of all emotions that could exist at this very moment. It didn’t help that the blank paper felt ready to get torn.

Mind was screaming, heart was whining. Effort was running away like a sheep from a wolf. Hellion’s entire body was s h u t t i n g down. Drowning from the amount of blood spilling out. It was ready to lay down and die.

But if anyone knew Hell Mo, they’d know that Hellion would never lay down and die. They’d stand up and fight.

With the hourglass of her life quickly escaping her grip, her sword was her only life vest.
