County Fair Week One - Corn Maze

CORN MAZE

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to aimlessly wander through a maze of corn until you come out the other end? Well now is your chance! Join us for a super fun corn maze and test your skills at randomly picking a direction and doing it the quickest in order to win the grand prize and be named King/Queen/Ruler of the Corn!

This maze was created by some very dedicated people who shuffled and cut their way through last year’s corn crop in order to create an intricate pattern for you all to explore. It’s oddly crunchy to walk on and might smell a little funny, but it is beautiful in its own way. Here is a visual for your liking!

Imagine this but with corn stalks.

Each turn you take may lead you down the right path, or towards a dead end. Find your way out in a timely matter to see what waits for you at the other end. Don’t get lost! We don’t have enough staff to send out a search party.

Don’t forget! You need at least a 100 word IC post for any of your rolls to count!

The Rules

Each intersection you enter will require a dice roll to determine what direction you head in. Regardless if your answer is correct or not, you will need to roll another dice to determine how long it takes you to make it to the next crossroads. Correct turns will lead to shorter time rolls, incorrect turns will lead to longer time rolls. Once all participants have completed the maze, all time rolls will be added, and the participant with the fastest time will be declared the winner!

You glance back over your shoulder once as your turn to enter arrives, suddenly nervous despite your excitement. Seeing your mother wave brightly settles your stomach—no matter how lost you feel, she and your father and the fair staff will always know you're somewhere in the corn—and you bounce on your feet as you give her an air hug and turn back to the maze. Closing your eyes for one deep breath puts you even more at ease; the corn smells at once completely unfamiliar and just as green and alive as the temple orchard, and after a fun but long day hovering at the edge of overwhelmed from all the voices and new sights, the susurrus of leaves in the breeze is exactly what you need.

Now, you consider as you open your eyes, what is it that people say about mazes—keep your left hand on the wall? That seems too simple to be right, and you feel like there might be something about marking pathways, too, but that seems too complicated. Anyway, wouldn't marking the plants somehow also show other people your path? No, the hand idea should work. You reach out to the corn, drift your hand through the stalks to get used to the feeling, and take your first few steps.

You stop. Slowly, then faster, you tap your toes up and down without lifting your heels, shuffle forward a few feet, then sweep one foot in a long arc around you, experimenting with drawing little crackles and long sighs out of the floor of dried stem bits and leaves. For a few minutes you try to dance along with the rhythm of the sounds the living corn makes, until you simply flop down and continue patting the dried ground around you with your hands, delighted and a little awed and soothed by the gentle warmth of speckled sunlight.

First event. Phew. I wasn't an anxious person on a normal day, however, today was nerve wracking. This is an actual thing. A judged thing. It's a test on my ability to use my instincts correctly and guess which path was the right one to take or not. The goal of this event was to find my way out of the other side in the fastest time possible. There was an excitement that fluttered through the crowd and participants. It's that feeling of the unknown. We didn't know how it'd go, but we were excited for it nonetheless. It's that exciting type of unknown. The one that, compared to the unknown of the arena, was fun.

It came to my turn with the maze. I had nobody to look out into the crowd for hope, so I turned to face the maze and shifted my weight between my feet. There was no need to worry about my position in the maze because they had a search team ready. So, three breaths to center myself sent me into the corn halls. The crunch o the path beneath my feet allowed for something to fill my head. Give me something to focus my thoughts on rather than immediate panic from left or right path. The smell was nothing to be impressed by, so I didn't focus on that either. The only goal was to get to the end.

After a few seconds of pondering my choice, I picked a path and stuck with it.

Alright, so maybe I was good at guessing. I was just slow to trust that guess. This whole start of the maze was important to nail, right? It's better to not get lost early than later. Or maybe it's worse to get lost in the middle. I don't know. I think I went the right way; there's another fork in the road ahead, and it's a matter of trusting my gut once again. My gut spoke and I followed.

Cool. Another right path taken. I think I'm pretty good at this whole maze thing. Was this something they do at home? I don't remember ever seeing these in any of our corn mazes. I kept walking to the next fork in the road, and now there are three options. Hopefully, my instincts continue to prove themselves.

Shoot. Okay. Wrong path. Shake it off, Marcellus I think to myself as I turn away from the wall of corn blocking my path. I just have to hurry on up and get through this part of the maze. I've got to make up time. There's nothing saying if I win anything cool for having the fastest time. Do I get a medal? Or do I get some sort of cute pet like they were giving out at the other cross-district events? That sounds pretty fun. I think a cat would do well in 11. It'd be nice to get those damn mice out of the way.

Okay, cool. Next fork. Let's go.

Okay, well, this was a lot more tricky than I thought it was. Maybe I was incorrect with the whole "better to get lost early". Getting myself lost in the middle of this damn maze is definitely not easy. Now when I go back, I have to make sure I'm not going backward. I hope I'm not. That'd be kind of embarrassing if I did. How much time am I on right now, anyway?

That time there wasn't a wall blocking my path, so at least I'm not lost this time. I think that I'm nearing the end of the maze, which is a good thing, because the smell is starting to get to me. The crunch beneath my feet with every stomp of my feet through the maze increased in intensity as the maze gets farther. I hope this is almost over. I want food. Maybe there's some cute animals to go look at - that's something they'd have here, right? Why do it in the animal district if we can't see the animals?

Life is tough, so you figure, why not have some fun sometimes? Travelling to other districts is something that always sounded like a good time to you, and participating in events like the county fair sounded really enjoyable as well. Looking at the list of events, you weren't really sure where to start at first, but eventually settled on the corn maze. It was something you thought you could handle, and that you'd also enjoy.

The group of people participating in this particular event were mostly young people, but that didn't bother you. Who ever said that people over the age of fifty weren't allowed to have fun?

When you enter the maze, you immediately start to try to rush yourself to go faster than you normally would. You've never been the fastest person, but you want to do your best, and you know that the amount of time this takes you is an important part of it all.

The other Izars would surely be rooting for you and Katelyn, so you'll both have to try your best. You've never really been one to stand out in the family, but you wouldn't mind getting the attention once in a while for something that's not losing your children to the Hunger Games.

You come to the first intersection and make your decision on which way to go, hoping you're correct.

The first intersection seems to have pointed you in the direction you wanted to go, but you can't be entirely certain. It is a maze, after all, and you don't really know how well you're doing until you reach the end of it all.

The finale of things is often what tells you how you're doing. After you take a test and get your score, you know how well you did. After a politician runs in an election and the results of the votes come in, they know how well they did. A lot of things in life are a mystery until they're done, you realize.

That's why you will continue to try your best until you are done, just in case there's a chance you succeed. Success has always been a goal of yours, even if you've often been short of the mark. At least there are some things in life you feel you're good at, so even if you don't succeed at this, maybe there's something else you can be proud of.

You can't start doubting yourself now, though.

You seem to be going faster now, which proves that despite being a lot less active than you should be in your everyday life, you're still at least somewhat in shape, as you're carrying yourself on your feet pretty sufficiently.

You're proud of yourself, which is a rarity. You can't see over the corn in the maze, but you still make your way around corners without miss-stepping, at least so far. You don't want to jinx yourself, though, so you don't say anything aloud. You can't hear much more than the crunch of grass and fallen leaves underneath your feet as you make your way through the maze.

That's a sound you've always loved. You've always loved the fall, too. It's your favorite time of year, mostly because it allows for things like this. You were excited for what would come of this race, but more importantly, you were enjoying yourself already. Being in nature- even if the maze was technically constructed by people- was your favorite thing that you ever got the chance to do, aside from maybe teaching your students.

Starting to feel like you made a wrong turn makes you a bit anxious and slows you down quite a bit. You're determined to pick the pace back up, though. Perhaps your legs are getting tired, but you try to distract yourself from that thought. You don't want to think you're getting tired and then actually cause yourself to get worse in that regard.

So, you keep moving. You have a small smile upon your face. You're having fun, and you're not too concerned about winning, no matter how nice it would be. You can imagine the smile on Vasco's face if you were to win this event. Surely he'd be proud of you. Only time would tell if that were to actually happen though.

You meet another intersection, and decide which way to go on instinct. You don't think about your decision, just like you hadn't with any others. You just go.

Quinn somehow got me to agree to do the corn maze with her, no clue how that happened. But now that we were here, there wasn't any time to be a gentleman. I was here to win, not to make friends. Plus Quinn was already my friend so it wasn't like I had to worry about making friends with her anyway. I needed a strategy.

The strategy I came up with had two main points. The first was to be fast. Which, with how quickly I outran those chickens earlier I feel like I'm good. The second part, is to be lucky. That made me feel less certain. I have never been super lucky. For starters, I was born with a curse that makes chicken hate me, how lucky is that? If all else failed, I could just trip someone else. Bit of a dick move, but Sammy calls me a dick half the time anyway.

"Hey Quinn? Think I can beat ya?"

Instead of waiting for a response. I took off and started through the maze, pushing past the first girl who entered (Ezra). It was Quinns own fault if she couldn't keep up. Though, I knew that she could. Whenever we hung out, no matter what we were doing, she could always keep up. When we wrestled? It was 50/50 who would win. When we had mud fights after storms? She would dodge mud balls left and right. She was pretty amazing.

Azar Rhodes

Not once in his life did Azar imagine he would ever leave his home in District Eleven, but here he is roaming through the fair set up in District Ten. One thing that caught his eye was the giant corn maze scattered throughout the area. He draws closer to it looking at the corn from the outside before deciding to sign up for it. Anything to help his family, not that much is needed, but Azar and his father prefer to live the life Kyrian once knew without asking Harbinger for help.

He stands at the entrance of the maze carefully deciding which way to go. Sometimes the simple mistakes can cost someone, but all he can do is give his best, and hope this goes his way.

He starts off, and of course he runs into a dead end, muttering to himself, Azar turns around as quickly as he can. Mazes are difficult, and he knows this. He can't give up. He has to keep trying.

Of course he goes the wrong way again, and for a moment he hangs his head, but he can't let that stop him from doing the best he can. Azar still has a chance. He's still in this, and right now he just wants to make the best of it.

He moved a little slower this time, but he managed to not find a dead end, and it makes him jump for joy. Moving slower is more important because it allows for more accuracy. Maybe he continue with this, but it's hard not getting into a hurry once he's got his groove going.

He's on a roll! Azar jumps for joy, and by moving slowly, he keeps doing exactly what needs to be done. Of course, he doesn't think he stands a chance when it comes to being in first place, but right now he wants to finish. He wants to find the end while he can before his luck runs out.

Another dead end! Azar sighs, and right now all he can think of is finding the exit and escaping this madness. It's impossible to see over the corn, but he has to be getting close, right? He takes a deep breath and composes himself for only a moment before continuing. Hopefully something good comes of this.

Azar breathes a sigh of relief as he finds the exit. He went slower than he wanted to, but he did the best he could, and that's all he can ask for.

District Ten is amazing, and I just want to run from every corner to explore, but dad told me to be on my very best behavior while we're here. It's not very often I get the chance to cross the district borders, and now I have the chance, and I signed up for everything I possibly could. I just want to have fun, and maybe I can show my dad that I'm smart, and that all my years of wrecking havoc with Vera is worth it. The first event I'm attending is the corn maze. I've never seen nothing like it, and I stand in awe of it. They clearly worked very hard on this, and I have to be completely respectful of it. I even love the smell of it, and the crunching of it beneath my feet as I slowly move around. All I want is to make my parents proud of me, and show my dad that one day I can be just like him. With that, I start into the maze trusting my gut to lead me through like it's done so many times before

Ellen Shirley had no idea how she found herself herded into the corn maze. She hadn't intended to enter the maze, her sense of direction was terrible at the best of times! In a new district she was already finding it hard to find her bearings, and now tall stalks of corn surrounded her and she was lost. Utterly and helplessly lost.

Sighing, her glances around her the crowd of people that had initially entered had thinned out, a glance here and there was all that was offered as she took a tentative step deeper into the maze. If Mathew had been here, he would have laughed at the distressed expression that pulled back her lips, "relax, love, it's all fun and games," he would murmur, brushing a kiss across her forehead before interlacing her fingers with his leading the way.

But Mathew had changed since the loss of Arabella, and instead of throwing himself into this new adventure, he was still back home in Eleven, wallowing in a sadness that Ellen didn't know how to relieve.

She would have to have fun for the both of them.

Nodding determinedly she takes off towards the first intersection, Arabella would want her to have fun. So fun she would have.

You're speeding up again, and it's clear that your speed is just constantly changing. You've never really been one to keep a steady pace, though, and that goes for in life in general, too. When you started out at the company you were working at before becoming a teacher, you worked harder than any other employee there.

After a while of working there, you started to slow down. It was like things were just going downhill, despite them not getting any more difficult for you. So, you left that job and became a school teacher, which you now put your heart and soul into, working as hard and efficiently as you can. You just hope that that doesn't start to go downhill, too. You're loving the work that you do now.

Continuing through the maze, you hope that you're close to the end of it all. You're starting to feel like it's never ending. You reach another intersection, and you make a quick choice.

Surely you had to be almost there, right? You split second decision at the last intersection made you second-guess your directional abilities. Perhaps you weren't doing as well as you thought you were. Well, only time would tell.

You hear other voices, as if you're getting closer to the end of the maze and you can hear people on the other side. One last turn, and you should be there, surely. There's no way it could take that much longer, right? You realize that your thoughts are just cycling through, getting more and more repetitive. You just want to get out of this maze so that you can think clearly again.

Alright, so dragging her best friend along to this event wasn't without a little bit of signing-him-up-on-her-behalf, but it's the peak of summer and the first time they've had more than a half-dozen people visit District Ten since, well, ever. This was Quinn's moment! And what better way to showcase Ten's finest than with Little Miss Emberstatt herself and her bestest friend Alex Pepperwood?

Plus, she was trying to distract him from the whole 'Sorry your brother's dead and that my parents couldn't get him home' elephant in the room.

She'd been training her family for the relay for weeks now, dragging Pop, Jasper and Enzo by the ears. Every day she got a little taller, fourteen years looming closer and closer with every sunrise, and every day she reminded the men in her family that she meant business. If they were to lose at their finest hour Quinn would never live it down. It wasn't even about the prizes - what's extra food to Ten's royal family? - it was, as usual, about Quinn and her pride. Once she had her eyes set on something there was nothing Quinn couldn't - or wouldn't - do.

And Alex Pepperwood knows this, challenging her to a race against the two of them. Her eyes sparkle at the sound of competition - "You're on, Pepperwood!" - and her lips snarl into a wicked grin.

"On your marks," a caller hollers into the afternoon air, "get set- hey! Miss Embersta-!"

but she's already off, turning around a corner at lightening speed with nothing but victory on her mind.

Okay, okay, hear her out - this was NOT the same as the haybale maze Quinn had set up in her backyard to practice in. Yes, she was lost. No, she wasn't about to admit it. Never mind all the others who had found their way through, all Quinn had to do was beat Alex.

Who cares if he grew up country and she was born & raised in the Victor's Village? She had country in her. Deeply-buried, but it was in there. Her Mom & Dad hadn't stopped reminding her since the day she was born, desperate to pull her back down to earth with some perspective. Perhaps a corn maze would be the thing to topple Quinn Emberstatt's ego, all but shy of fourteen years old and at this rate, about to come dead-last in the maze she was so sure she'd conquer.

Another dead end, a ticking time bomb in her heart. "Aw fuck!" she shouted in frustration, hoping her Momma was nowhere near the corn maze.
