I like to remind Yani that it’s the little things that make life so special – much like the little Donkey that has now graced the auction stand. We're lucky enough to have some money from my salary to bid, and a little from Emma’s too, now that she’s a magistrate for the court. Not quite enough to feel comfortable bidding on all the horses, seeing as we had a perfectly good one of our own back in eleven, but we did need another hand around the farm. And I could admit too that I’d been wanting a donkey for some time now.

Call it nostalgia for childhood.

Gero had one sweet and gentle creature on his farm back when I was a boy. We called him Calaca because of how skinny he used to be. He would trudge around his little patch of land with his sad little face and floppy ears and let us pet him whenever we wanted. He felt like one of the family, all those years just wandering idly in his old age not causing much fuss. When he’d gone we’d had a little funeral for him, too. The headstone is out by the river, though I can’t remember the last time any of us ever paid a visit.

“Here, I’ll bid!” I say at last, raising a hand. We’d have to fix up the stable and it’d mean a bit more work at home, but all that wouldn’t matter now.

You have always been a supported of your family: a very strong supporter. You do whatever you can to help them out and make them happy, even if it's just the little things. So, when Vasco decided that he was going to bid on the donkey at the horse auction (you realized then that it wasn't just going to be horses), you decided to give him a hand with it and add to what he was bidding.

What was the harm in helping out family? In your eyes, absolutely nothing. There were people in your life you'd wished you could've helped more, but were stuck helpless, so even just a little action like this could start to turn things in the right direction, even if it wasn't something nearly important as other things that came up in your life. It was still important to you.

CONGRATULATIONS TO VASCO AND LORDES IZAR FOR WINNING LOT FIVE - THE DONKEY JACK

Morgan knew that she could never rely on her brother and his friends to run the show in the stables. Already they messed up the catalogue with the donkey and now the shire horse has been sold privately! Well, it’s a good job the Halfingers are not short of horses to sell. There is a nice older draft horse with a few more years of work left in her that will be a piece of gold for anyone with land that is stood around the ring.

The giant is the biggest lot of the day, one leg is probably three times thicker than the thoroughbred of lot two. Its feet are like dinner plates, Morgan tries her best to avoid the mare’s hooves as the beast will surely crush her toes if it stands on her. The auctioneer starts calling out the numbers for the last lot of the day, Morgan can’t wait to count the cash once this is all done.

I don’t need a horse --

-- probably would fall straight off if I even tried to ride one.

The smart thing to do would be to stand still, quietly watch the auction take place, not draw any attention to myself. Better still, walk away altogether and not tempt fate.

I might be from around here but I don’t know the first thing about animals. I don’t know what the heck I’m supposed to even do with a horse. I know they need large fields to live within, and while I’m sure Julia Orchards is big enough to suffice, I’m not sure how the groundskeepers would feel about a mare chewing through the green grass they’ve spent years manicuring.

But I feel myself raising my hand on my own accord, and suppose, there’s no better time than the present to learn about the intricacies of being a horse owner.
