Is it just your imagination, or does the shining golden horn seem even bigger this year? Towering far above the heads of the young tributes, the 65th quell Cornucopia is indeed nearly double the size of its predecessors. But the Gamemakers have not packed it with any more of a bounty; in fact, the plethora of space left over makes the wealth of vital survival supplies seem devastatingly small. One thing’s for certain: tributes will in no way be able to scale the walls and make it to the top of the horn this year.

Surrounding the Cornucopia is a labyrinth of ten foot tall hedges, forming a maze impossible to navigate. Trying to predict the location of an exit is futile; the only way to get through the maze is to wander until you stumble upon a way out, but in the process, you may also stumble upon some of the bloodthirsty, dangerous creatures that call this place their home.

Redwoods are well-known as the tallest species of tree, but it appears that these particular redwoods that have been genetically altered to reach even higher. Easily clearing heights of nearly two hundred feet, these trees cast long shadows on the ground below, creating a large, spooky forest feel. Despite their ominous presence and height, however, these trees are certainly excellent sources of firewood; that is, if the smaller-than-usual tributes are able to reach high enough to break off a branch or two.

The orchard would be a lovely and welcoming escape from the chilling redwood forest… if it did not boast sprawling trees bearing apples the size of your head. Though quite picturesque from a distance, one of these falling on your head could do some serious damage. Nevertheless, they are certainly good enough to eat; picking them simply requires a great deal of care. Some already seem to have bites taken out of them...

It is not your eyes deceiving you; there really is a massive ice cube sitting in the southern end of the arena. It seems impossible for such a thing to stay frozen in the moderate temperatures of this year’s dome, but nevertheless, it does. Be wary as you approach, as the ground tends to be slippery around the cube, and you don’t want to find this out the hard way. What a way to die, huh?

Scarier than the nest itself is the idea of what kind of monstrous beast may have constructed it. Twenty feet in diameter, this nest sits not far from the giant ice cube, though it is certainly far more imposing. It is made out of what looks like small saplings perfectly woven together, so perfectly that it’s clear whatever made is much more intelligent than you’d think. Nestled inside the nest are three obsidian black eggs, each the size of a large house cat; you shudder to think what would happen if you disturbed one.

Fi-fi-fo-fum… Even in Panem, the story of Jack and the Beanstalk is a bedtime classic; rather than scare you, however, you reveled in the thrills, nestled safe in your bed and knowing it could not possibly be real. But the towering beanstalk to the east of the hedge maze proves it may be a whole lot realer than you bargained for. It would be fairly easy to climb, but who knows what awaits you at the top? Hopefully nothing planning to grind your bones to make your bread. But this is the Hunger Games, and nothing is guaranteed.

To the north of the arena a cluster of mountains stand tall and proud, serving as a natural barrier for whatever lies beyond. The tops of the mountains reach high enough to be covered with snow, and white powder cascades down their slopes. They are actually quite beautiful; however, you know full well that in the Games, beauty is usually synonymous with danger. There’s no telling what perils the mountains might hold.

Tributes reside here in luxury for a week before the Games begin.
