"ain't it like
thunder under earth,
the sound it makes."
In the end, it's gentle. Eden falls onto the girl from Two, sword in a fist, and she catches him with her glaive. His chest cradles it. Holds it like a babe.
It's a little like a marionette having it's strings cut. It's sudden, and it's silent, and it's a little sad. The mat is warm, and his arm is across her ankle, and the buzzer doesn't actually go off until she's disentangled herself from him.
The pain is different than when he broke his arm. It's different than yesterday. His vision doesn't swim with it, it just festers in that one spot and makes his breath hitch. It's not a quick panic that enters him but a slow one, something languid seeping into his lungs and making it harder and harder to breathe.
It's just an
oh
this was bound to happen eventually.
Eden tries to get to an elbow, to prop himself up, but the ground is too slippery now. His fingers are numb, like he's out standing at that balcony again. He looks down at the five fingers he has splayed out on the mat, all red and covered in stars. Five like the girl that'd given him that paperback and five like the number of times he's managed to tell Echo that he loves her and five like the number of minutes he'd once traded with Avriel Baptiste.
Eden tucks one of the fingers into his fist, and it feels right. It sits there, gentle on the ground, and maybe that's why Eurydice sent him to Four over everyone else.
He'd thought the medics would've been there by now.
