My training might as well had a big "COPYRIGHT: TEDDY URSA 76TH" stamp on it at this point.
I had mainly been strategising with him, doing a lot of the actual training on my own. But it didn't help that even when I wasn't trying to copy Teddy, I was still copying Teddy. Ever since I was a kid I was a Teddy Ursa fan. So from watching reruns of some of his fights, especially his fight against Emberly, his techniques with a spear were ingrained in me at this point.
I thought about that fight a lot. Teddy saying he didn't want to do this. Him remembering the dead. Teddy trying to find himself, searching for himself. He seemed so lost, so scared. Normally when I see him, I don't see that scared kid. I see a confident man, a man who knows himself. That's what I saw when I first met him, when I told him about my date with Sabrina, when I told him about the consequences of that date, and even when I asked for advice about getting into the college.
The only time I saw that kid in Teddy was on the train, he still seemed lost.
But as I did yet another Teddy move, I realised something. I was looking for some sort of gimmick. Something to make me memorable and stand out. A lot of the people who did well had something. The Le Roux's were lions. Flynn was the sharpshooter. Teddy was a sweetheart. Nixie was the underdog out of the careers. And I could try to be a mini Teddy Ursa, Teddy's protégé, something related to Teddy like that. It wasn't exactly a secret that him and I were close prior to the reaping. And I was planning to use a spear regardless, it was just a coincidence he also had one.
That's when I decided to be Teddy Ursa but with flair. I had a history in gymnastics. I figured it would help with dodging and also just look cooler to do some cool tricks with the spear, maybe a flip or two. And I guess my strategy for my gimmick worked. After one particularly cool-looking attack, a trainer who must've been watching me spoke up.
"Not bad, Little Teddy."
I didn't even notice him there prior, which is surprising because this guy definitely looked attention grabbing. How many piercings did he have? Not that I had issues with lots of piercing, he just had a lot. Like a metric shit ton. I knew he probably saw me with Teddy prior. The first day here I practically followed him around like a lost puppy. I felt like a lost puppy. I missed my family the most that day, and he was the closest thing I had to family here. He might as well of been family.
"Peter actually, Teddy is about twice my age with brown hair. But it's an easy mix-up."
I laughed to try to show I was joking, and then I nervously started hoping he thought I was funny. This didn't seem like the type of guy I wanted on my bad side.
