How can something be so beautiful, but so deadly all at once?

The sound of aircrafts in the distance, an explosion that echoes from miles away. Only moments pass and then an even louder blast echoes through the open plains. Ears ringing, people wailing, the inferno spreading rapidly. In the distance the smoke begins to rise. Blackness billows upwards, threatening to engulf us all.

The end is near.

I can feel it coming.

An assortment of reds and orange hues painting pictures throughout the sky. Lions made of flames threaten to engulf the lambs. Father barks out commands, Ludwig yips as he tries to corral the sheep, and Ma runs towards us to usher us towards the house before rushing back into the pastures to try and help Pa.

Our world has been set ablaze.

The District called them crazy. Told them that there was no place for livestock in District Ten. They refused to listen and persevered, convinced that one day their oilless field would take off. They would tell us stories of how someday everyone would be lined up around the block to sing their praises.

But now, they would be singing their sorrows.

We stand on the porch, my arms wrapped tightly around Georgie. A final cry for help and I cover his eyes with my hands because in a forest at least there’s trees to hide behind.

In an open field, you are forced to watch it all.

They managed to save the sheep and the pasture, and somehow Grandma managed to save us. Though every night, pictures of firestorms paint my dreams. Sweat drips down my forehead and fear blazes through me, but I am mesmerized. I am intrigued.

Maybe there is beauty in the flames.

Maybe there is beauty in death.
