[SF Event] Potato Gun

Potato Gun

Each participant was given a week to build their own potato gun using whatever pieces of scrap and other parts they were able to find in the closet. When it's time, contestants will step into the shooting area, and they'll be given three tries to fire their gun. The furthest distance is the final score for that competitor. Good luck.

The Rules
- Each competitor has a week to build their gun and test fire it
- Competitors will be judged based on performance of their gun as well as the distance in which the potato flies.
- Distance is measured in yards.
- Roll the dice for distance 3 times.
- Posts in this thread must be a minimum of 100 words long.
- You have until 23:59 PST 2nd September to participate.

CANTARA

She had a vision for her potato gun: a bold, sleek design, spray painted camo, sure to induce dread in her competitors. The design, in her opinion, was flawless. She'd sketched, hardened the lines, graphed it. She spent her woodshop time cutting and polishing every piece. But when it call came together, green and black speckled paint and all, it looked a little haphazard. As though a toddler had thrown it together.

By the time it was her turn, she'd realized the error in her craft. She'd allowed for some tolerance between potatoes, but not the variety which were present at the fair. Still, she marched bravely to the starting line. She selected the three most similar potatoes. The first one sailed up and down with a thud, landing not so far from her feet.

With her lips set in a thin line she fired off the next two. Neither went further than halfway. She lowered her weapon, mumbled something about wind speed, and stalked away.

FLYNN GARNER

It wasn’t my idea to sign up for this event but trying to escape PR at a Capitol hosted fair in my own District is just impossible. The dirt on Quinn’s grave is fresh and already the parade has come trouncing into town. At least it is something I can try and seem interested in, there are other events that I am definitely going to be a little competitive in…but this gun one? Really?

They just want one picture, one picture to assess against the same shot nearly five years ago. Just so they can compare everything. Compare how much older I have gotten. Compare how shit of a sharpshooter I have become. Much to their dismay, I have not been practicing. I have not even practiced with the gun I made six hours ago, out of some lead pipe, a few coil springs, and other bits of scrap I picked up while walking to the convention hall from the victor’s village.

I have just got to do this for one shot. One camera snap and then I am free to actually try and enjoy myself this week.

I load up the gun with the deformed looking, likely on the edge of beginning to rot potato. I am on the edge of being eighteen, they won’t give a shit about me after next year. I will be left to finish my medical degree. They just want one picture then I will be left to just be me.

Evan had built a lot of weird crap over the years, but surprisingly, he had yet to craft a potato gun. He'd made a marshmallow launcher before, though, so that had to be at least somewhat similar, right? It definitely couldn't be too hard off. Definitely. He'd have this in the bag. It wouldn't be difficult at all, right?

The young man, when presented with his options for supplies, immediately had an idea. The main part of his potato gun would be a rather wide-in-diameter piece of PVC pipe. That's where the potato would launch out of. So, seeing exactly what he needed to build this, he gathered that, as well as the other supplies he would need, such as, of course, duct tape. Who could go without duct tape? It was definitely the thing he'd found most important when improvising his stuff he'd built at home. He built random things all the time, improvising without instructions, and usually they turned out pretty well. This shouldn't be much different.

When his potato gun was finished being assembled, he used a permanent marker to doodle a little smiley face on the side of the barrel and sign his name. Then, he got everything ready for the final testing.

Was it a little petty to sign up for an event that Flynn did, just to prove a point? Probably. Despite the pettiness of her own actions, she had been excited to prove herself. After all the changes and with Quinn's death still heavy in her mind, she's a bit angry with everything. Not because of Flynn, but because of the world around their family. There's a fire in her soul that shouldn't be there. Growing up to a world that's punished kids like her brother for doing what they must to survive. The taste is frustratingly bitter. A burning fire on her tongue as she wanted to scream at the screens presented in the square showing Quinn's death on loop.

Isn't it enough to lose another Garner? Isn't it enough to watch her own brother change before her very eyes? The world's a cruel place. She's learned this fact too young for a girl like herself. Part of her didn't understand it all, but another part of her could empathize with her brother. That'd be enough. Except, her form of sibling love and bonding wasn't quite the same as others. Sure, she could be nicer if she wanted to, but that's not how they work. Instead, she's going to kick his ass with her own version of the gun she'd seen him make only six hours before.

Despite what the Capitol may want to think, Flynn's not the only one with a good shot. She's sent rubber bands flying at pretty girls who couldn't keep their lips shut. A smile on her lips as she steps forward for her own test. The gun made entirely out of some glittery PCV pipe, duct tape, and rubber bands of course. The design was simple enough, but the true shine was the artistic work she did on the side. FLYNN GARNER IS LAME! is painted on the side in the most atrocious glittery mess she could make. An edge of a teasing smile on her lips as she's called forward to show her work.
