The fight at the lake with all of the remaining tributes was the closest you'd come to death since being in the arena, and in all honesty, it scared you. You were truly afraid now that you wouldn't make it out alive. You feared the next day in the arena, worried that it very well may be your last. You'd been through a lot since being here, but you weren't sure what else was in store.
Would you become a killer, or would you simply die first?
Deep breaths, Anika, you told yourself. You'd made it out of the fight alive, even if you didn't expect to. Now, you just had to stay alive. You had to stay alive for Rafe and for Rohan. Especially for Rohan. Rafe had been through traumatic things. He'd seen a lot. He'd survive okay if you didn't make it home. Rohan, however, was so young, that you had a feeling that it might stick with him a bit too much if you died a brutal death in here.
You weren't ready for him to have to see that. You were sure that there was fear running through all of your loved ones back home. They all wanted you to win, of course. Everyone had to have the confidence in you, too, surely. They all knew that you knew what you were doing: you knew how to survive. You'd studied all this beforehand, right? Surely you knew what you were doing.
Abha had to be shaking with nerves watching that fight, though. You'd made her promise to take care of Rafe and Rohan. She was probably afraid that that promise was going to be a permanent one.
You had to assure yourself it wouldn't be.
Why were you getting nervous now? You were Anika, for crying out loud. The District knew you so well that they didn't even have to announce your last name when you strode onto the stage so gracefully in the District Square on reaping day.
You were meant to wear a crown, and not just the flower crown you kept having to straighten upon your head. You were meant to be the victor, and you'd be damned if you weren't going to try as hard as you possibly could to achieve what you deserved.
