Today is one of her good days — so she perches beside her older sister, Sybil, and admits a small, albeit cruel truth. Her rage doesn't go any deeper than the ache that still blooms across her split knuckles, obscured by the gloves that have become her sanctuary and tether following the development of recent... hobbies.

Beneath satin, none of the ugly parts of her coping process have to be visible. Her fury can be as peaceful as stating, I am hurt, and answering promptly, I know you are hurting, too. All of the Mars family, one singular exposed nerve in the same wound, have lost something. Some evenings, she imagines the astronomy tower burning like a matchstick in the night, and some mornings she thinks of the way she felt so suffocated during the quarantine.

She was — is reckless, and she is aware that her headstrong personality can sometimes be a thorn in her sister's palm. Looking at Syb now, breathing in calmly, she reminds herself that there is no battle to be won here, nor any crime to be trialed. You have hurt, now the scar has closed, and I have hurt you. There are many moments when she thinks of a fond dream, a complete family, that she will never be able to call her own.

The glass shards are the legacy.

"But where's the fun in letting you get what you want?" Her smirk is something like daybreak; a little brilliant and a little fleeting. But warm, always warm.
