Jorogumo

She was half-woman, half-spider, and completely hungry. She wanted her prey. She wanted to wrap them in her silk webs and seep her poison into their veins.

As she sees potential prey, she slowly makes her way toward them. There are two humans, near each other but seemingly not together. She wonders if they've noticed one another yet. It'd be even better if they hadn't: all that much more surprise.

She strikes them each in turn.

Jorogumo

Her prey seemingly deems it best to team up on her. They raise their weapons after her pincers connect with them, seeping poison into their veins. Both of them seem rather displeased to see her. Although, that's not uncommon of those she approaches, as they are usually meant to be food.

She cackles in a strange laugh, muffled yet still quite vicious-sounding. The closest she can get to a grin on her human-spider face forms. The first of the two tributes strikes her back, but she blocks the feeble attempts of the second tribute. She circles them, watching their moves closely before she strikes again. She really wants this meal, and she won't let it go all that easily.

She moves quickly, and her pincers aim to meet their targets.

It's flesh squelches around the tip of the spear, your weapon feeling almost weightless as it buries itself within the creature.

You exhale.

The bated breath you held in your lungs as you blindly struck out flees from your lips. It was the first of many times you'd draw blood here, and a part of you was afraid of that. You knew what it meant when you volunteered, that you'd have to hold steel within your slight hands, that you'd have to kill to see the light again. But, at that moment, you thought all of that was worth an escape from Twelve, at a chance to scrub your bloodless hands clean.

It doesn't make it any easier on you, though. A crooked, shadowed hand still squeezes on your heart, holding your life in its depraved grasp. You're afraid of it getting the best of you, of Arwen getting the last laugh, seeing your cold and lifeless body on a metal table. But you're also afraid of becoming more like him. You know you're nothing like he is, deep down you know that, but a tiny voice in the back of your mind was born the second you saw him take a life, doubt trickling down the ridges of your spine.

You shake away the thoughts, slowly opening your eyes after you've pulled the spear out from the creature's back. Your stomach twists into a knot at the squish of the flesh, it's all too loud in your ears. The shadow of the boy speaks, his face now clear in the dancing sunlight, "Want to postpone killing each other for a bit?"

You quickly rake your eyes over him, sandy-blonde and shocking blue eyes, he seemed trustworthy enough. But you believe that of everyone, don't you?

(Haven't you learned your lesson from pouring your heart and hope into a boy with rotted insides?)

You nod.

"Can we just not do that all?" You ask in a light tone, your voice like the wind. It's better to keep the peace, you think. And it's not like you know anything else. Violence was not your nature, hurting something, or someone, was foreign. You hope it'll die quietly, without much more effort, and tell yourself that it's mercy.

You're going to have to get used to telling yourself that.

When the beast attacks, he's more prepared than last time and the spider's teeth graze his arm. He winces, pain shooting through his wounded leg. He could already see where the creature's bite had left some form of poison seeping into his system.

The rain from the storm and the spider's bite are launching a forked attack on his nervous system. The howling wind sends shivers down his spine where they meet toxic pain in an unholy conspiracy against Niko's life.

"Can we just not do that all?"

He pauses, hearing the girl's quiet voice. When the mutt turns to face them again, he studies her for a moment. It was the girl from twelve. He remembers commenting with Itzal that she was pretty cute during the reaping recap. All he truly knows about her, though, is her insanity. She has the same one that grips Dory and Itzal and so many others this year. A volunteer.

Niko withholds a grimace at the thought. There were so many lucky tributes this year who had someone replace them, someone who showed they cared in a grand display. But when he had tripped onto the podium, there was silence. He didn't have a choice when he was ripped from his sister and friends.

It was unfair.

Especially because she didn't want to fight. Why was she here if not to mimic the careers' vomit-inducing television heroism?

He didn't want to fight.

Before he has much time to ponder his thoughts, the monster swings its pincers towards him.

"Not doing that at all sounds like a great plan" Niko says, stumbling a bit as the poison sends another wave of pain and nausea ricocheting through his body.

He watches the girl take another chunk of flesh from the beast. "Nice swing," he continues. She's a volunteer and can actually face the challenges the gamemakers through at them, it's not fair. With a sinking feeling, Niko realizes that, despite her words, if she wanted to do him in, she would at least make it quick.

Why couldn't Itzal have volunteered for Niko instead.

"Do you fight crazy spiders all the time or is it just a natural talent?" he asks as he stares down the creature in front of him. He keeps his teeth clenched tight while he tries to keep his breathing steady. He can't show weakness in front of her. Proclamations of peace are all well and good while there's a common enemy.

Jorogumo

The humans are striking her, the second one finally learning how to make real contact like his companion. He calls her a 'crazy spider' too, and her hissing laughter erupts again. This is fun.

Even if this whole encounter kills her, she will have maimed the tributes quite well, and her poison is flowing in their veins: they won't soon forget her. She's making sure of that. Ruby Racnoss had always had a love for spidery things, so placing the Jorogumo here with these tributes was no surprise. It was a nice fit, if you asked the Jorogumo.

These tributes looked delicious.

He had never liked spiders much. It was always something he was teased about. Niko could jump into an oil rig and make repairs, make some money off of drug deals, and survive the detention center, but spiders were always what did him in. As he stares up at the creature before him, he silently curses everyone who thought spiders are cute.

PSA: Spiders are dicks and they'd eat you if they could.

His breath is labored as he paces around the creature. Each pained heart beat sends wave after wave of poison flowing through his body. The world swims in front of him and it begins to take on new colors. The monster's body flashes from red to green to blue while the stormy sky begins to shimmer in phosphorescent pink.

The gamemakers must have spiked their mutt.

On another day, back in his life before the arena, he might have enjoyed whatever drug was laced into the poison. Now, however, it sends new fears through him. There was nothing in his bag to fight whatever poison was about to kill him.

He stumbles, almost swinging the sword into himself as he tries to right his vision.

She hisses while she stares down at him. It's an evil laugh coming from an all-too-intelligent creature. It's reveling in their deaths.

In the distance, he hears a cannon and tries to see if it's his companion or not. Through his blurry vision, which was increasingly speckled with multicolored polka dots, he could see her still standing. They weren't dead yet.

Maybe the mystery tribute's death would satiate the maniacal gamemakers and the girl from twelve and the boy from five would be spared.

No, Niko does not have that kind of luck.

The hissing grows louder while the creature prepares for it's lunch. Paralyzed by fear and pain's diabolical partnership, the boy does not see the danger until it's too late.

The creature pounces, drawing blood from face and he falls backward, just catching himself before he stumbles into his partner-in-death.

Gritting his teeth and steeling his body, he stumbles forward with the sword. The world before him is an ocean of colors and the spider is merely a dot in what increasingly appears to be terrible contemporary art.

"Just die already, you arachnidickbag," he grunts out, swinging his weapon with nothing but his fading strength and a silent prayer to whoever might be listening.
