He left Haze and Brennan in the lee of the fall temple. "There's something I've got to take care of," he'd murmured to Hazeia. "Security stuff, you know. Like usual." Except it wasn't routine, not tonight. Whatever peace they'd found in the arena had been irreovocably shattered when Ama fell. And he knew that now they were in the mid-Games and that would change everything.
He ran his hand down Brennana's arm, squeezed his hand. "I won't be long," he promised.
Pierce turned his back on his two remaining allies to keep them from seeing the tears that gathered at the corners of his eyes. He walked resolutely away, determined to keep them alive another night. He longed for a cloak or a hood, something to help him blend into the Ruins' shadows. Without the violent storm he had very little camoflage. Not that he expected to sneak up on her; quite the contrary. It might be best for her to know he was coming.
His path took him around the place where two people had been murdered. He'd seen dead bodies before; an annual trip to the morgue was standard procedure at his Career training facility. And even though he'd been taught that it would be different in the arena, that it would evoke emotion, he still found himself surprised by the tears that trickled down his face.
On the windward side of the crumbling ruins, Pierce settled atop a stone at the mountain's edge. The fall would kill him and it would be painful. More painful than a death by cuts or infection? The leg that Elm had crushed felt bad. Really bad. Carefully he laid out his medical supplies while he waited.
He was almost done when Svet found him. Pierce was tying off the thread holding his chest closed. His tears had dried but their tracks remained. "I'm ready," he said by way of greeting. He told himself that distracting Svet was the best protection he could offer Brennan and Hazeia, but that wasn't exactly true. There was something else, something she'd promised many days ago. "I'm ready to learn whatever you want to teach me."
And snapped the thread in half with his teeth.
