94th Mutt Pack Mechanics

Continuing on for the 94th Games mutts will roam the arena in packs (instead of as individual mutts). IC, mutt writers may write a mutt pack as being small or large. Mutt packs may die or simply run away when the mutt pack reaches maximum damage. It is recommended that mutt writers discuss these types of creative decisions and the overall narrative of mutt encounters with the tribute writers they are paired with, so that creative decisions are collaborative.

1. OOC, a mutt pack is a single entity.


2. A mutt pack’s HP is standardized based on the number of tributes in a fight.

• A mutt pack fighting 1 tribute has 15 HP
• A mutt pack fighting 2 tributes has 35 HP (15 times 2 tributes, with 5 bonus HP)
• A mutt pack fighting 3 tributes has 55 HP (15 times 3 tributes, with 10 bonus HP)
• A mutt pack fighting 4 tributes has 75 HP (15 times 4 tributes, with 15 bonus HP)

Note: Bonus HP is added to fights with more tributes because the more tributes there are in a fight, the faster tributes will put TD on a mutt pack. A fight with 1 tribute only has the possibility of putting 1 attack that causes TD on the mutt pack per round; a fight with 4 tributes has the possibility of putting 4 attacks that cause TD on the mutt pack per round. Upping the amount of HP for mutts in larger fights helps to balance that.


3. Instead of attacking tributes one at a time, a mutt pack will attack all tributes in a fight every time the mutt pack attacks. So if there are 4 tributes in a fight then the mutt pack will make 4 attacks each time they post, one attack on each tribute.

Note: Mutt writers should order the tributes assigned to each dice roll within a post according to initiative. For example, in a fight with four tributes the first dice roll in a post should be assigned to the tribute with the highest initiative, the second dice roll in a post to the tribute with the second highest initiative, the third dice roll in a post to the tribute with the third highest initiative, and the last dice roll in a post to the tribute with the lowest initiative. This helps to prevent dice tampering.


4. Like in a finale, instas in a mutt fight will count for 10 damage. A mutt pack cannot insta a tribute, but a tribute also cannot insta a mutt pack.

Note: The core reasoning behind this is that the removal of instas is likely to increase the overall total of damage dealt by mutts. Tributes can still die to mutts, but the focus is on accumulated damage. In this context the removal of the random possibility of an insta death is exchanged for the randomness of increased accumulated damage, which later goes on to influence targets chosen in tribute versus tribute fights, hopefully helping to prevent some situations of OOC bias. Additionally, this rule opens up new creative possibilities for tributes to survive unique damage situations, like the loss of an eye or having their skull cracked.



Please note that the overall goal of the GMs is to minimize tribute deaths via mutts, while maximizing the damage dealt to tributes and the variety of tributes that take damage.

Additionally, by standardizing mutt HP and by having all tributes be attacked every turn, tributes should know what to expect from mutt fights. These mechanics also aim to prevent various possibilities of bias in both mutt writers and GMs.

Standard Mutt Mechanic: Poison

A reminder that poison will not outright kill a tribute. Rather, it will inflict an increasing amount of damage each day, starting from a fixed 5 damage on the first day, plus an additional [*dice=4] to the amount of damage done on each subsequent day.

For example:
• Day 0 of poison: no damage
• Day 1 of poison: +5 damage
• Day 2 of poison: (tribute rolls a 3) +8 damage
• Day 3 of poison: (tribute rolls a 1) +9 damage

Antivenom will halt the damage.

If a tribute uses an antidote and is later poisoned again, that tribute will need to use another antivenom for the new poison. Antivenom does not make tributes immune to poison and cannot be used preventatively.

Faerie Dragons (Throughout the arena)

Despite being mouse-sized and wearing sharp-toothed grins of mischief, the faerie dragons are a marvel with their multicolored scales that change hues with movement and butterfly wings patterned in intricate lacework. Although they appear harmless, these creatures prove to have considerable intellect, a master at stealing baubles and trinkets from unknowing travelers, always eager for a prank.

Thistlehob (Cornucopia, Canopy Forest, Fruit Orchard)

Named after the plant they resemble, Thistlehobs are about 2 feet tall with thorns and brambles sprouting down their spindly arms and legs. They appear humanoid, although the bark-like skin and the milky eyes should suggest anything but. Found in packs, the Thistlehobs excel at making tiny lairs full of traps – mostly crafted out of twigs and branches – to trap their prey. If one finds itself caught in a trap spun by it, one should pray that a Thistlehob grants it mercy, for they are notorious for their sharp teeth and hunger.

Hag Crows (Fungal Groove, Blighted Woods. Moves with the Blighted locations during the games)

As malevolent as their name implies, these crows have a disproportionately long beak that resembles a hag’s nose and a puckish sense of humour. Originally made to spy on rebels, these crows fend themselves on flesh and secrets, which they can whisper back in eerily perfect human speech. The stories warn of instances where if the trees start talking to you at night, look around for signs of hag crows: dead corpses, hushed whispers, or a swarm of black feathers descending upon an unfortunate prey such as yourself.

Fey Nakom (All non-blighted areas- moves with the blight)

Tailored to the fairytale element of the Feywild, these hand-sized butterflies are more colourful than their other counterparts. With technicolor wings and shimmering veins, at a glance these creatures are easy to mistake for a curtain of aurora borealis in the skies they roam. Small animals stream out in front of the hand-sized butterflies, almost comical in their desperate escape from army ant jaws. Years ago Nakoms cleared out dangerous predators so Capitol armies could travel safely, but the swarms were gassed and the project discontinued when they lived up to their name—conquerors—a little too well, leaving the land devoid of all food and then turning on their creators and charges. They are hard to frighten and even harder to escape, which is what makes them such exciting opponents for tributes—along with the fact that they have little regard for whether they kill something before eating it

Snakeroot (Canopy Forest, Cornucopia, Lilypad Lagoon, and Crumbling Cenotes)

There are snakes in the grass, but they haven't always been there. The species are a strange fusion between mambas, vipers, and ivied flora, but once, they were just mere pets in the most enchanting botanical gardens of the capitol. The strong, pinecone-like leaves they have in lieu of scales flowed so cohesively with the flowers and their colors, which spun the illusion that mother nature herself moved and danced. But all pretty things have flaws, and theirs was engraved onto their genetics. The creatures, instead of feasting on insects or photosynthesizing through the skin, turned those sharp fangs to the humans instead. Even when tethered together with the lifeless ivies, these mambas did not lose the graceful ferocity that makes a snake. Now they roam, leaving trails that are unseen through the grass plains, but their scales sing a discordant melody of tree bark and coarse movement.

Devil’s Poison Ivy (Blighted Woods, Fungal Grove, Cornucopia)

This fast-growing plant has evolved in such a way that has made it carnivorous, meaning that, should a person accidentally step over one of its waiting vines, the violence that ensues won't be pretty. A unique, poisonous variation has been cultivated for the 90th arena, stabilizing its ability to survive with a phosphorus deficiency. This deficiency results in an overall faded yellow coloring with bronze splotches and crispy, warped leaves. Sometimes the stronger vines turn red or purple, despite their leaves being just as likely to crunch and crumble away beneath a wayward step.

Little Dear (Throughout the arena)

A living trap, it's difficult for anyone humane to resist the urge to come to the aid of these innocent-seeming deer. Sent out with terrible injuries - arrows and axes lodged deeply into their flesh - and their keening cries genetically modified to sound childlike, from a distance they seem like escaped victims of a hunting encounter. However, advanced medical technology has made it possible to heal a spear through the heart to little more than an artificial wound, all while leaving the weapon in place. To the deer it is the equivalent of a scraped knee and anyone kindhearted enough to attempt to come to its aide will discover that the great antlers atop its head have been sharpened into a jutting mass of deadly blades. Also too late comes the realization that the deer is panicking not because of its wounds, but because their head has been encased in a mask that renders it blind, deaf, and unable to smell. Even if the person following their aching heartstrings thinks they know the wounded Little Dear, precious and worth saving, it does not know them. It knows the only way to be saved here is to save yourself.

Folklore Pixies (Throughout the arena)

Their favourite pastimes are leading travelers astray and frightening young maidens. Cheeky little thieves with sticky hands and devilish laughs - upon encountering a Folklore Pixie, tributes must roll to see if they make a friend or piss it off.

If a tribute is pledged to the Spring CCourt, -1 to their roll.
If a tribute is pledged to the Gloaming Court, +1 to their roll.

If you manage to charm the little being, the Pixie acts as a delivery word style sending voice messages and whispering them in other tribute's ears.

If you anger the pixie, the GMs will roll to see which item it steals from your inventory as per your numbered inventory list in the Ripred Engine (not including weapons or equipped armour.)

Kuo-Toa (Crumbling Cenote, Lilypad Lagoon)

The Capitol, for many years, has loved to mutate things, so they figured, why not start with a simple organism like a fish? Many versions of this creature were created by the Capitol over the years, and as time went on, they were created to be more and more capable of living both in and out of the water (although the water is their preferred domain). The Kuo-Toa are fish-like, yet amphibious. Their faces are like those of frightening, deep-sea fish, and their bodies are structured like that of a two-legged creature. They also have decently functioning arms. While somewhat less intelligent than a human, they are often seen carrying crude weapons, fashioned from things such as bones of other sea creatures that they've chosen as their prey. They speak in a strangle jumble of squeaky sounds and grunts that humans can't understand. (Spear Rolls)

Floraspore (Throughout the arena)

Floraspore, the newest nightmare of a tribute. They say the nectar of a Floraspor is euphoric, and you can sense its mood based on the scent it secretes. When happy, it smells something like strawberry jam. When angry or on alert, it smells almost indistinguishable from the spray of a skunk. The Floraspor's competitive appeal was initially undermined by the mutt-fighting circuits, before the term utility mutt began floating around. Floraspor can produce a number of spores that, if ingested, can cause some serious problems to targets, such as being poisoned or even temporarily paralyzed. The paralysis may not last long, but every second counts in terms of survival.

Manticut (Canopy Forest, Fruit Orchard)

Woof, and we thought mosquitoes were bad. Manticuts almost feel like creatures who were created solely so that so many people in the world would be forced to live out one of their biggest nightmares: huge, intelligent, angry bugs. The Manticuts share the temper of their wasp and mantis cousins, but can grow to a whopping foot-and-a-half feet tall. Their arms take design from the scythe, and are astoundingly powerful. It has been estimated that these creatures are more than capable of severing an entire human limb with a single swipe, should they care to. Heed this warning: if you hear the unmistakable buzz of a manticut, prepare for one hell of a fight.

Blighted Unicorn (Cornucopia, Blighted Woods)

Creatures originally bred for their beauty, were a show of wealth for the richest citizens of the Capitol. However, the Capitol soon realised that with a few minor alterations they could turn this creature of beauty into something else, something terrifying and deadly, the blight releasing a toxin into the air to trick its prey. The perfect trap for tributes. The tribute would be drawn in by the mutations' beauty, mesmerised by the magical shimmer of its coat. Only when they neared the creature the hallucination would drop and they would be faced by a creature destroyed by Blight, rotting and hungry and dangerous.

Moonrise Jellyfish (Lilypad Lagoon, Crumbling Cenote)

Mimicking the phases of the moon, this subtly glowing jellyfish expands and contracts its body from fully round to crescent shaped as it moves. Almost completely transparent in daylight, anyone stung by one will have a difficult time locating their attacker. At night they float like paper lanterns through the sky, lost stars adrift in the dark. Tributes roll for accuracy on attacks. (d4 roll: 1-3: hit, 4: miss).

Magic Shrooms (Fungal Grove, Fruit Orchard, Crumbling Cenotes, Lilypad Lagoon)

Magic shrooms congregate in damp dark areas, feeding off smaller fungi and other insects. Unlike traditional fungi these chemical altered mutations have bug-like features and even though they come across as a little dimwitted, they should not be underestimated. They come in a variety of different sizes and colours, their caps glowing in the darkness. When in danger they release a hallucinogenic gas into the air to throw off their predators.

Leucrocotta (Throughout the arena)

A creature with the body of a stag, the neck of a lion, cloven hooves, and a wide mouth with a sharp, bony ridge in place of teeth, the Leucrocotta mimics human voices as it hunts. For decades, the capitol has used this creature to lure and torture their enemies, utilizing the debilitating fear it causes to force their victims to speak the truth and reveal their treasonous actions.

Orchidjay (Canopy Forest, Fruit Orchard)

These masters of deception are a particularly cruel cross between venus fly traps and the infamous pixie wasp mutts that've been used several times in past arenas. Like the pixie wasps, their go-to hunting method is to appear as a plant- the heads of these birds are actually closer to the bud of a flower. They are experts at unfurling themselves, spreading their beaks wide so that they resemble beautiful red flowers growing along the branches of trees or in the tranquil meadows. Insects or small mammals go to investigate, and then the mutts consume. Using the thorn-like tips of its beak and its vicious claws to tear apart anything that tries to fight back, it also has a pretty impressive flying speed in the case that it needs to make a hasty retreat.

Bushbunny (Canopy Forest, Fruit Orchard)

Careful if you plan on hiding yourself in the pitch- there are others doing the same there. While bushbunnies are certainly more easily considered prey than predator, they've been created with particular defensive systems in mind to ensure their own survival. Their ears are lush with large, leaf-like tufts of hair which resemble greenery and help with their camoflage. They can also use these tufted ears like feathered wings, capable of propelling themselves up to fifteen feet in the air, safe and away from pesky hunters. If they are inevitably faced with a fight, bushbunnies attack as a family and prioritize protecting their young. They are also tied to their burrows in some way and much like nymphs, they seem to draw certain characteristics from the trees or bushes in which they nest. Though the assumption would be that these creatures are, perhaps, not the most lethal, anything can happen in an arena.

Blightbunny (Blighted Woods, Fungal Grove)

Though the infected cousins of the bushbunny can no longer fly due to much of the greenery on their ears being replaced by straw, or brush, or nothing at all, blightbunnies are also considerably more volatile. They grow larger, seem to be more nomadic, and are more aggressive. They can be seen prowling for mushrooms and other fungi to munch on, and emit very loud, haunting screams when alerted to enemy presence. Due to their blight infection, blightbunnies are none to take on illnesses and ailments. Some signs that a blightbunny's infection may be advanced include blindness, deafness, missing ears or limbs, yellow-tinged drool, shallow panting, or wide eyes with dilated pupils.

Fungus Among Us (Blighted Woods, Fungal Grove)

Developed by accident, experiments on decaying corpses done by the Capitol created these creatures. The mushrooms already growing on the deceased were given more strength by mistake, giving them the ability to completely take over the corpse and creating these creatures. Luckily, no more of these seven-foot-tall mushroom creatures will likely ever come into existence, as the "problem" of them taking over bodies doesn't spread, but the Capitol does want to get rid of them due to their aggressive nature, and are therefore willing to use them in the Hunger Games.

IMPossible (Initial Mapping Project of Previously Impossible Terrain) (Throughout the arena)

The IMPossibles, as dubbed by their creators, were designed with genetically enhanced radar capabilities to map out unwieldy terrains. Their flexible arms and legs were engineered with monkey DNA to allow them to navigate through a wide variety of ecosystems, and nodes attached to their ears (designed using bat DNA) allowed cartographers to build maps with new data points. To deter rebels from attacking them, the IMPossibles were outfitted with sharp teeth and the ability to make a disconcerting, high-pitched noise which can cause blackouts when at a close enough range. They often travel in packs, making a 180 decible screeching noise which drives away tributes and other animals.
