in the wilderness, they've become at ease, lounging in the canopies above the waters. they rest, they eat, they play, and they nap. they contemplate a bit – maybe admiring a particularly nice orb of fruit, maybe pondering the great mysteries of life – and then return to their sleepy existence of not doing much at all, swinging from the vines of the cenote, softly chattering to themselves.

a disturbance.

they hear it before they see it. there's a quiet scattering, each of them tucked into the shadows of jagged rock, clinging to the sides of the cenote. it appears slowly. and then two, three, four. they're funny looking things, soft between the gray slates of stone, curiously clumsy.

and there it is, that long ago instinct, sharper than a knife.

this is their place. no one must interfere.

the idleness becomes a methodical impulse, and they descend from the vines.

one lets out a long, high-pitched screech.

If I'm being for real... what could possibly be so entertaining about watching a bunch of teenagers (most of which were done no favors with puberty) walk around aimlessly on your screens? I slept in the dirt last night!!! Which I mean, I've done that before but this time I'd had no drugs or alcohol so instead of a funny story it just looks sad. 

Anyways, I'm about to lose my damn mind from boredom when all the sudden a bunch of tiny ass devil children (not the good kind) fall from the trees and start swinging like they got rent to pay. And sure they missed me, but they got Elise. Like how rude? Anyways, time to put it out of it's damn misery and crush it like a spider.

A hint of sunlight in the darkened chilly sky should be a sign of relief for Elise but she is sure she has seen every hour of the night sky. Sleep is a precious commodity and just like her pot of luck, Elise is not getting it in this arena. Elise clung onto the hand mirror all night, not because she is vain and wanted to study her appearance, but it is the closest thing to the crocheted doll that resides on the head of her bed back home. It will still be there, keeping her lonely pillow company and watching over Louie who will just be as fatigued as she is.

The sun rises quick enough to bounce its rays off the glass of Elise’s hand mirror that lays on her chest. She looks over it and all she can see in this most unflattering position is the bottom of her chin. It is too late to try and force some Zs now, the other’s have started to greet the new day and she sits up with them.

That is when more horrors are reflected in the mirror when Elise’s head is the center of its frame

”Now my hair!” From her curls to her bangs, the color of her hair is now a strong pastel blue. It is very bright against her pink skin. The days spent impressing the capitolites and sponsors are quickly running away down the drain. She definitely struck a nerve with someone and now they are playing games with her. ”I don’t know what I did to deserve this.” An impressive score of eight, joint second place and a proliférer of compliments. What could she have possibly done wrong between all of that?

There is not much she can do about it now; she drives the mirror glass first into the basket of trinkets. The yearning of her injuries seems to have subsided this morning but her joints groan when they guide her to her feet.

But the cenote does not give her nostrils a break. If her stomach was not completely depleted of nutrition, bile and acid would be seeping from her lips right now at the strong stench of murky water that occasionally splashes with falling debris. The only place that has not made her skin crawl is the forest where the bronze winged beast resided. She will be sure to guide her friends there when she remembers the way. ”We should find the forest, it is the only place that has not made my stomach turn.” She has not done much of the decision making so far, opting to follow behind Leonora all of the way.

Elise’s pot of luck tumbles over once again. Something nips her arm, and she leaps in the air, her basket and the contents of it scatters. A pack of monkey and bat hybrid critters swarm the alliance, and she is the only one that has her blood contaminate the polluted water below their feet. The spear is the only thing that remains in her grip, and she will be sure to turn these little critters into skewers after that sharp bite. ”It just bit me!”

Sleep was weird.

Especially here.

Leonora had been plagued with odd dreams her whole life, but the ones in this arena were almost too absurd to describe. Unicorns, faeries with broken wings, and girls with teeth made of pointed glass. It was only when she woke up surrounded by the dark vines and putrid smell of decay to remember that it was all very real indeed.

The morning sun shines brightly through the canopy of the blighted trees, forcing Leo to awake much earlier than she would ever like. Her bones ached from the day before and her joints felt stiff from the awkward sleeping positions over night. She forced herself to stifle a yawn as she stretched away her slumber and patted down any mats in the braided crown that sit atop her head.

"Now my hair!"

She looks at Elise and her jaw drops. What once was beautiful chestnut locks is now blue enough to match the sky.

"Well, at least it compliments your eyes!" Leonora does her best to make light of the situation, but the whole time she is holding in a giggle.

funny enough, the shriek of warning has the opposite effect. one scratches at a girl – and then is immediately skewered in a flash of blades.

they watch the body fall limply from the vines, lost to the depths of the cenote below. there's a moment of silence. and then the screeching turns vicious as they scramble towards them from the shadows, dropping from the canopy to tear at the intruders, clinging onto their bodies with a savage grip. no more fun and games. it's biting time.

”These things don’t know what manners are!”

And she is right. Just as she pulls her spear back after nearly skewering one of them, the litter critters take real offence to what she has just done. One of them chomps. It chomps real hard on her forearm and a scream rips right through her lips.

”Get off me! Get off me!” Elise frantically shakes the bat/monkey hybrid that grips onto her skin with its teeth. It doesn’t budge at first, it clings on long enough to make her entire arm from her wrist to her shoulder feel numb but her pink flesh must not be too tasty as it finally lets go and goes limp on the ground. ”Oh my god! What is with my luck?”

That is quite a question, it obvious now that luck is non existent in Elise’s life but she is not the only one who is being feasted on. There is enough time for her to alert Panda about the creeping critter behind them but Elise’s lips remain sealed while only her weeping eyes do the talking. The girl is crying and she does not have the energy to help her allies.

These things were absolute monsters. Clawing and gashing into my skin. Teeth sink into my upper thigh hard, I yelp out in pain. “Oh my god!!” I scream at the little bitch while blocking another one. “Yallre really taking this TOO serious. Like I’m literally bleeding now.” Was this gonna be a regular occurrence? What about when the other tributes start attacking me? How am I supposed to weaponize being pretty if I keep getting covered in wounds. Maybe i could pull off a sympathy flirt? Wounds weren’t pretty but they sure could make someone feel bad for me. 

I shrug off the thought of my face bleeding (seriously, if you’re gonna hit the face just do me a favor and finish the job), and attack an imp.

Now one of them is crawling up her leg. It reminds her of the time when Louie poked an ants nest with a stick on the street, the poor kid’s cries brought the entire neighbourhood out of their homes. Elise was the only one to come to the rescue, as soon as her hand touched his there was a quick transfer of the infestation. It took hours in the tub to get rid of the last of the blighters on the pair of them. Their parents were not impressed, dad was still whacking lone ants with his slippers well into the evening.

There is no tin bath tub for Elise to soak herself in here though. Nothing to look forwards to when the last of the critters is slain. Just the next nightmare that will jump out when the page is turned.

Just about now is the moment where she does not care anymore. Blood his pouring from her limbs, it is what the world wants to see. It is how they will always remember her. The clown with blue hair and bloodied skin. Damn sucks but she can still feel her heart beating in her chest and the constant bleeding must be a good sign?

She is stood next to Panda, he looks just as dreadful as she does. ”Don’t feel so left out Panda, we are all bleeding!”
