One moon.

Two moons.

Leonora decided to keep track of the nights that passed by tying a bracelet made of ivy rope, and adding a small flower for each moon that filled the sky. She knew she would lose sense of time at some point or another, so she wanted to keep her bearings for as long as possible. Two moons. No canons.

Leonora feared what today might bring.

The four of them had been splitting the night into watches, and she always insisted on being first. It was cathartic, gave her the time to reflect on the day, and if it came down to it-

It gave her the opportunity to run.

The sleep that followed her watch was relaxing. Even in a place swarming with Death, she somehow managed to rest, that is until she felt a light tap on her shoulder, and Hespie's voice whispering in her ear. It must have been the middle of her watch, the other two of her allies sound asleep.

"Leo,"

"Is everything al-" she brought her hands to her eyes, trying to rub the sleep from them, but before she could finish talking or bring the world back into focus, Hespie put her hand across her mouth and her eyes grew wide. A warning. She grabbed Leonora's hand and led her a few feet from the others, still talking in hushed tones.

"You know, everyone always talks about killing the career in their sleep," Hespie whispered, almost seductively in her ear.

"Are you sure? Is there a reason to kill him so early?"

"He's a useless bottom. Besides, his whole plan is to use people and then ditch them. He can't be trusted."

She hesitated for a moment, her entire plan was almost the same, but if someone had the same idea would it be best to take them out early? Her brain was moving too fast to process and her eyes seemed to glaze over as she ran through all the possibilities. Leonora only had a brief second to decide, and her head snapped back to Hespie, followed by a slight nod.

"If that's what you think is best...lead the way." A smile found its way onto the other girl's face and in that moment was when she first realized Hespie's eyes were entirely black, no pupil, no iris, no white.

Just darkness.

A shiver ran down her spine.

It was to turn back now, as Hespie had already drawn her knife and launched it through the air. He woke up with a start and the smell of blood filled the air. There was no turning back now.

She feared the blight had gotten her ally.

And she couldn't help but wonder if she would be next.

Her eyes flicker with the taste of a killer's dusk. 

As she laid down next to the people she trusted the least in the arena, Hesperos Bridger found herself a safe thought to become lost in: betrayal. She couldn't sleep next to them, the last two days proved that. She would lay awake, eyes painted to the darkness above them as the thoughts of what hell she was trapped in consumed her. It drove her mad, just a little, stir crazy in her own skull. This place- not just the Hunger Games, but this arena with all its tricks- has her past the edge. 

When Panda's snores start to rattle on, Hespie takes this as her sign. 

He was the weakest of the four of them, Hesperos had started to gather. Physically, at least, but socially he was a career. He could have connections, just as he would boast from time to time, and she didn't feel sound putting her life in his incapable hands. That boy was a fairy long before coming here, all it would take is one prince on a white horse to show up and he'd leave them to rot in the blight without a minute's hesitation.

Elise rubs her finger and thumb on the mood ring that decorates her finger. Its shade is a dark orange, a signal to say that she is anxious. No ring needs to confirm that for her, this is the second night in the arena, and she feels just as unnerved as the first. At least the strong stench has faded. They have managed to find the forest she ventured to alone on the first day but there is no bronze beauty here.

There is no mirror on her chest tonight either. She has stopped seeing the same face in the reflection, even beyond the altered hair colour, she just can’t see Elise anymore. Doesn’t care anymore. Doesn’t see a need in decorating it. Putting effort into it when nobody else will care.

It won’t matter what she looks like, there will be a knife flying towards her face or the point of a spear dancing towards her abdomen soon. Nobody will care if her lips match her eyes or if there is dirt smudged into her cheeks. She is just a slab of meat that will bleed like the rest of them.

Elise finds comfort at the base of a tree and when her watch is over, exhaustion becomes her best friend, and she is switched off completely. The others are becoming easy to entrust, especially Leo. She hopes if they do decide to kill her in her sleep, they at least do the courtesy of making it painless. Though her already quaking bandaged injuries from the mutated critters groan through the night. She thinks they are what wake her up suddenly, but it is something much worse.

Her body jolts up from the dirt ground of the forest, Leo and Hespie are both stirring, and she automatically tries to dodge a flying knife, but it is not aimed at her. ”Panda get up! They are trying to kill you!” There is nobody else around to throw it. No enemies here. Just allies. Supposed allies.

”What has Panda done? He was asleep!” Elise jumps up onto her feet, she wraps her bladed fingers around the trusty spear that was successful in ending yesterday’s fight. ”Leo what are you doing? Were you aiming those at me too?” Elise says, looking at Leo but aiming the point of the spear towards Hespie. She can only doubt Leo but not Hespie. The colour of the mood ring is a deep red now – panic.

The best thing about being me, other than being super totally sexy and cool and chill and better than everyone, is that I’ve never struggled to get my beauty rest. If I’m lacking in sleep it’s because I’m on a bender and my system is full of drugs. But otherwise, I’ve always found somewhere I can sleep comfortably. So sure, where on the ground and in the dirt but I’ve slept worse places. I mean you should see Chelsea’s bathroom, I’ve slept on that floor. And when I wake up, not a bag to be found. I fell asleep pretty immediately after a long night of Imps and listening to Hespie. And looking at Hespie. God I am OVER her. She is not one of the girlies.

And apparently she knew it because I woke up to jabs of pain from their weapons going into my skin. Ow, what the fuck. Hespie and Leonora both absolutely turning on me right now… like, no one’s even dead yet, this is so stupid. It’s only Elise sticking up for me against them. “Hespie, you can’t handle that I’m so much prettier than you so bad that you gotta make yourself feel better by literally killing me, like that’s so rude to be honest.”

and quite frankly, I don’t see what Leonora is doing. I used to think she was pretty and fun but now I think she’s a two faced dirty little loser who probably has stinky feet. Omg, she really does kind of look like she has stinky feet. I bet all the people back home know it too and she doesn’t have any friends. What fucking losers. It’s fine, Hespie should’ve hit harder because I’ll just kill her first.

This wasn't right.

She knew it deep down.

Attacking someone who was asleep and defenseless...someone who trusted you. A shiver ran down Leonora's spine. The devil was at work here. And the worst part was she knew how much the Capitol was loving it.

If there was one thing she learned from her father it was how to stab someone in the back. That's what politics was wasn't it? Stepping on people until you reach the top? And she learned from her mother to be sure to do it in heels. This wasn't much different really.

Except now someone's life was in her hands.

”Leo what are you doing? Were you aiming those at me too?”

"No I...I would never! Hespie said he was going to betray us, I didn't know what to do," her eyes flutter between her three allies frantically. "I'm so sorry," she spoke to Elise, but maybe Panda more in particular.

The knife grew slick in her palm, hands drenched in sweat.

A part of her wanted to drop her knife and run.

But there was no hiding.

There was going back now.

She had sealed her fate and there was no turning back now.

“Elise, no-!” She shouts, bracing for impact as she watches the girl from eleven take sides with that of their target, Panda. Fucking Panda. Hespie covers her face with her arms, a delayed dodge catching Elise’s spear on the side of her abdomen. “Trust me here, he’s not our ally. The second he finds the other careers he’s going to get us all killed!” He’s fake, a snake, weak, Hespie’s head is swimming with vitriol before he even speaks to her.

How can she take him seriously? She’s tried, and failed, and then tried a little harder, and failed again. She never knew boys like him back home, and she didn’t quite feel like starting now. It’s shallow how he attacks her - literally, both the cut and his read. “Panda, I’m not jealous of you, and I don’t think you’re that pretty,” she says, loading another knife in her grip. Leo tries to straighten Elise’s head on the situation and lands a deep hit into Panda’s forearm, blood beginning to trickle down to his spear. “You’re just a beach twink on dry land - look around! You aren’t going to survive here,” and she’s not going to let him.

Betrayal, is it the worst crime?

In these circumstances, anything goes. Elise does not pack a history of trying to defend her life. She can’t compare blood and death to schoolyard bullies. One upon a time she was the nerdy little girl carrying books higher than her head. The other girls used to knock the books out of her hand. Then she became one of those girls. Meredith and Izzie’s faces prance across Hespie and Leo’s. Is this the time to be one of those girls?

Elise trembles as she pins the long spear against her chest in a defensive position, its head is right in her eye line. All she does is listen. To Leo and Hespie’s reasoning. Panda’s words do not sound like pleas for life. The careers are a different type, meeting Larissa and Xaahira in the training center confirm that. Hespie may be right, what is Panda’s end goal? But then who will Hespie aim her knives at next?

Ahhh! Her mind is about to implode.

Her eyes are flashing between Hespie and Panda with the beat of her heart. Leo is the only one she can trust here.

”You are pretty, you all are but do we really have to kill each other over that?” There is a crack in her mirror and she doesn’t care. They are not painting nails now like they were in the training center.

Is she a type so easily influenced to knock the books out of a little girl’s hands? Or will she be the one to help her pick them up?

”Sorry Panda,” The tears are her punishment, they are at least washing away the dirt on her cheeks but they won’t hide this next crime. ”Hespie is right. You are a career. A killer.”

This wasn't what she signed up for.

This wasn't what she expected.

There was no way for her to have predicted this. Leonora thought she was good at reading people, but these past few days have thrown her for a major loop. She thought she could trust her allies, at least for now, but here she was, quite literally stabbing one of them in the back.

It was wrong.

It was awful.

But it needed to be done.

It was time after all these years, to put herself first. No one else ever did. Not her birth mother, not her adoptive mother, and especially not her adoptive father. Hell, he was the reason she was here. Time and time again the people Leo was supposed to trust proved that they cared for no one but themselves.

So, it was only fair to take a page out of their book.

Elise's first attack attack lands towards Hespie, but the second time she can see the hesitation written across her face. Leonora's breath caught in her throat. She was about to lose one ally, she couldn't bring herself to lose multiple. For the first time in her life, she was at a loss for words.

But Hespie knew exactly what to say.

Elise turned on her heel and swung at the Career pretending to be their ally.

Now it's time to finish it.

She closes her eyes and lets the knife fly.
