She sleeps fitfully and it feels like the day before the reaping when she opens her eyes. She feels like she's back in the house with her father breaking stones in the small courtyard. And then the sounds of the day begin and she realizes where she is, who she is.

Morning breaks hot, but her breath escapes her chest despite the warmth all around her. She can feel the humidity in the dew in the grass. Today the sun would bake the sky and the grounds and blood would run again.

Krueger was asleep next to her, his head lolling to the side. Even in sleep, he always seemed like he was watching his back. Looking out for the knife that would inevitably come. She didn’t have the heart to tell him that it wouldn’t ever be from her. Blood was on her hands from Elijah and she found that she didn’t like its color.

The rush begins the same way it did yesterday - a whirl of sound and buzzing that rips and tears and scratches at her skin. She barely has time to grab her pack and her glaive lest it get ripped out of her hands. Krueger is spirited away in a flurry of wings and she quickly loses sight of him.

The furies drop her in the middle of the woods, her lip scratched and bleeding. What she faces makes her jaw drop and a “fuck me” falls from her lips. A swarm of butterflies blocks out all ambient light streaming through the blighted woods. Willow had always loved the dark, but not what lingered around in it. In the darkness you find shadows that like to play tricks, demons who take pieces of the past and lace it with the present, and memories that fill one’s hollow heart, but empties the organ once morning comes.

But no, this was worse than the Spring Queen, worse than the nightmares that had taken shape last night. Their wings sparkle and shimmer even as visions of Xaa, Krueger, and Thomas dance around her with fungus covering their faces and chunks of flesh replaced by grass. She shakes her head to gather herself because - it wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real. Terror made corporeal by the magic of the Capitol.

But the goddamn butterflies were very real. And they were pulsing, a beating heart waiting for the first move. The first step.

"You know, I really fucking hate butterflies. So like, points for creativity, I guess."

She raises her glaive and steps into the swarm.

There was blood on your tongue, her blood. It rushed through you, sending you into a frenzy. Last night one of the human creators had visited you with a treat. Foliage and dirt soaked with your preys blood. You had swarmed onto the tainted soil, tasting her, breathing her, craving her. This morning, when they had unlocked your cage, you had not hesitated, together as one unit, you had rushed from your confine, racing through the forest to find her. You wanted- no, you needed more.

It hadn't taken you long to find her, it was almost as though she had been waiting for you. The sound of your wings become more frantic as she nears. She looks at you with a look of pure hatred and it fuels your desire to tear into her flesh. You welcome her challenge as she steps into you, blade raised against your razor sharp wings. Your move around her blade, morphing into it as it breaks your formation for the briefest moment.

Surrounding her, you in-prison her, growling with joy and excitement and anticipation.

You were going to rip her to pieces and feast on her blood. The thought alone sends you into a wild frenzy.

She can feel the swarm sense her approach. They can sense her fear, her anger, her malaise. She’d been wandering for so long here, searching for meaning with each swing of her weapon and the answer seemed to be staring her down in the form of a swarm of beautiful and deadly creatures. Her swing is wild but she knocks some of them down, somehow.

They breathe as one and strike her, razor-sharp wings and a buzzing that drowns out the world. She sees Krueger fall through the hologram. She sees Xaa fall in a torrent of blood. Thomas isn’t far behind. Everyone is falling around her, but surely its a trick of the Gamemakers.

Cannons boom all around her she steadies her feet and strikes again. "Is that all you got, bug?"

Her metallic claw slices through you once again and you watch as your brothers and sisters fall, broken and twisted and dismembered. Pain and despair crashes through you as your wings stretch out to their full span. Brothers and sisters who had been by your side from the moment that you were created were being trampled by the big feet of your prey. Despair turns to rage and that rage fuels your unit as you feed off each others emotions.

There was one clear mission: kill.

Something like an echoing growl ripples through the swarm as you close in around the girl. wings hardener you give the command to attack.

The creatures know that she’s a threat. She realizes this now. She’d been telling herself the story of the girl from One with the silver tongue and the slits for eyes like a snake. The lion from One, wearing the mantle of her fallen family. The boy from Eleven who wouldn’t shut his damn mouth, spewing hate and vitriol.

She had told herself a story about them. About herself. About how the girl from Twelve had no hope of surviving this place. About how the blood on her hands and over her body was just paint. About how the black veins from her fey gift hadn’t already crawled up half of her body. About how she was the hunted and they were the hunters. A rabbit lost in the woods with no hope to fight back.

But Willow Hush isn’t a rabbit. She’s a wolf. And she knows to survive this cursed day, she must strike and kill each and every one of these goddamn butterflies.

Whoever holds the weapon is the hunter. And from where she stands, scratches littering her body and her breath coming in gasps, she definitely wasn’t the rabbit anymore.

"Are you all watching?" she asks the cameras in the trees, the cameras whirling around her. "Are you entertained yet?"

Two more thin lines are drawn into her skin, blood seeping from the corners. But it not nearly enough to take her down. She bares her blunted teeth at you speaking in a language that you cannot understand. You watch her closely, so closely that you could see the vein in her neck pulsing in time with the rapid beating of her heart.

All it would take to destroy her would be a one well placed attack. Shredding the artery in her neck would have her crumbling to the ground, blood leaking through dirt stained fingers as she desperately tried to stop the bleeding.

But it wouldn't matter how desperately she clawed at her neck, because it would never be enough. Her blood would soak the earth, it would fill our bellies. And best of all, she would be dead.

The excitement and anticipation was enough to look past the brothers and sisters that fall with her next strike, because they died so that the rest of us could live.

The attack grows in fury, as if she has pissed off the gods or the powers that be with her taunts. Good, Willow thinks, spitting blood as the swarm takes chunks out of her arms and torso. 

Her eyes flash black and her vision grows dark and her heart slows. No matter how hard she fights, the swarm grows and breathes and seethes as one. Whatever strength she has is moving towards the swarm in a rush - a payment unasked. 

"Now we're talking," Will laughs, stepping lightly on the balls of her feet. "I asked for a fight, didn't I?"

Blood begins to flow heavier, turning the ground beneath her feet into mud. You could feel with each strike, each cut, that her strength was beginning to slip, that her heart was beginning to slow. You had felt it beating through your wings from the moment you had spotted her, but now as you watch her begin to fade it felt weaker, like it was preparing to give up, to surrender.

She spits more words at you and your brothers and sisters, words laced what- a challenge? You couldn't quite tell. You could sense a challenge behind them, but there was also something else that you were unable to decipher.

Not that that was what mattered in this moment.

What mattered was feeling the beating of her heart stop, permanently.

The fury inside of her dies as she bleeds. The swarm seems to swell with each gash on her arms and legs, each scrape on her face and hands. The holograms all around her flicker and flash in bright colors and lights bouncing off trees and warping in the dim sunlight.

"I guess it's time for my last will and testament," Will starts with a laugh at her own joke.

"Or my last something. Man, I really do fucking hate butterflies." Will breathes out a sigh, her lungs burning and her vision swimming before she turns back to the swarm. 

"But this - this place - it changes people for the better and for the worst and then we die and - and, ah, fuck it. It doesn't matter, does it?"

Nothing matters anymore.

The end was imminent, you could tell by the sloppiness in her movements, by the way she panted for air. It was exhilarating to watch, numbing the pain of seeing each of your brothers and sisters squashed beneath her desperate attacks. Each a sacrifice for the greater good.

Your excitement grows and you dive around her head so fast that her eyes couldn't keep track, a hypnotising dance that would lead her to her internal slumber. Your eyes pinpoint the pulse on her neck, it was a faint movement, invisible to the naked eye, but prominent to you own as this is exactly what you had been created for. To eat. and repeat.

Racing around her head you spread your wings wide. They harden as you dive for her neck.
