The Story of Four's first victor is far from told, but for now we focus on the legacy he left behind. It is not a kind one - unfortunately for the little Olympian, his desperation to become something better only served to lead him further into ruin. That of himself and all those burdened by loving him. His children - now approaching their sixties and settled with families of their own - bear these scars one way or another.

It's a tale of two brothers. Blair's sons - a set of identical twins named Oleander and Nathaniel - have hated each other for as long as either can remember. There is no love in the blood they share, just venom and vitriol. The eldest, Ollie, is intent upon expanding the wealth and influence their father so clumsily stumbled into and Nicky seems just as set on destroying it. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious - and just how many will be caught in the crossfire in the meantime.

Blair Murdock [deceased] - The only thing the brothers have ever agreed upon is that they don't talk about their father. Pieces of him linger around their houses, letters penned by his hand and old pictures gone yellowed with age but even they are shoved off into shadowy corners. Inquisitive minds were promptly dismissed if their questions strayed too far toward their grandfather. Most can glean that he remains an open wound, even after all these years.

Love Buchanan [deceased] - Her relationship with Blair was not overtly romantic, in spite of the fact that they'd chosen to raise children together. She was, overall, a good influence on Blair and was responsible for much of the family's happy memories. Love was an outspoken advocate for the districts, which was unfortunately thrown into the spotlight thanks to her connection to Blair. Her arrest and subsequent avoxing are what most blame for the family's immediate downfall.

Lennon Buchanan [deceased] - Blair's one and only victim, the boy he'd accidentally drowned before he was reaped. They had been best friends all their life, and planned to run away together before the accident. How fucked up it is that he ended up also being his children's uncle is not lost on anyone involved.

THE FAMILY

A stereotypical victor family, spearheaded by a charming socialite - they boast a shockingly spotless record after all these years. Though the family has had no Games related acclaim for some time, they are picture perfect philanthropists. The family is tight knit and are only ever seen in the the public together, with their father leading the charge. He's everything a family man should be, media claims. They've attended many publicized charity events - from cleaning up the beaches to passing out sandwiches in the slums. Oleander's family is the very ideal of one, and seems confident one of his children will soon reclaim the crown his father so clumsily stumbled into.

Sure, every now and then there are whispers of something sinister beneath this perfect facade. Of strange baptisms in acrid saltwater, or a collection of severed tongues sitting under the floorboards of their basement. All unfounded rumors, of course. That one of their children has suddenly gone mute is entirely unrelated, and a personal matter at that.

No more questions, thank you.

Oleander "Ollie" Murdock [63] | @fabulousraven - A charismatic, dominating figure. Oleander goes to great lengths to maintain complete control over his family, and thus his children as afforded very little privacy. Their rooms are subject to sudden searches and their 'interests' carefully curated. He's far from the perfect man he presents himself to be, with a cold, cruel rage that seems to always be at a slow boil. There's also the matter of holding his reaping age children underwater every year until they lose consciousness or the fact that he flew into such a blind rage that he cut the tongue off one of them. To send a message, to teach a lesson - he didn't want to do it and it was a shame that they had brought him to that point. It's stressful, leading a family. And he's doing the best he can.

Elaine Murdock [59] - She could probably speak up on her children's behalf, hell her husband might even listen. There is little in the world that Ollie loves more than maintaining his status but Elaine is a close second. She is comfortable in her position at her husband's side, and the security that it provides. She's distant from the children she bore, it's hard to grow attached to somebody else's playthings after all. She is certainly not cruel, she keeps the family presentable which is all that was asked of her.

Era Murdock [18] | maverick hale 🌧️ d5 [nyte] - He inherited his father's silver tongue and none of his wit. As the eldest son, he's had the pleasure of sitting back and watching the skin on his father's palms form calluses. The first to be subjected to every new cruelty he learned to perform. He's his father's first true disappointment.

THE FAMILY?

Yes, Nicky Murdock has had a few kids of his own but it's a stretch to call him a father.

He wasn't there when his first set of twins were born. Their mother hadn't been able to track him down. He doesn't remember where he was, so much time is lost to him. The first year of their lives he saw them a handful of times. They don't always feel like his flesh and blood and he knows that means there's something wrong with him.

Another woman, another not-quite-love story, another set of children. He swore he'd do better this time and it stings because he actually meant it. He was there when they were born, he saw them take their first breaths. When he realized their mother needed help he even offered to take the boy off her hands.

But this is Nicky Murdock we're talking about, and his love is ruin. Sometimes, it's not enough to want to be better. Cade was with him when he relapsed and his brother is a sick fucking opportunist. It's a miracle he didn't lose the other three - but he hasn't thought too hard about how all that happened.

They live along the coast, of course, they're Murdocks but in a decidedly poorer part of town. Their house plays at something grand but is full of rotten neglect, the basement has been flooded for at least a month now and the lights go off at inopportune times. Nicky doesn't know that because he hasn't been home. In the years since Cade was taken he has given up playing pretend at a family man.

He sends home money. Sometimes.

When he remembers.

Nathaniel "Nicky" Murdock [63] | maverick hale 🌧️ d5 [nyte] - A deeply troubled child all his life, Blair was forced to pull strings to keep him out of the detention center most of his life. Hot headed and passionate in opposition to his brother's clever calculation, he often found himself shunned by everyone but his father. Nicky today is a mess of a man, no one is even exactly sure of his whereabouts though there are rumors he's living in a fisherman's boat just off the coast.

SOME NOTES!

Some men will really turn their family units into weird drowning cults instead of go to therapy.

Character creation is entirely open, I have no set idea of how many siblings there are or their dynamics so feel free to take what I've given in this little blurb and tone it up or down to your liking.

The set in stone bits are:

-There is no privacy in this house, rooms are open to search at any time and items will be taken without permission. If you want to keep a secret, you're going to have to be very smart about it.

-They are not allowed out of the house without permission, save for school and training. If you want to sneak out, you're going to have to be very smart about it.

-Image is everything, Ollie wants to appear perfect and put together no matter what the truth might be. They are the family of Four's first victor after all. Disobeying might leave you subject to... extreme punishment. As someone found out recently.

-Swimming is a key aspect of their training regimen, and conditions they are forced to endure are outright dangerous and border on torture. Think freezing temperatures, against strong currents, trying to out swim the tide coming in. He's got quite the fixation with water it seems.

-To prove you have been putting work into your training, every year the kids are held underwater for an increasing number of minutes depending on age.

- No one has died yet, but there have been close calls.

All of these children are victims of narcissistic control and abuse, though it is possible that some have managed to thrive within this environment while others have been completely crushed underfoot - feel free to elaborate on that as you will! Are they looking to escape? Doomed to follow in their father's footsteps? Do they turn toward their siblings for support or shun them in hopes to gain safety for themselves? Tell the story you want to tell, I'm just along for the ride!

Blair is white, as are both Elaine and Ollie so most of the biological siblings will also fall into that category. (Though if you want a child of an affair, an adopted kid, or something like that hmu - we have some wiggle room!)

character ideas:
- "adopted" at a strange time, when he was still very young but old enough to remember that he never spent time in an orphanage. Oleander brought him home with him one night. Elaine hated that, he remembers yelling and sitting outside on the lawn for so long that the fireflies came out to say hello. Sometimes this memory feels like a very old dream.
- His name was something else once, something that flowed off the tongue a little bit like a song but try as he might, the memory's been swallowed by the waves Oleander is so fond of. In his dreams, his mother, his real mother stands at a doorframe surrounded by darkness, she opens her mouth, she calls out his name and no sound comes out.
- Likes swimming well enough but likes the idea of sailing even more. Has a little model of a sailboat he's been whittling hidden under a floorboard in his room. Every time Oleander finds one of his creations, it gets tossed in the fire and then he just starts again.
- Grew up telling stories to his siblings, wild imaginations of a family that got on a boat and sailed away across the ocean. Each night there was a new chapter to their adventure, a new adversary, he'd bounce around the room pretending to swashbuckle peacekeepers on the open seas. He loved making his siblings smile.
- Has snuck out once or twice to putter around the Vanas docks in the hopes that one of them will take him sailing, it's happened before, which is what captured his heart so entirely in the first place.
- Got pulled out by the riptide once during training, the weather was bad, he sunk below the waves for a moment and suddenly he was turning head over heels. He's certain he almost died that time and probably would have if he hadn't been netted out of the water by a passing fishing boat.
- was known by his siblings as being uncrushable. If one of them messed up with him around, he'd mess up harder and run his stupid mouth until their father's face turned red. (: (poor eras trying to protect his lil bro)

plots you might be interested in: I would like this boyo to be the avowed child! Maybe he finds out that he wasn't just adopted, his father took him from his home because he's a Murdock by blood as well. In order to keep the secret contained, to keep the Murdock image clean, Oleander cut his own bastard son's tongue out. If not into that, he's probably just likely to get avowed because of everything else above.

-Bastard daughter to Ollie Murdock and Adriana Dieu-le-Veut. Her mother is a singer and a bar maid at a little coastal tavern with very piraty vibes.
- Mother does not care for her at daughter at all except for when she can be used as a weapon against Ollie to make "charitable donations" in exchange for her letting her daughter live with him. She also is having an affaire with Nicky who helps her more or less kidnap her daughter away from her fathers side of the family.
- She herself is obsessed with gaining her fathers apporval and love. Feels neglected from all sides of her family so in a way to make herself feel valued she tries to train the hardest. Pushing herself past limits that put her life in danger. Possibly passed out varius times trying to stay under water longer than she should have and needed rescuing.
- Will also snitch on her siblings, always watching to see if one of them will slip and she can report them to her father. Basically always looking for a reason as to why she is better than them.
- Like her mother, she is a talented musician and loves to sing.

character ideas:
- growing up, hudson followed in the footsteps of his siblings to learn what you could and couldn't get away with in the family. any time he slipped up, he tended to rely on one of his older siblings to take the fall for him. some siblings saw him as the baby of the family and others were probably annoyed that he always let other siblings take on the more harsh punishments for him.
- for a small period of his childhood, he was a soft bright light in the family that did his best to keep his siblings upbeat while their parents were away. i think hudson felt bad for his older siblings because he didn't fully grasp the gravity of their situation, and tried his best to make sure he didn't fall into taking the same path that they did.
- depending on who the avoxed kid is, i want hudson to have been closest to them. they bonded over the strict rules of the family and how they felt unfair, especially coming from hudson who didn't have to endure the worst of it for the longest time. but when the avoxed sibling was looking for support from him, he froze up and stayed quiet. (happy to work out exactly how they were avoxed with whoever plays them, and i can adjust this as needed. just mainly want hudson to blame himself for what happened, whether it was his fault or not).
- the small light in hudson seemed to die after their sibling's tongue was taken, finally realizing the reality of their family situation. he quickly fell into line and has started doing his best to try and erase any sense of individualism he has left.
- since his sibling's tongue was removed, hudson has a bit of a distant look on his face at all times. staring out windows, eyes locked down on his plate at dinner, or even staring just slightly to the right of someone's head while they're talking. he used to struggle holding his breath during the "baptisms", but ever since then he has an unmoving expression through the whole process, almost like he's fully disassociated from his body.

plots you might be interested in: i'd be down to explore the aftermath of hudson's loss of joy in life when his sibling lost their tongue and just kind of the repercussions of that. maybe some sibling plots, either them trying to get him to open back up to be who he was before or any negative feelings they would have towards him. i think he has a fear of not living up to his siblings so he has started to devote himself to diving rather than swimming, because the feeling of falling into the water gives him a strange sense of freedom for those few seconds.

character ideas: Cade is one of Nicky's eldest children. As we discussed a bit privately, his mother is very much out of the picture. His parents were never married, meaning traveling between the two if they weren't living together was extremely challenging. While both Nicky and his mother (name TBD) have had their issues with alcohol and drug use, his mother's involvement in such things led the government to deem her unfit to have custody of Cade.

During this time, Cade was the only (pending other people's chars obvs!) to live with Nicky. They probably lived together for some time and their relationship was stronger than ever during this period! However, on the technicality of Nicky's poor habits and income, maintaining custody of Cade became a challenge that he couldn't logistically afford to maintain. As the next closest relative to either his mother or father, Cade had to move to live with Ollie and The Family who swooped in to offer his care. Even though he's not one of Ollie's sons, I imagine the expectation of him to take on the rules and responsibilities from them still stands. Which is going to be jarring and fun!

plots you might be interested in: I imagine Cade has been apart of Ollie's family's living situation for maybe a few years at most, but the identity of The Family is still foreign as he's grown up outside of the sphere while everyone else grew up within it! I'd love to explore how he copes with those experiences! Mixed with his sense of independence and self-sufficiency, I also imagine his inability to follow rules not made by him could prove to create quite the conflict!!

- Tries to make all of her dolls and toys float but they mostly sink ):
- Is a dab hand at this whole being submerged in water thing, actually enjoys it. Wants to be a mermaid after all.
- Goes into incognito mode quite regularly as she creeps around the house, accidentally/purposely spooks her siblings all of the time.

character ideas: it's giving attis looking in a mirror, she hates when someone mentions cade is older than her (by SIX minutes), what is it about being the daughter of unfit parents that makes you unstoppable? whirlwind force of nature who likes to pretend she hates when eyes are on her but really thats a big fuckin lie. sarcastic. unafraid of telling you what she's thinking. definitely did all of the grocery shopping as soon as she realized neither of their parents was going to, she's a terrible cook but she knows how to warm up a can of something. she absolutely loves the water. bury her in the sea. is up with the sun most days, finding cliffs to dive off of and depths to be curious about. minimum five jobs at a time, one of which is always helping maintain boats that frequent their docks. probably waitresses at a diner where she lied about her age to get the job initially, and a dog walker. she helps out at the nursing home every weekend, running bingo. somehow never has any money for anything but food.

→ character ideas: princess of the coast turned local sea hag, there were signs that led to ariadne’s tragedy if you wished to retrace it: the steady fall of her grades and grace, holes in her once-perfect attendance, and, of course, the fallout, the spectacle, the attack.

she truly had little regrets for it.

murdock cousin goes on a rampant and stabs her friend! was the craze of the reporters for weeks, her face plastered across every yellowed paper and their yard crawling with those who wanted more of the story, and everyone at school dispersed like fishes around a shark whenever she turned a corner. and although she was dropped from theatre, ballet, and every other class she had signed up for, ariadne’s heart would have been singing with total delight if it had not also ruined attis’ reputation in tow.

but that was how nearly everything happened to them in most cases: in tow, their pull towards each other inexorable and mythical, two whirlpools swirling hopelessly together. they came to this world in tow, yanked out as one scarlet mass, and then they were abandoned by their father in tow, left behind as driftwood. the world loved to inflict its misery upon them twice, attis and ariadne, but whereas attis pained to try and find his way around the maze walls, ariadne was a girl weary of labyrinths. 

she wanted to be free of it all. she wanted to outrun the whirlpool, swim against the current, escape and live by a cliffside as a rumored sea witch and lie to the people about the contents in her strange, slimy soup, and she would have done it all, abandoned ginny and her mother, even abandoned attis in tow, if it hadn’t been for the letter.

delivered to her personally, the murdock stamp glossy upon its seal, it was short and sweet: “you besmirch nicky’s name, you besmirch ours. clean up your act, or the consequences come in pairs.”

ariadne tore it to shreds in the very next seconds.

upon retrospect, perhaps she should have kept it, offered it up to the courts as a proof of threat upon hers and her brother’s lives, but the debris of the letter were quickly picked by a salt wind as she turned tail and ran home for attis, to make sure they had not gotten to him yet, because everything happened to them in twos, and so if he died, then she would too.

then she would too.

First and foremost, thanks to everyone for the amazing response. I am so excited to go on this twisted little journey with you all. I'll be sure to make it as wonderful and wild as I can. As of acceptances, I would love to see all bios done in a month's time, with a tentative due date of October 17th. I myself am a chronic procrastinator and trust I feel your pain - life gets in the way sometimes! If something comes up reach out to me and we will figure out an extension.


gamemaker kelsier - The first child of an affair, would love if we made him 17 so it's barely a year after Era was born and that's just salt in the wound, you know? I worry for his safety, such spirit does not lend to peace in places like this. Tongue-gate is still up in the air, but it did occur in an uncharacteristic rage, so that is definitely a possible motive. I'll be in touch with interested parties about the avoxing soon, but regardless welcome to the family. I hope you enjoy your stay.

She had all the social grace of her mother, content to talk for hours on end if allowed, and she shared her father's ceaseless ambition. Clever, charming, content. She flitted between interests like a hummingbird to nectar; one day wanting to be a doctor, the next wishing she could join her uncle out at sea, only for a week to pass and she'd find herself trying her best to become the victor her father so desperately wanted.

Training came naturally to her, quick on her feet and steady with her aim, and in her youth she was blind to the subtle cruelty that came with being a Murdock child. It was easy to be distracted by the glory of Oleander's wish — the son of Four's first victor reclaiming his father's legacy — that she could allow herself to ignore the horror of it.

As early as twelve, she can remember waking up on the day of the Reaping, brushing her hair and putting on her best dress. A lamb for slaughter and pageantry. Her father said to hold herself calmly and surely, to accept honor when it was bestowed, to train her body and mind to become capable of withstanding the worst facets of human nature. She had been happy, healthy, and blissfully ignorant. It wasn't until she was fourteen — two years of manifesting her name being called, two years of manifesting that look of pride in her father's expression — that she allowed herself to focus on what was truly happening within the television screen.

These were kids, humans, just like herself. Only a handful each Games as trained as her family, the majority of them frightened and in over their heads, mirror shards of herself being crushed and broken and shattered under the force of the Capitol on a loop. And that's what her father wanted for her, wanted for all of her siblings, to endure that very same torture. When she realized that she was not immortal, that namesakes are not shields, that survival is guaranteed for no one, she came to understand just how fragile her seemingly perfect life was.

Her father encouraged her siblings just the same as he did for her — and if ever her name was called, and if ever she was slaughtered on national television, she felt terribly sure of the fact that her father would simply... continue. Try again with the next child, and then the next, until his entire bloodline was drained and empty at his feet for the price of a singular crown. Fantasizing about risking her own life had been a strange thing all its own, but it was the risk to her siblings that truly set her against Oleander.

It made her resent him, this perfect figure that had been so loving to her, all in the facade of trying to guide her into becoming a machine, a killer, a victor. It was all the same, everywhere she looked, in all of her kin, the same tragedy repeating over and over. She should have pieced things together as soon as the first drowning, should have recognized the apathy and ruthlessness of a man who could hold his children flailing under the salty sea, but she was a daughter before she was ever a martyr. She wanted his affection, his approval, until she realized he only wanted a thing that she could offer him. Not her. Even if she was strong, smart, and capable of handling his intense teachings, it didn't change the fact that she was replaceable.

The first time she approached him in his study, fifteen and full of rage, she demanded him to reconsider his actions. To look at the way he treated her younger siblings, to come to terms with the madness of his desire, the unending hunger that threatened to swallow every aspect of the Murdock name until there was nothing left but his void of want. He was a selfish man, and a cruel father, and his first punishment for her first rebellion was to sentence her to her room for the weekend. Silenced, secluded, but not sated.

She challenged him again, and again, until once again all too late she finally realized that there was no getting through to him. With spite in her voice, she told her father that she was going to the Justice Building to report every awful, twisted, violent trial he forced them to go through. The drownings would end, his mistreatment would stop, she was on the eve of turning seventeen when she finally felt ready to act. To rescue her siblings, to help provide order to a family so ruled by chaos, to be more than a girl chasing her father's dream.

When Oleander was dealt with, she liked to imagine how nice things would be for her family. She could consider being a doctor again, she could take her siblings to the beach and know that one day that terrible, sickening memory of being held under the waves would wash away with time. They could heal, and they could live full lives without ever caring about winning some worthless crown. All Blyth wanted was to save her siblings from the shark in the water — to the point that she was blind to see it rising up from the darkness beneath her.

Of course, she has a lot of memories.

She will never forget that day alongside Lore, the trauma they faced together. The warmth of blood on her hands, the shame in her heart, a sense of pride dying in an unfair fight.

There is a before and after to the person that Blyth Murdock was, and who she has now become. Once, she wanted her father to answer for his sins, to be punished by a power bigger than herself. To be forced to sit in front of a group of his peers and admit to his wrongdoings.

And now she lives in her sorrow, and her anger, and her undying urge to save her kin; and she plots, waits. What her father doesn't know just might kill him. And at this point, she has no qualms drawing a blade across his throat in the night and giving his body to the sea.

There will always, always be a new dream to pursue.

Added some structure to Nicky's side of the family. There's quite the case of disappearing mothers here, but I'm assuming neither is interested nor able to be parental figures right now - feel free to discuss with your twin what you would like to have happened with that. But hey! At least three of Nicky's kids are currently living together, that's like, impressive considering all that they've been through already.

This is definitely a less structured family unit, stark in contrast to the strict conformity expected of Ollie's kids - they could be anywhere, doing anything! The world is their oyster except they have a dad who frequently returns to traumatize them with love bombing and their brother got kidnapped into a cult a little while back!

mat - This is seriously such a fucked up plot and I can't wait. I know he's probably having an absolutely terrible time right now but at least it will be fun for us! There is not a single doubt in my mind you will do absolutely wonderful things with him, but I will be tormenting him especially with more dad related trauma in the future! Unfortunately Nicky's not a good enough dad not to have a favorite son.

As worried as I am about her, something tells me you will handle it beautifully. It probably would have been nice to have had the chance to be a child, to get to know yourself before you have to worry about picking up shifts to leave the lights on but not everyone is afforded such luxury. I wonder how she feels about that.

even being around your siblings, most of them try to tiptoe around you. they know well not to touch anything they think belongs to you. you have confronted your parents multiple times about them removing things that belonged to you, but each time you are met with the same answer, and the same punishment. at this point, you are certain you can hold your breath underwater longer than you have been alive.

you dont care that your father is a monster, and you have a feeling that he knows you are one too. if there is someone that could mess everything up for him, it would be you. your mother can only do so much. she can only play peacemaker so much before she cant even talk your father out of it. you think she is weak, but she is also your strongest life line.

youve seen it get bad, and youve seen it get worse in this house, but you are not afraid to go toe to toe with a dragon. everyone walks gingerly through mine fields while you step down as hard as you can. you are willing to take the heat, if it means that everyone else can get a break from time to time. it does not mean that your father does not keep everyone in line, but you are the one that he needs to check the most often. it is your gift to your siblings, no matter how much they are weary of you too.

they definitely dont follow the rules like they should, however, they are usually also in some sort of punishment for arguing with their father. a day doesnt go by where someone has to try to break up a shouting match between them and someone in the house.

during their time at the academy, they are unhinged towards other children but a little more critical of their siblings. they will even offer to help their siblings with things they are working on in order to help them look favorable in their trainers eyes. this is where the siblings see the good in them, they know they are built to take the brunt of the abuse from their father. they are able to use that leverage to take his watchful eyes off of them.
