There's a certain sense of excitement that strikes into Geigers veins, electricity and fire coursing through his fingertips as he hovers over the controls for the Combat Arena, steel and weaponry staring back at him.

It's easy to assume, to disregard, to jump the gun in an eagerness to pull the trigger. Geiger knows this, years spent patiently waiting amongst the whispers of the forest, years spent preparing for the worst and acting accordingly. It's why he's able to hold his judgements as the two fighters step into the ring, their faces appearing on the scoreboard above, health bars close behind.

Truly, if the Games could teach one anything it would be to expect the unexpected. Goliath has slain David, David has slain Goliath, one's size and stature pale in comparison to their desire to live. Just ask any of the Victors, especially the young ones. Torian Vice has a crown of thorns sewn into his head for a reason, after all.

"Fighters, at the ready." His voice sweeps across the arena, trumpeted by the speakers that dot the walls. "First to deplete the other's health wins." He says plainly, then punctuates it with a smirk almost tangible through the microphones. "And remember," The barricades between the two come down, faux-bloodshed vibrating in the air.

"- aim for the throat."

Skulking along the corridor, Mateo reaches the edge of the wall and slowly takes a peek at whoever he has been paired up with, careful not to be detected. He’s good at being quiet, lessons learnt from nights spent padding silently across the floorboards after his parents have had a fight, but he’s not good at whatever this is. A spar? Really?

The girl he spots is not a stranger. Even someone as socially distant as him knows Nessa Garner, chestnut brown the same color as her brother’s, not a career but a victor sibling. He’d say that this is equal ground, but the Games have never been anything but an Izar graveyard.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Then he bends low and moves quick, rushing in out of nowhere, the faux-dagger he has picked up along the way gleaming as it catches the light midair.

“Think fast, Garner!”
