”You’re the poison and special weaponry expert?” Tarik Nahl shakes his head as he waves the magazine spread that has his friend’s face on the cover.

”Well duhh…it is my beautiful face in your hand.” Ivan picks up one of the several copies that is piled on the couch that he is laid on. He raises the cover next to his head and pulls a goofy grin next her stern looking portrait. ”Look, we look the same!”

”You’re not the expert though, your father is. I am sure even your brother is more qualified.” Despite the room being filled with a disgusting taste of questioning doubt, Ivan pours a glass of red wine for his friend and a glass for himself on the side table between the couches that they’re sat on. ”I’m a Korsch, he’s a Korsch. Why does it matter? It is my name of the building too.”

Ivan sits back in his couch as he cradles his glass. Tarik takes his own gets comfortable too, but it doesn’t stop the questioning.

”You’re telling me that you know all about chemical compounds and how to make poisons?” Tarik is the first one to take a sip from the wine glass.

Ivan shrugs. He raises an eyebrow and waits.

Tarik hasn’t swallowed yet; the red wine burns the back of his mouth. His eyes plead with Ivan who still hasn’t taken a sip from his own wine glass.

Tarik spits out the wine, the darkened alcohol immediately stains his white shirt pink, including Ivan’s cream couch. Ivan just laughs, a rolling chuckle in between big gulps of the wine. ”You really thought I would poison you? Imagine the clean up of something so foul in my own home…”

Ivan pulls out a hanky from his trouser pocket, his friend has red residue around his face like a child who hasn’t been taught how to eat properly. ”Wipe your mouth you dirty boy!”

Ivan continues to finish his glass of wine. He raises an eyebrow and waits.

It is quick, effortless and quite an artistic ending for his friend as his body falls limp on the pink stained couch. ”Don’t worry Tarik, you foul thing! I will pay for someone to clean you up.” Ivan reaches for his friend’s unfinished glass and hits dial button next to his Dad’s number on his cell phone. There is some good news to report.

”Death by misadventure.”

”Sounds like something he would die of.” Ivan picks at the bowl of dates on his dad’s desk. He is the only kid in here, the only one in the building. No older brother and no younger sister. Just his dad’s boy who is delivering the best news today.

”And it is. That is what the coroner has written.” But the Korsch patriarch has not looked into his son’s eyes once since he stepped into the office. His frail winkled brown eyes are more fixated on the coroner’s report that has been published, ensuring that is not a single mention of his family name in it.

”And did they trace it? Did they trace your stuff. It happened so fast, you should’ve been there…”

”Not a single unknown substance in the report. Cocaine. Marijuana. A whole lot of brain junk, not something you take is it?”

”No, me? No…no…you know me! Too sophisticated to waste myself on that, I am just like you Pa.” Ivan slaps his hand on the desk, just try and get some kind of reaction from the old man but nothing. ”My poison is wine.”

”You can leave now son.”

”Nothing else you need from me?”

”No. No, send in your brother.”

”Miro is here? Fine, I’ll be the little dick's messenger!”

“You’re letting him represent our family?”

”Well nobody else got the job did they? But me, just me. Hehehe.” Ivan is too distracted by replying to a fan on one of his many social media pages on his phone to dive deep into this family dispute.

His sister, Lilijana’s phone pings and she shakes her head.

”You have notifications for me?”

“Yes, because it will only take 10 characters for you to ruin this family’s profile.”

”Just 10? You bet?”

”Ivan! Ivan, we need to talk strategy. Your new role will open so many more doors for this family.” The patriarch perks up from his big old leather chair at the desk. Lili is pacing around the office with her phone in her hand while Ivan is saddened to discover the date bowl is empty.

”I have only just been announced as gamemaker, can we not celebrate first before talking strategy?”

”No, this is the only good thing that has happened to you. No celebrating. You can’t lose it.”

”Lose it? The only good thing? Wow dad, really grounding me as the true spare that I am!”

”Spare?”

”Of course I am the spare! Miroslav is your chosen successor and Blondie over there,” He points over to his sister who is silent. ”She is the woman, she is good PR. Psychologist sister. Someone with a profession! This a compliment sis…”

Ivan giggles as he walks up to his younger, on paper more successful sister. The one that used him as a fake patient in her training. They weren’t torture methods, but they definitely felt like it to him. ”Pa helps poison tributes,” Lili has commented on Ivan’s nail biting before, says it is a symptom of anxiety or just simply a bad habit. Ivan bites a thick thumb nail that he has been tending too for weeks. He flicks it at his sister’s eye. ”And you just poison your patient’s minds.”

Ivan dodges a punch from his sister. His father erupts from his desk, but Ivan’s response is just a shrug and a swift exit through the door. ”Thanks for the support, but I think I am going to do this myself! I am not Miro’s assistant anymore. I am nobody’s assistant. I am going to have my own assistant! Don’t worry, the marketing campaigns will have KORSCH written in big bold letters. They’ll all know who made this fucking beautiful man!”
