Chip is a wounded comic without much regard for other people. His narcissistic demonstrations of humour are almost certainly at the detriment of somebody else, and he neglects all concept of people’s emotions. Ironic, as what he seeks more than anything else is the approval of others.
In the past the Skylark family was quaint and kept to themselves. Then, it was revealed that his mother had been having an on-and-off affair with a number of different men, all under his father’s nose. Revealed how? Because Chip found secret letters between his mother and her dalliances. It was her thing, and at the age of thirteen, that was enough to send him into a spiral. He told his father, there was a dramatic bust-up about it all with screaming and shouting, yet at the end of it all – the father was never strong enough to leave, and his mother was all too happy to stay and linger through the relationship.
Still together now, Chip wants to do anything that will get him out of the house. He’s seventeen, he feels rebellious, he feels obliged, but most of all he is determined to pursue any activity that will set him on a course for greatness. His definition of greatness? Anything outside of their toxic home. Woodlands, underground bars, factories. He’ll see them all if it means being away from them.
Still, their family is just the three of them. He continues to bottle up his own emotions. His friendship circle is a mediocre attempt at being a social butterfly. He pushes most people away. But sometimes there’s occasionally a tree that won’t be felled by his turmoil. For those, he’s grateful.
