The 96th Annual Games — Muttation List
Returning mutts:
THE MONOMONO [59th]: (Melting Ice Sheet)
No one knows what this elusive muttation is supposed to look like besides the creator of the being. Rumor has it that it was created through a splicing of the DNA between a killer whale and a narwhal. Others say that it was a blue whale that had morphed into something elongated like a snake. And some old “historians” go even so far as to say that it resembles a certain sea monster that plagued the lake water of a place far away. All that is known is that it loves the cold waters and if anyone were to disturb its peace, it would not hesitate to retaliate. The mutation itself is quick and after taking a certain amount of damage, it will flee to take the time to heal.

BURNY RABBITS [69th]: (Witch’s Wood, Wintry Forest)
The Burny Rabbit is a Capitol creation originally used for fire and meat on the go, in the form of a cuddly companion, but got discontinued due to the danger of spontaneous combustion. That, and many Capitol soldiers didn't want to kill their pet rabbit... The rabbit was designed to be rather adorable, to appeal to the soldiers as a companion when things got lonely. It's the size of a normal wild rabbit, with a bit more meat on it. Its fur is fluffy and black, again for appeal, but also since it's meant for the winter, it's far easier to spot. This might also be a genetic side effect to being combustible. It has a patch on its head which you can strike flint on for the rabbit to catch fire and eat. It naturally gravitates towards humans as it's been designed to be a companion, but this causes more problems than it solves, because from scratching and moving, it catches fire. Other times, it just bursts into flames. This is why it had been implemented into the games. It kept bursting into flames in the arms of the capitol soldiers as they slept (or in broad daylight), causing severe 3rd degree burns. They have been re-designed to combust whenever it's near something emitting heat, for example, humans or other mutts. Once it is dead, it cannot combust.

EDIBLE (small game)
NESSES [71st]: (Melting Ice Sheet)
Small creatures, roughly two to three feet tall when full grown with a long neck, pointed muzzle, and four versatile flippers. Their skin resembles that of a dolphin, and can vary from grey to blue to green in color. They live only near water, and resemble very closely tales of the beast of Loch Ness. Very peaceful creatures, they often flock together in pods similar to orcas, and emerge at twilight and dusk to feed on eggs seabirds lay on the frozen shore. Clumsy and awkward on land, they can survive for hours at a time out of the water, similar to a dolphin or a beached whale. Originally, they were developed to add interest to massive fish tanks in the capitol, but they proved to be too large and far too difficult to maintain, as the creatures could eat twice their body weight and produce just as much waste.
ATTACKS USING BLUNT
INEDIBLE
HOLLOWS [77th]: (Cornucopia, Witch’s Wood)
These children are yet another Capitol mistake. They are modeled after a child who was killed long ago during an attack on the capitol, while wearing a gas mask. The Capitol medics tried to rescue the child with un-tested nanotechnology, but it could not save them. It turned them into a monster- or so the story goes. Truth be told, these ‘children’ are mere robots donned with a gas mask that were created to coerce and frighten rebels during the Dark Days, luring unsuspecting Rebels by crying and asking “Are you my mummy???”. It would not take long before they would begin attacking the rebels with whatever weapon they could lay their hands on. In this arena, though, some of the empty children look oddly...familiar... despite having gas masks for faces.

INEDIBLE
UNSAID [81st]: (Cornucopia, Fold, Mines, Witch’s Wood)
The Unsaid is said to be a manifestation of a person's secrets when they die; there are children's stories throughout Panem about them. Supposedly, when a person dies, their secrets form the Unsaid so that the person's soul can start fresh in the afterlife. To see an Unsaid, they say, is a grim prophecy that a person has a very big secret. Whether or not this is true, there are some qualities of the Unsaid that you cannot deny: their obvious similarities to their distant equine cousins, the black, leathery skin that seems to be stretched over little more than frail bone, the wings that can span up to fifteen feet on the biggest of them. Their hooves end at a sharp point, jagged as a broken branch and making each set of prints distinguishable from the next. Fables aside, these creatures could pull the secrets out of even the most unwilling host.
ATTACKS USING SPIKED BLUNT
INEDIBLE
GOLDBATS [83rd]: (Mines, Witch’s Wood)
These mutts were created by a certain gamemaker who has a taste for the finer things in life in mind. They're easily half the size of an adult human, with a wingspan so wide their arms and wings drag at their feet when they walk, which is not often. Their scales are armored- made completely of gold, making it considerably harder to kill them. Ultimately, the goldbats kill by draining their victims of blood. But their typical targets are small rodents, they only hunt at night, and they are actually quite afraid of humans, making them noticeably fickle when fighting against them.

INEDIBLE
GORAMONTS [86th]: (Mines, Wintry Forest)
Hulking masses of fur and ice, it is impossible to miss these huge creatures, and also nearly impossible to escape them. If not for the pair of icicles that jut out of its front end to resemble three feet long tusks, a person would have a difficult time distinguishing which end of the creature was which. They stand at roughly fifteen feet tall, large mounds of hair that is almost always covered in permafrost, and they are slow-moving until provoked, which causes them to charge their foes. They've been known to uproot entire trees, so one would do well to avoid standing in their path once they go into a rampage.

EDIBLE (big game)
Mutts unique to the 96th arena:
VOLKRA: Poisonous
These beasts with large, leathery wings and talons the size of any respectable blade shriek with almost humanlike terror. They prowl the skies, camouflaged by the night, as nomadic beats with truly only one goal: devour. Their razor sharp teeth are capable of reducing a creature to its bones by the time it's done, and it isn’t particular about its meal. If it has a pulse, it’ll do. If times are tough, they aren’t above killing off one another, the weakest or slowest of them. None of the test subjects survived to tell the tale, but research suggests that any who manage to survive an attack by one should seek immediate medical attention, as their saliva is also aggressively corrosive and can lead to sepsis if not treated. If you take damage from one of these creatures, it can be safely assumed that you've been given some sort of blood infection.

INEDIBLE
HAGS: Poisonous
The most ideal way of beating one would be to find it before it finds you. Sometimes, particularly at night, if you listen closely you’ll hear their mournful cries or their hysterical laughter. You’ll see them crouched into a ball at the base of an old tree, a widow’s wail. Something within you says you should help. But be warned: once she’s aware of you, a Hag will make it her personal goal to seek and destroy. Maybe it'll be direct and lunge toward you just as soon as you reveal yourself. Or maybe if it’s close to sunrise when you come across it, it’ll draw out its hunt for longer, hunched and cackling with the wind: you’ll turn and see its long, spindly fingers wrapping around the edge of a tree but by the time you make it over to investigate, there’s nothing there. You’re certain you feel its beady, knowing eyes on you from somewhere, but you aren’t sure where until it’s on you and by that point- well… It's usually too late. Tributes who are attacked by Hags will find that they see and hear things that are not there. Their heartrates will increase and be impossible to lower without cleansing themselves using antidote.
ATTACKS USING KNIFE
INEDIBLE
CRAWLERS: Poisonous
Like humans, they walk on two feet. But their limbs are long and stretched out: arms capable of climbing up walls and spindly frog-like legs which are capable of launching it ten feet in any direction. Its eyes are glazed over and milky white- you get the sense that they don’t see very well from the way its head twitches about, listening to the most minute sounds and vibrations to track its prey. It is completely hairless, with skin that is slick and damp to the touch. The only noises you can hear coming from it sound almost like clicking. Those attacked by this creature will find that their wounds fester as if infected and rotting.
ATTACKS USING KNIFE
INEDIBLE
HARENACE: (Throughout)
A hare and a menace combined. From a distance, the Harenace really does not live up to its name. The four-foot tall mutated hare, hops around on its hind feet and its equally disproportionate ears flop with every hop. A Harenace dresses to its climate, in the 96th arena, they can be seen wearing different coloured hooded fur unzipped jackets. For its cold heart needs to keep warm. Do not be enchanted by its cute appearance, this is a mutt to avoid if you want to keep your treasures! This kleptomaniac beast will grab everything it can before hopping off into its burrow. Haranaces travel in droves so don’t think that they will not ransack your belongings!
This mutt does not attack & is purely a nuisance for tributes. Random events may be triggered to encounter them.
EDIBLE if killed (small game)
96th Mutt Contest winner:
OVIS LUPUS: written by tick 12a / calla (Wintry Forest, Witch's Wood)
It's weird for sheep to howl. You can hear the wolf, but you can't see it through the flock. Made to protect animal herds, to blend in with passive animals and defend against predators. the Ovis Lupus appears as a cute group of cuddly sheep that will wander around looking for their shepherd, but when threatened their bones turn inside out and their wool molts off and their limbs twist and their teeth grow through their jaws. They're not howling, they're screaming. It's not that they're attacking you, their biology is simply protecting itself.
