Now tell me whatcha gonna do
When there ain't no where to run (tell me what)
(When judgment comes for you, when judgment comes for you)
And whatcha gonna do?
Marguerite didn’t bother to look back over her shoulder as the hunting lodge receded from view.
The bloodbath hadn’t gone exactly gone as planned.
‘Tits up’ might’ve been the best phrase for it, actually.
Azure was dead and gone, and Ines had looked like a deer in the headlights when it came to facing down the two careers that had practically stabbed Maggie to death. Marguerite had left her flank open and after getting sliced by Fray from one, the boy from four had run her through.
Blood trickled down her leg and along her back, and while it ached as she walked through the snow, she at least benefitted from the warmth coursing from each of her wounds. She tugged the parka closer to her body as she ambled along. She was careful to keep her gaze shifted downward.
She scanned over the footsteps and drops of blood before reaching down into the ice and wrenching free a pill bottle.
She turned over the orange plastic container in her hands and shoved it into her backpack.
Marguerite knelt to trace her fingers along the snow for anything else that might’ve been lurking underneath.
Footsteps crunched through the snow, and Maggie yanked the sword from her belt. She about faced and readied, eyes narrowed and lips pursed. Except all the bluster faded when she spied it was only to find Ines advancing. Maggie lowered her sword with a sigh.
“You good?” Maggie offered, as though anyone in their right minds, even the careers who’d trained for this, could feel good after witnessing that sort of chaos.
You can’t expect her to be anything other than shell shocked, Maggie reminded herself. She forced a smile as she furrowed her brow.
“Hey – ” Her voice was soft, just breaking above the wind and snow, “You were… you were great up there. Seriously. I don’t think anyone was expecting you to hang in there with me like that.”
