Lucky ran with Xylia's hand in his, navigating the Fold the best he could with half his senses failing. It was difficult enough with the thickness of the rolling fog and sudden beams of light from the electric storm above, but the piercing ring in his ears from the blast went on for the greater part of an hour. Every sound and noise pounded against his head, no more distinct from the last.
He watched old movies with explosions and bombs at home with the other New Horizons kids. Lucky thought manipulating the sounds was just for dramatic effect, but it was real. If Xylia spoke to him, it was too drowned out for him to respond. Lucky squeezed her hand just to make sure he did not lose her. The lightning bolts grew less and less frequent as they got deeper. It was safer, he hoped.
As they reached the lowest point of the Fold and the piercing pain in his ears became less consuming, his grip loosened and Lucky slowed down. The combination of shock and exhaustion over the day's events forced his hands to his knees to catch his breath. "Rita! It was the first words he could offer up to Xylia as the deep breaths overtook him. He could hear his own words in whispers, but the strain in his voice said otherwise. "She…"
The terror in her voice. The force in which she crashed against him and kept flying. Lucky leaned back in the corner of the pit, looking at Xylia to see what she had to say. Nothing, he bet. She was cold as the air they breathed when Gunner died. She went about ordering Lucky to get his head out of his ass when they both lost an ally and a friend. He wasn't sure if he could ever forgive her for that. He studied her face. Did she even care about Rita? Her own partner?
Lucky climbed to the pit's edge and sat, legs pressed up against his chest. "Why'd… why'd that happen?" The tears in his eyes welled again from the pure distress. He turned up to the clouded sky. "What'd I do to…" he paused himself as the clarity in his voice returned, the selfishness in his voice realized. "What'd she do to deserve that?"
Rumbling threatened in the distance. More thunderstorms? He took the last swig of water from his canteen, savoring the leftover taste of chocolate from the sweet cocoa once inside.
