The only real trouble with being a title holder is, of course, the problems it causes with the other girls. Usually people think I'm real nice, 'Sweet as sugar' Momma always said. I'd say I'm friends with most everyone I've met, tell you the truth, and have a real problem letting it go when I know there's someone who doesn't like me too much. But, Momma says that sometimes, that's just the way it goes: one minute my next door neighbor Leela has been my friend since we were little, and then the next, I'm being crowned Queen of the Autumn Oakley Fair of Face Pageant, and Leela is only getting 3rd runner-up, and she's suddenly too busy to hang out with me.

Don't get me wrong, I love competing. I'm good at it! I have just about one of the best dressmakers in the district thanks to Daddy's money, and the crowd always loves my jump rope routine in the talent portion, the talent portion haunts my dreams but I make due. I'm not the best in the world, but I've won more than I've lost. Also, I love how much time pageants lets me spend with Momma. I don't like when it puts me up against my friends, though.

Momma says that at end of the day, sometimes having a rival is all you need to take you to the top. I don't know. Maybe she's right. But I already told y'all: I don't handle it well when people don't like me. It burns me up inside, makes me so mad I could spit nails. I reckon I can't force anyone to like me, though. And I usually don't let myself fret about it for too long. But I can't lie and say the thought never crosses my mind that there's a world where no one hates me and that I'd rather live there instead of where I am.
